so my girlfriend decided she wants a steven kretchmer omega setting.
we are confused about the difference between the hard and soft omegas though
does anyone know the difference?
also due to the price of these rings i can only afford a nice quality diamond around .80-.90 carat, do you think this is too small of a stone
for that setting?
any help would be greatly appreciated
thanks again!

The Omega hard has distinct edges and a flatter looking top. The Omega soft is an all around domed design.

There are pics of both on the website, and it is fairly easy to see the difference in the "lines" of each.

As far as a .80 or .90 looking to small it just depends on her style. The center stone will not be as prominent. Go to a B&M store that has the setting (most of the ones I have seen have a 1ct cz set for display in the center), and have them hold a .80- .90 ct over the setting to get a feel of the width of the diamond, vs the width of the band.

missrocks, thanks for the advice!
im on there website looking at that right now and i can clearly see the difference.
but now im confused about what the difference between the "hard" and "soft" omegas are?
any advice on that?
sorry to be a pain

Its just an artistic style term. Ie. hard "edge" vs. "soft" edge. That''s all. Flat vs. rounded...
It doesn'' t mean anything about the metal being soft or hard..maybe thats what you were thinking? Hope that answers your question

Ummmm... just to confuse things - there''s an Omega flat and Omega round style in the ''soft'' category.

Style names are sometimes called OR for Omega round and OF for Omega flat. Just clarifying again, these are differences within the Omega ''soft'' category, not the Omega ''hard'' style.

Pearlman''s (pearlmansjewelers.com) and also Topper''s Jewelers (toppersjewelers.com) have good pics of them).

I think .80 to .90 will be perfect. The style also comes in ''wide'' (80% of width of the stone) and normal which is 62%.

If you have questions give Pearlman''s a call. They can explain everything (can you tell I seriously considered this style for myself?

and they have great pricing. Make sure you tell them you''re from PS)

angeline,
even though i am more confused, thank you for all the knowledge, i thought for a while i was going crazy b/c some websites had different styles of omegas on them and others just had one. but as im looking on the websites you suggested im still having trouble seeing the differences. maybe its just better to call and talk to them.
does anyone have any photos they could share to shed some light on this?
thanks again for your replys!

Mike,
I second just calling pearlmans and ask for Bill. He is just wonderful and will explain everything to you in a way you can understand. I''ve called him myself a few times and he was very patient in explaining to me what info I wanted. I honestly am not that familar with the kretchmer line to give you any advice.

thanks for everyone for their help, here is the answer directly from kretchmers studios...

A quick lesson in omegas.
We make an "Omega Round" or "OR" this ring is designed to be 62% of the
stones diameter. It has rounded or slightly bulged shoulders from a top
view. On our website.
The "Omega Flat" or "OF" is the same design but the shoulders are slightly
shallow or concave. In an image it is hard to see.

The "Wide Omega" or "WO" is a rounded omega 80% of stone.

The "Hard Omega" or "HO" is very squared and flat, as shown on our website
and is available in 62% or 80% of the stone diameters width.
The "Softened Hard Omega" or "SHO" is the same as above but the edges and
shoulders are rounded.
