Well congrats on the cads but seriously going to kay's for a temp ring and then returning it. I feel that is really a crappy thing to do. :nono:

If you are looking for something else how about a fun eternity band with gemstones or a half diamond eternity that she can wear as a RHR instead. Even just a plain wedding band would be fine. You can go online at eweddingbands.com for some very inexpensive options.

CAD's are quite nice.

Seriously, the Kay thing is not nice. What if she loves the Kay ring? Return policy? nightmare! What if she loses the diamond in the Kay ring in the days between? Karma can come back to bite you....

Congrats & the CADs look good!

+1 on the above quote...
I know you are not asking for this advice...but even a fun light up ring would do for a stand in!
I agree a temp ring from Kay's is just not a great option for many reasons.

zuwood,

Don't know what your timeframe is, but if you have time, there are lovely vintage erings (sometimes even wedding sets) available on ebay for $300 or less, which your sweetie could use as a travel/knockaround ering. Or you may be able to find something pretty at a pawn shop. If you have a little time and you want some help finding something, post your girlfriend's ring size and we can help you find something.

I definitely wouldn't do the Kay thing.

I used to work in retail sales on commission for a while and know it sucks to have returns but its a part of being in the field, their expected. I'm sure she wont love a .25 plain solitaire when she has a 1.22 coming with side stones.

You guys need to relax, the 15 dollar commission from a ~500 purchase wont make the person cry. Scratch the Kay comment is there a way to remove it, i dont have the edit button available anymore.

Maybe, but she might want to be able to keep they actual ring you proposed with. I know I would, even if it were a simple silver band. It's sentimental. I'd rather be proposed to with something I can keep for the memory than have to return it. Even if the real ring is so much better.

Well, okay... I have a 2+ carat oval but I also have a 1/3 ct. in a beautiful vintage platinum setting and I'm getting a rose gold ring made with a .8 ct. old mine cut.

I'm not suggesting a plain solitaire, I'm suggesting something from the 1900s to 1940s, inexpensive but with pretty metal work, which she can wear when she doesn't want to take a chance on damaging her good ring. Or maybe a vintage engraved wedding ring or other stacker-type ring or something she can wear on her right hand, as others have suggested.

What if she falls in love with the Kay ring?

zuwood,

You're assuming the objections are because of the commission. For me, it's not. It's the principle of the thing. You know you're not going to keep the substitute ring, but the business you buy it from is going to take the hit on it when you return it and your gf will have worn it, even if only for a few days. It's like buying a new TV before the Super Bowl so you can watch the game and then returning it after the game, not because you don't like the TV, but because you didn't intend to keep it in the first place.

If you don't want to spend money on a substitute, get a ring pop or something really cheap from Target or Wal-Mart or the dollar store.

Well I apologize. When you write in all caps online it comes across as yelling and sarcastic so it threw me off.

I'm very happy you will actually do a more fun temp ring. I think that is the best idea! :appl:

I didnt want 20 more ppl to chime in and saying its a bad idea.

Jax was the one who mentioned that your gf might want to keep the ring. I can't take credit for that.

Seriously, have a good time finding something fun as a proposal ring. If there had been a proposal for me, I guarantee my fiancé would have proposed with an o-ring. He's a mechanic. He has kazillions of o-rings of all shapes and sizes in his shop.

You may find an over-the-top costume ring or something that's a funny character or theme that she likes, or a ring that's not jewelry, something that will make a very fun proposal story to tell family and friends. You know her and you know your private jokes so ham it up, make it special and personal, not just the first substitute you can get your paws on because the real thing won't be ready in time.

Easter proposal? Maybe get one of those eggs with a scene in it and stash a ring of some sort in the scene (or if you are really creative, make your own with a real eggshell). Think out of the box.

Ive pretty much got it figure out buy a cheap ring from somewhere wal mart or claires, its a bday proposal, Apr 6. I requested photos of the waxes and castings from WF. With those Im going to make or order a book titled "How you ring came to be" or something like that. Put pictures of the CAD process then the wax and casting photos, if the rings arent done by then leave the last pages empty she can add them later or simply put like a mailbox saying they were on the way. Ill prolly a attach a string with a small disclaimer stating the ring was fake and that she had a real on coming soon. So when the ring comes out the ring box the disclaimer will come also.

not qquite in stone yet but will be very close to this

That sounds like fun. You know the drill around here. Hand shots! (Maybe get a special ring box.)
