Just a quick price check to make sure this diamond is good!

Re: Just a quick price check to make sure this diamond is go

+ 1 to the above cheat sheet

I know you have a special proposal planned out & that date is fast approaching. But I really think this jeweler is not doing you any favors. The good folks here are great at what they do, and I wish you could use their expertise.
What about this? Purchase a simple gold/ or not so simple;) band ring from this jeweler and propose with that. Tell her because she is so special, you want only the best for her and the search is taking longer than expected. Then when you get home come back here and let PS help pick a stunner.
I have seen diamonds in the size you are looking at with EX cut that out sparkle larger poorer cut diamonds, so please look at EX cut stones!

Re: Just a quick price check to make sure this diamond is go

Can you get a 'loaner' ring??? something that you can do the beautiful proposal and say to your fiancee that you wanted HER input on the ring, so you have this 'substitute' till you both input into the gorgeous engagement ring? I say this because buying in haste is repent in leisure and I've bought several pieces when I was 'diamond greedy' my term about ME and in no way implying anyone else get's this, but I have a tendency to buy first 'cause my husband will buy it and I want now... I've made a few mistakes.. such is life.. but I can see the difference in ideal/awesome/XXXXX etc cut stones vs a good cut..I'd rather truly have something that shoots light than a stone I have to clean 3x a day to meet my sparkly threshold (and I do know this).. sorry this is so long but I KNOW you want this to be perfect for your loved girlfriend!

This too! We see it ooh shiny!! But in the cold light of day we could have so much better. Now that you know what you know, a less than stellar diamond may be regretted later on.

I applaud you for making a special engagement moment and trying so hard to get a beautiful ring!!!
Good luck

Re: Just a quick price check to make sure this diamond is go

I really feel my insides twisting when I read your guys comments, because of what I have to say in this response!

Unfortunately there truly is no time left, as I have to get the ring by January 10th, as this ring is coming from CustomMade and I've worked with this maker to create what is honestly a bit of a work of art of a ring (she's really great!). She says she has made sure not to mark up any of these diamonds at all, and she says that with the options I was telling her about, any of the ideal cuts will simply have to be $2500+, and that is just as simply not in my budget.

However, she insists these are all excellent cuts, but don't get me wrong - if we had the time, I would absolutely send her those diamond measurements again (yes, I did so before from the first person that gave me that tip of parameters :) ). I obviously would LOVE to get the lady a perfect diamond, but with the cruise that we'll be going on on the 12th (our first ever) and the custom made job, there simply isn't the time or the money to choose from anything but the options she's given me - that she had to make clear to me, despite how she is sorry as well that we are in a time crunch. There really wasn't a choice when making the decision for a cruise either. (All of this would be why, as you can understand, I can't get a loaner ring!)

So here is the latest image for the third diamind (which ends up being the wrong one again...she says she'll have her guy send it Monday morning but then I would only have a scant few hours to review it): http://www.cmstatic1.com/01-14/2692504/c84c2494577630c.png

I somewhat doubt that the .44ct diamond will be wildly different than these other ones, but you guys have steered me away from what would have been a bad choice before, so I am as ever, really appreciative of you all.

So yeah...terrible, depressing news, especially for a crowd such as this - the wiggle room is now gone, and she has said that with our timeline and budget, this seriously is it. These three (to be made into 4 choices Monday morning) choices.

Since this really is the last leg, all I have left to ask is that if anyone wants to chime in about these three choices, let me know. Despite how you guys say to definitely lean away from the 0.48 ct one, I am still uncertain as to why.

krisjon was saying how it is a 3.1 HCA...I take it he did that on this page https://www.pricescope.com/tools/hca . But I also heard that HCA is not the end-all to diamond decisions, and I always have enjoyed the idea of leaning towards a larger stone for her, so I'd be happy with the 0.48 because of that. But then again, I know you guys are right - cut is king, and really it's best to get something as perfect as can be.

