Hi all, I''m all ready to finalize my ering (have actually already started the process with WF) but am stuck on one last detail, and need your help to decide. I''m really having trouble deciding between yellow gold and platinum. I know this is a very personal preference, but here are my issues with the two, and maybe someone can give me some guidance??

Ring: custom 5 stone ring with 0.40 J ACA RB stones from WF (it was actually a slight modification of kcoursolle''s - kc if you''re reading this I hope that''s okay

). I just fell in love with the open U design of this ring the second I saw it! Mods are that the shank underneath will be narrowed slightly, and the end stones will be raised so they don''t cut into my fingers. (ps my finger is size 4.75)

Issues or facts to consider:

1. I love yellow gold more than platinum/wg, much to the chagrin of my bf, who loves plat and thinks yg is old-fashioned (blasphemy!). I have more yg jewelery and I think it looks better on my skin tone.

2. I have heard that lower coloured stones such as mine "pop" against yellow gold, but may show some warmth against platinum. Or is it the other way, and the stones would face up yellow from the yg?

3. I don''t like two-tone colour on a ring - so is it possible to do a ring (prongs and all) in yg? I have been told by some jewellers that no one does prongs in anything but plat, but i''m guessing this isn''t true. Maybe this is a question for WF.

4. How much will the prongs stand out against the diamonds if in yg? I love the look of uninterrupted sparkle across the finger.

5. IF I get a wedding band, it would be a "wafer thin" one in either yellow gold or rose gold, depending on the colour of ering i get. I had a link to the website but I can''t seem to find it, or remember the website name anymore. It would be about the size of a spacer though - VERY thin.

So that''s my dilemma. I''ve been going back and forth for days. Any comments would be greatly appreciated!!

hi! i would not do yellow gold prongs. just my humble opinion but i think the platinum is stronger and would not make the stones appear yellow. hopefully, someone who actually has yellow prongs will respond and have good information for you.

i would also do the whole thing platinum but that is just my personal preference. since your so is lobbying for platinum and you still have your heart set on yellow gold that is probably best for you.

I think you should get what you love

I'll suggest yellow gold with platinum prongs. That's what I have in my RHR and anniversary ring. Trust me, it will not look like a 2 tone ring. It looks like a yellow gold ring, but the diamonds will look "whiter" with the PT prongs (uninterrupted white sparkle).

Chrono, do you mean the prong tips in plat or the entire prong? There isn''t much to the ring from the top - really the prongs make up the entire head, so there would be quite a bit of plat if the entire prong was done and no gold would really show. It''s hard to explain, maybe this pic will show the ring better...

I'd ask WF about doing the yellow gold prongs if that what you really want. I know it's popular and recommended to do the plat. prongs but my mom has had her yellow gold wedding set for 25 years, wears it 24/7, including the pool and never had a problem. She gets her ring checked once a year to make sure nothing is loose. See what WF has to say and go with what they feel is best.

Mrs S, did ur mom ever notice her diamond taking on any colour from the yellow prongs? That is really the only thing that''s holding me back from the entirely yellow setting

I say go for yellow gold if that''s what you love! You are the one who has to wear the ring and if yellow gold looks best on you and matches the rest of your jewelry I don''t think it makes much sense for you to get anything but yellow gold!

I have two rings, my engagement ring and my grandmother''s anniversary ring, in 14k white gold with 14k white gold prongs. I''m just going to get the rings checked every year and I feel very comfortable with that. I doubt any reputable jeweler would even offer yellow or white gold prongs if they were just going to disintegrate!

Oops, I meant to add that with the way the ring is designed I don''t think it would look quite right with just platinum prongs.

Thanks everyone who has replied so far - your comments are invaluable

Thing2of2, I agree with you about the design not looking right with the prongs done in plat. Maybe i''ll ask WF to do a computer rendering with each yellow gold and plat settings, to see what it''ll look like. i forgot to mention I would do a satin yg finish, not the polished finish (not that that really makes a difference

) Maybe they can offer their opinion too - as to whether the J stones will look yellow. If they won''t look any more yellow then i''m going to go with the yg I think. Arg, such big decisions!

Yup, in mine, the entire prongs are in platinum. But yours, from the picture, has good sized diamonds, so it would be quite noticeable from the side. Hmm....I guess all YG would be the only way to go. I have a pair of diamond earrings set in 22kt yellow gold (inherited from my grandmother) which look really white to me, so I don't think the diamonds will be too affected by the metal colour.

However, the prong tips on my earrings are really small - much smaller than ANY of the prongs on all my other jewellery. They are so small that I had to bring them to the jeweller to get the okay before I dared to wear them on a daily basis. You'll need your prongs to be strong since these are for a ring. Ask WF (I assume you are going to choose them to do the ring) how small/noticeable the prongs will be.

oh man, I just had a mysteriously disappearing post... waaaah, it was good and long and in the end it said GET THE YELLOW GOLD lol

If you love YG go for it.
I would :}
The color difference with well cut stones isnt going to be enough to matter.

I wouldn''t worry about the prongs myself...

What I said in my long post is you can always have the yg ring plated with rhodium if you''re thinking you no longer like the yellow gold and if you prefer the white later on you can remake the ring... I know its a pita but you LOVE yellow gold so I''d bet on that rather than an expensive plat ring that you might regret.

honestly, no, I never noticed her stone taking on the color from the prongs. I always looked at her ring as a complete set, very 80''s yellow gold and diamond wrap type ring. It''s just so her and she doesn''t like any type of white metals so YG was the only option for her.
