I have always loved the HP books, not so much the movies. However I'm really excitied for this annoucment that there will be something more coming down the pipeline + Rowling will be the screenwriter so perhaps there will be more details and a better flow. So excitied!!!! :appl: :appl: :appl: I feel like I"m back in middle or high school standing in line at the midnight release waiting to get my new copy of the book all over again! :appl:

"This week, Warner Bros. announced plans to make a series of films based on Rowling’s 2001 Hogwarts textbook, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which as the author explained on her website, isn’t a Harry Potter sequel but “an extension” of the world that he inhabited. Instead of hiring someone to adapt the book to film, Warner Bros. has hired Rowling to do so.

“As I considered Warners’ proposal, an idea took shape that I couldn’t dislodge. That is how I ended up pitching my own idea for a film to Warner Bros.,” Rowling said on her website. The movies will take place 70 years before Harry Potter’s time and will focus on Newt Scamander, the fictional author of the Fantastic Bests textbook. It’s unclear whether Rowling will write each screenplay in the series, but if the first one goes well, the studio is unlikely to abandon its celebrity screenwriter."

I'm with you SB. I know the movie cannot be as detailed as the book since some things are difficult to show onscreen but I've always felt that the departure in feel is too great from the books. The emphasis is on different things and even the character representation is changed.

AND they just announced that the new extension of HP World (as I call it) in Orlando will be opening next spring, presumably around May. What will be there?

King’s Cross Station and the Hogwarts Express – CONFIRMED
Gringotts Bank attraction – CONFIRMED
Diagon Alley – CONFIRMED
Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes – CONFIRMED
The Leaky Cauldron – CONFIRMED
Ollivander’s Wand Shop (a larger version)
Madam Milkin’s Robes for All Occasions
Wiseacre’s Wizarding Equipment
Florean Fortescue’s Ice Cream Parlour
Knockturn Alley
Borgin and Burkes store of Dark magic

The non-confirmed ones are speculation only. I just love the idea that it's being built in the OTHER Universal park, and then you take the Hogwarts Express train to the Hogwarts/Hogsmeade area! :appl:

It was a great day for Harry Potter lovers! (and no wonder JK Rowling was 'trending' on FB today, lol)

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP I'm SO EXCITED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am thrilled!!! I love HP and I'm excited to have new stuff to look forward to!! I am sure it's going to awesome.

Confession- I live in FL and I've never been to HP World. I keep saying I'm going to go when it gets cooler outside, but I swear it's been 90 degrees here for the past 3 winters and it's just never happened. I am a bad fan!

Did any of you read her adult fiction book?

I am right there with you, SB. I enjoyed the movies for what they were, but I did think that they were too far of a departure from the books. I am excited so see how it goes with her being the screenwriter!!!!

SB, I was wondering if you would start this thread, considering your signature! :D

I, too, am a huge fan of the HP books (I just began re-reading the series...again...and Harry and Ron are about to go talk to Moaning Myrtle about how she died...) and have both the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and the soundstage in London on my bucket list!

I'm excited to see a new portion of the wizard world, and I'm looking forward to seeing more of the unique creatures that JKR can imagine up! I mean, Fantastic Beasts must be...fantastic!

liaerfbv, I did. I gave it about 3.5 stars, out of 5. Once again she created an incredibly intricate world of deep and interesting characters, but I also felt that sometimes she was reaching a little bit to break out of the "Harry Potter" mold, and that decreased my ability to enjoy the book.

It's sitting on my kitchen counter, along with about 8 other books, patiently waiting for me to finish this semester of uni. I can't wait for my 3 month summer break -- SO much reading to do!

I read A Casual Vacancy....

A fairly realistic, layered portrait of a small town in crisis. In the fallout of parish councillor Barry Fairbrother's death, the stories of a diverse cast of unhappy people are woven together: some likeable, most not. The upcoming election for Barry's empty council seat fuels a sea of pettiness, gossip, and self-interest, and long-simmering resentments come to a head.

A world inhabited by Muggles only. In addition to the conspicuous dearth of wizards, it lacks the kooky charm, sentimentality, and optimism of Harry Potter. As an adult novel that tackles sobering subjects like drug addiction, child abuse, and rape, it's bound to be a bit denser. Yes, there is profanity. Yes, there is violence. Yes, there is sexuality. But it is never excessive or graphic or gimmicky. I got the sense that Rowling just wanted a no-holds-barred look at life in Pagford from all angles. Omitting swear words or the more disturbing events would have seemed far less raw and honest.

Multiple perspectives can be hard to pull off (jarring, choppy, etc), but the transitions are executed smoothly. The realistic, distinctive internal dialogue is the strong point of the novel, creating fully-realized and 3D characters you come to know very well. Some you wish you didn't - the small-minded and pernicious Mollison clan remind me of the Dursleys + Umbridge, and it was hard to read through their prejudiced and self-satisfied small talk. But there are also some fundamentally well-intentioned but flawed folks that I enjoyed following around and seeking to understand (Andrew, Parminder, Fats, etc). All the characters feel, as Fats would say, authentic.

The novel is slow-paced (and drags sometimes), but it carries a sort of slow burn. You detect certain tensions building and building and wonder what the culmination of those tensions will mean. Every action has consequences that echo through the rest of the book.

Ultimately, it's a fairly dark novel, but all the same, I felt reluctant to let the characters go at the end. Which is always a good sign.

I'm sorry to say that I have own it but haven't read it yet. I know from reading other reviews it is a fairly dark novel meaning- I like to be in a good mind set and want to read that type of book before I get started. I'll go for months where I'm on a murder/ mystery kick or high fantasy or memories- and that will be all I read till I feel like moving on to something new. Lately I have been reading various retellings of classic fairytales which has been an odd departure for me.

Yes I do love JKR and HP! I credit JKR to really turning my generation back to reading books vs watching tv and playing video games. I remember before the series came out I hated to read and fought tooth and nail to just watch the tv movie instead. Then what HP came out and all the sudden you can't wait to read. At camp when the newest HP book came out they would give us that night and the next morning off from activies to those who wanted so we could all sit around and read. It fostered conversation which led us to talking about other books and then reading those other books! I think I stepped into my first library right around that time too, now I didn't even need to spend money on books but could borrow them. Mind blown as a 12 year old let me tell you!

But yes I'm very excited. I do want to see what is coming next and I think so many ppl want just a bit more of this world she created. We went to The Wizarding World of HP last year and loved it! Now we will definitely have to go back since they are expanding it! I just can't wait!

I also have it and just haven't read it yet. I'm a voracious reader and own more books than I'll probably ever get to, but currently I'm invested in the 1916 series, which is historical fiction about the Irish rebellion and is just totally owning my life. I keep saying JKR is next, but I've been saying that for quite a while now.... so we'll see.