So let me know what you guys think of this latest diamond, and if at all possible I'll decide on Monday morning when I see the 4th diamond (0.44ct is, after all, larger than this 0.40ct mistake!).

PS-Seriously, thanks again, and I hope those of you that have told me to hold off now sufficiently understand the situation.

Re: Just a quick price check to make sure this diamond is go

That stone is another 3.1 HCA
So far, #2 (.43, F, VS1) is still the frontrunner at 2.0 HCA.
I wish we didn't have to rely on such little info, but the HCA helps cut down error when picking.

Also, never sacrifice cut quality for a slightly bigger carat weight.
If the cut is bad, but the stone is bigger, you just have a bigger dead stone. You don't want that!
Get it out of your head that bigger is better. With diamonds, that's not the case.

Re: Just a quick price check to make sure this diamond is go

You got it :) Frontrunner is then the 0.43ct diamond, and I'm now great with that! Thanks!

Re: Just a quick price check to make sure this diamond is go

In case she still sends me the last cert, would you guys happen to be able to tell me how you translated the cert sheets I gave into that HCA judging website to get those HCA numbers? (This page, right? https://www.pricescope.com/tools/hca ) I'm just not sure if there will be any time left when and if she sends it to me today.

I just can't quite exactly see the correlation between those HCA numbers on the certs and what it says to go by on the site; not sure if I'm being dumb or am just wildly inexperienced.

EDIT: Sorry, double post.

Last one! What is it HCA wise? Thoughts? (have about 1 hr! I think!

This is an extremely steep and deep cut. A 4.5 HCA. Worst performer of the 3 and not even a consideration.
As far as the HCA goes, all I'm doing is plugging in depth, table, crown and pavillion numbers. They're listed right there on the GIA report.

Your #2 stone is a Very Good, but not Excellent/Ideal cut (which is preferable). However, based on the 3 stones you have to choose from, it's going to have the best predictable light performance based on its proportions at 2.0 HCA. Seeing it with your own eyes will help, too, but it's the best of what you have to choose from. But again, we're not going off the kind of information you want to have/need to make a really educated decision (ASET, IdealScope, etc).

Re: Just a quick price check to make sure this diamond is go

That's the best we got then. Excellent - thank you SO much krisjon. You may have just helped choose the diamond that my lady will wear around her finger for the rest of her life. So yeah...can't quite thank you enough!! :)

EDIT: And I am well aware that it is a tragedy that more information could not be taken into consideration for all of this, or more time could have been taken - but given the circumstances I'm glad that we got a diamond that we will still absolutely be happy with for the rest of our lives. Truly, thank you all.

Re: Just a quick price check to make sure this diamond is go

Happy to help and congratulations! I just got engaged myself, so it's an exciting time.
Please let us know how it turns out and post pics of the ring when you get it.

Re: Just a quick price check to make sure this diamond is go

Just a follow-up.

Here's the HCA for the stone you picked:

netsurfer_.jpg

You can see how close it actually is to AGS Ideal Cut standards (the white box) for a GIA Very Good. It's right on the edge. Not bad for such a limited choice.

Re: Just a quick price check to make sure this diamond is go

I just wanted to say that you have no idea how glad I was when you said this, and sure enough, my custom maker told me that this diamond is easily one of the greatest she has ever seen.

You made the difference, krisjon. Truly - thank you. I may well be able to upload photos in a week or two when we're back from the trip :)

Pictures requested! Guys, we LOVE it! The diamond is incredible!! Truly, we lucked out a lot, but I absolutely could not have done it without you guys.

Seriously. It is appreciated more than I can express - for obvious reasons!

Re: Just a quick price check to make sure this diamond is go

Don't thank me, thank Garry Holloway and his HCA. We didn't have a lot to go on and were limited in choices, but it helped pick the best of the bunch!

Congratulations! Super happy for you guys and glad you love the ring.
