It might just be my anal retentive nature, but I wouldn''t do a round flanked by squares but I would do a square flanked by rounds.... well bitty princess stones around a irb might be fine but that''s another planet of diamond talk from this thread LOL

I am w/ you on this- but I haven''t seen much princess or asscher cut melee.

dtnyc, can you please share a link to your ering, and/or photos here? Thanks! I''m always curious to see another Transitional cut to see if that''s really what I have.

surfgirl-
I don''t have any great pics of my e-ring. Here is a link w/ a pro pic of my wedding band (an antique find, that happened to work splendidly well w/ my e-ring the way the band you "found" does) and the most decent pic of my e-ring I could find- pardon my lousy picture taking!

My transitional cut is a family stone that had been in a necklace that belonged to my husband''s paternal grandmother. He was given the opp. to use it in my e-ring and did- I didn''t know until he proposed with it. It''s cool because it''s a little different and it''s sizable, but I do have color issues (it was graded as an M). I had it appraised/evaluated by Ted Baer, who specializes in antique stones and it was interesting to learn about it''s age, he estimated that it was cut in the 20''s, etc. Also I have measurements, angles on it, etc.

I also will confess that I am not wildly happy w/ the quality of the setting- the craftsmanship is a lacking (again husband went w/ the old family jeweler, so the work wasn''t as precise as I would like. It''s a bit high & crooked for me- at some point we are going to have the setting lowered & I would like to either get double claw prongs, or the antique style flatter prongs (something to play up the uniqueness of the cut of the stone)- but that is a whole other Oprah!

PS- I love your e-ring and wedding band and loved reading about how you found both of them!

Chrono-
that setting was done by Quest right? It''s a replica of an antique Tiffany setting- am I recalling correctly?
I love your ring. I am hoping I can get my ring and husband to Quest before the end of the year to have my setting "re-done" by them. I have been very impressed by their work I have seen here and that ring is one of the reasons I really want to go see them!

Lovely ring Chrono! Is that middle photo an IS (the red one?) and did you take it yourself? I really want to get some of those toys so I can take some new looks at my own stone...sorry for the threadjack!

Yes, Quest made the setting based on a real antique Tiffany setting that another Pricescoper purchased (and has long since left). It was the same down to the prongs (as commissioned by MsS) but I changed it into a bezel to protect the thin girdle of the stone. MsS''s OEC (which is now long gone) had numerous girdle nicks that downgraded the clarity of her stone by 2 grades and this worried me about my own stone, so I thought a bezel would be safest. Pete is very prompt and they do really good work.

Yes, the center pic in red is the IScope picture. I want my stone to not only be an old cut but have at least good to very good light return. Not asking for a lot, huh?

Whiteflash took the picture for me during the diamond examination process.

Chrono, you bring up an important point regarding old cuts - the prevalent thin/ex thin girdle issue. Mind you, I wouldn''t trade my stone for one with a studier girdle but...Would you tell me more about the setting experience in terms of the girdle? Did Quest have any issues with that aspect of the stone? Was it chipped at all while setting? Would you ever consider having the girdle re-cut? I ask because I think about this and wonder if it''s better to be pre-emptive and re set my ring sooner rather than later so the girdle can be better protected (though I love the look of my exposed stone in its current setting). Then again, someone here recently had her OEC''s thin girdle re cut and she says there was no after affect at all. I think i''d be afraid there would be an after affect and I dont know that I could do that but...wanted to know if you had any issues with your re setting and if you''d considered re cutting the girdle...Thanks for your thoughts!

surfgirl-
I am not chrono- but I have an OEC that I had re-set in a bezel because I was concerned about the thinness of the girdle- one of the reasons I did this is because my transitional cut in my e-ring (which was graded VS2) does have a small shallow chip underneath the girdle as well as a natural along the girdle as well. I don''t know what the chip is from (I found it on my own while examining my ring like a psycho and I was afraid I had done it, but Ted Baer said it had probably been there a while, but we don''t know if it was from setting, wear and tear, etc.)

When I eventually get my setting re-done, I am going to ask the jeweler/setter, what would be best for the stone. I don''t want to bezel it or even do 6 prongs- but maybe putting double claws on it would be a bad idea and maybe I would be better off doing the wider flatter antique style prongs.

I don''t have the papers handy but I believe I have a med-very thin girdle on my transitional cut.

dtync,
The original setting DID have the flatter wider antique style prongs at 12-3-6-9 but MrsS''s OEC still had several nicks on the girdle.

Surfgirl,
Quest had no issues with my OEC''s thin girdle. They also had no issues with MrsS''s OEC''s thin girdle. Mine did not chip during the setting and I would not recut the girdle. Hence, I am doing the bezel route with gentle wear practices. My stone has been repolished before though. I haven''t given much though about recutting the girdle. Technically, just to beef up the girdle, I think there would be minimal weight loss and little effect on the look. Still, I''d be worried to death if I had to put my OEC "under the knife", so to speak.
