I had Jerry Newman cut an Amethyst for me, it's a biggun at 16mm, round in that Amethyst Imperative faceting he uses. I want it set in a simple 6 prong setting, but I'd like to add some color to the bail or maybe some diamonds. I think Tsavorite melee on the bail would look nice and I know where to get gorgeous, very saturated Tsavorite, but I'm afraid they are too saturated for this particular Amethyst. Perhaps 10 or so bead set Tsavorite melee spread across the bail with 3-4 single cut diamonds randomly placed amongst them? I'm also struggling with how to lay out any melee on the bail and what kind of bail to go with although I'm leaning towards a slightly curved triangular bail. If anyone can offer up some advice and examples of what they think would work I'd be very grateful. Or even better, a Photoshop rendering, I'd do it myself but I'm not good with Photoshop. Thank you!

Love the colors in that amethyst, Greg. It's a nice cut. Should make a beautiful -- and biiig -- pendant!

It's a little hard to picture just what you mean, but below are some examples of jeweled bails that may get you thinking or help you explain. I think tsavorites would be great with an ammy, more fun than just diamonds.

Straight line of stones but you could alternate diamonds & tsavs or use a similar shape with melee.

This is a small photo & hard to see, but it looks like melee -- more what you meant?

Far crummier ammy than yours, probably not even real, but you get the idea of the bail.

You might use bigger stones as the bail & have the amethyst drop from them.

I have been coveting a huge ammy for a long, long time for a pendant so I envy you. Such a beautiful stone. No matter what you do that stone will shine. If I had that rock I would set it in a very intricate yellow gold setting sans any other gem. Let that ammy speak for itself. I am not a fan of colored stones accented with other color stones. Rather I opt for white diamond accents. I wish I had a picture as I am still looking for an example for my own use. I know the PS'ers will find it for you. Good luck.

JewelFreak, the ammy you posted above (oval ammy with tiny diamonds in the bale) you said was crummy and probably fake. How can you tell if an ammy is fake? I am looking for a large one and figured that ammys are mined nearly everywhere that manufacturing fakes are not worth it. I am not talking about fashion jewelry fakes (Claires, TJ Max, Macy's etc) but higher quality actually set in gold. I remember someone posted a while back that citrines an be heated to become purple. Please help.

Yes! That was what I meant. Would that be over the top with Tsavorites?

How about setting a single tapered baguette Tsavorite in the bale, and ask a gem cutter to cut one in size and colour that fits?

The inspiration came from this diamond pendant:

DK :))

This is a wonderful idea, and I know where to find the perfect stone. Brad at Gemtrader has had this Tsavorite for a long time and I have eyed it many times. But at nearly $1k it's more than I can afford for this pendant.

I just saw this in person. The basket was actually very intricate. I copied the cushion cut sparkler version of this last year for a 5ct amethyst.

BEAUTIFUL STONE!!!

I like that they fix the chain to the pendant at 2 points, should keep it from flipping, nothing worse than a pendant that insists on flipping all the time.

Greg, I don't think it would be over the top to use tsavs in a bail like the one on the amethyst I posted. It would be really neat & interesting. It would look good in rose gold too.

If you wanted to use just one stone, like the idea dk posted, if a tsav is too much, what about a green tourmaline? If it's not a chrome one, it shouldn't be too high a price for the size you need.

Lambskin -- I pulled that off a display of a zillion pendants from various sources. I think it's costume, judging from the site. Otherwise, I couldn't tell from a pic -- and by "not a real amethyst" I meant possibly glass in a gold plated setting. Sorry to confuse you! Brad Payne at The Gem Trader usually has very nice ammies -- and he's very nice & helpful. Try emailing him & ask what he has that isn't up on his site or ask him to find you one in the size you're looking for. I'm sure he'd be happy to do what he can.
