White House’s Stephen Miller: ‘We are actively looking at’ suspending habeas corpus

"White House deputy chief of staff for policy Stephen Miller said Friday that the... administration is ‘actively looking at’ suspending habeas corpus, the right to challenge the legality of a person’s detention by the government. Miller’s comment came in response to a White House reporter who asked about ... entertaining the idea of suspending the writ of habeas corpus to deal with the problem of illegal immigration into the United States."

The wiki def in case you aren't a lawyer: Habeas corpus is a legal procedure by which a report can be made to a court alleging the unlawful detention or imprisonment of an individual, and requesting that the court order the individual's custodian to bring the prisoner to court, to determine whether their detention is lawful.

That's f-ing insane. Someone on twitter called it a soft launch into martial law.

I really don’t know how we are going to get through this.

Mayor of Newark arrested after protesting at the ICE detainment center. They love to see POC in cuffs.

A message is being sent. Loud and clear.
I have been listening to a podcast about the 1936 Olympics. It’s called “Revisionist history”
Hundreds of thousands of people protested US participation in the games. Jesse Owens was the star. But instead of proving the Arian race wasn’t the best, the games served to legitimize the Nazi regime.

In 1936, Los Angeles was as segregated as Mississippi.
Apparently the Nazis studied how the US justified segregation as a legal matter.
It’s all so chilling. Eerie…. looking at what’s going on right now.

It just keeps getting worse. And all the people who said it was NBD, I wonder what they think now? Like how far in the "First They Came" poem do we have to get before people decide it's enough?

Have you seen the video in MA of the teen running after her mom who was arrested, and they knock the girl down and arrest her, too? It's sickening. I keep having to remind myself that we're only a few months in to this. They are censoring, threatening, and arresting anyone who speaks out.

You know what's really frightening? Only a few in Congress are putting up a fight. Why? Why aren't they outraged, regardless of political affiliation? It's about being human, our basic rights, laws, the foundations of this country -- and treating people with respect and dignity.

Everyone should be outraged.

@Mreader, Please know you aren’t the only one wondering how we are going to get thru this.

Apparently we’re already at the end of the poem. Newark Mayor arrested???
Small news.
Alcatraz. Now that’s important!
Habeas Corpus? That’s really old thinking.
Who can stop this?
We did hold up groovy signs. That should have done the trick
I fear we’re just way too late.

I wrote a post late last night about what happened in NJ yesterday, deleting it due to wondering if I crossed a line. I was extremely upset after watching the news. Many Ice personnel had their faces covered up. If any of these people approached me on the street I would have been terrified. I felt sick watching the video. Between this and watching what they did to a 16 year old girl who was trying to be with her mom, I hate what is happening. Is this the new normal for American now? Are we supposed to accept cruelty?

Unfortunately, over 77 million people willingly chose it.

This is the saddest and most difficult thing for me because so many either didn't vote or voted for other parties. The popular vote victory was 1.5 percent one of the smallest ever, the candidate failed to secure the majority of the popular vote and had only a handful larger electoral college votes than his predecessor. Not a blowout victory by any means and it shows how important it is for everyone to vote.
