Today, June 15, 2015, is the 800th anniversary of magna carta, or as we Americans call it, The Magna Carta. There have been many articles written about this anniversary in the past weeks. I have seen some in, "The Wall Street Journal"; "The New Yorker"; and, "The New York Times", but these articles also have quoted other articles published in the UK. I can only imagine how much ink has been used on the subject.

Most people regard The Magna Carta as the first document upon which American and British law is based. (Of course some of the articles written about it say that this theory is false. What would an occasion like this be without some good, scholarly debate?)

I have been enjoying these articles. If anyone else would like to use some of these links or post some more, please use this thread to do so. I welcome any discussion of the Magna Carta here, too. I'm not sure it will interest anyone from Pricescope, but some people have been discussing it on the Internet.

Since no one else seems terribly interested in this topic, I thought I might as well amuse myself with this thread. I found this video on YouTube and enjoyed it. Everyone else is welcome to try it out. ;))

I really should post a link but I am sneaking a break ;)) Search for a BBC podcast called "Things we forgot to remember" and listen to their episode on the magna carta.

Beatriz-

Thank you so much for this! It is wonderful! The person doing the podcast quotes both 1066 and All That (one of my favorite books) and also A.A. Milne! Could there be a better pairing? This is a very erudite edition to the current discussion; I enjoyed it.

I don't have anything of substance to add. I was aware of the Magna Carta's existence and the basics of how it has influenced the idea and some of the Bill of Rights of America. I was unaware that King John put the royal seal on it and then the Pope annulled it shortly thereafter. I also didn't know, and found it amusing, that King John was such a terrible king that no royal wanted another King John.

I just wanted to say thanks for posting the links. DH, who has his BS in History, was very impressed when I casually mentioned the Magna Carter's anniversary to him. I also read the articles that you provided links for and will listen to the pod cast. It was a nice change of pace to read something other than the riveting tales of Car Goes Far, Bubble Guppies' First Look and Find, and Amazing Airplanes :-) It is also a reminder that I used to read the Economist, the New Yorker and the WSJ frequently, it is probably time to get back to some real reading material again.

I am lucky to live within a short drive to Salisbury and was able to visit the special exhibition where the best-preserved remaining copy was on display.

DK :))
