Hi, it depends what you mean by evaluation and for what purpose.
Only an accredited gemologist can do a gemstone identification report, you need a registered valuer and appraiser if you want a formal valuation for probate etc but if you just want a jewellers “opinion” on a gem or piece of jeweller you need to make sure that the person you are seeing / speaking to actually has appropriate knowledge for their advice to be accurate.
A jeweller can just be the shop owner, or be a manufacturing jeweller (ie make jewellery in his workshop) or be a qualified gemologist and/ or be a registered valuer and appraiser as well.
Hi again, I checked the Gemological Association for Victoria (I’m in NSW) and there’s a number of qualified gemologists and registered valuer listed. One I saw was Abrecht Jewellers 227 Collins St, Melbourne. Leon Abrecht is a qualified gemologist and registered valuer so he could give you a valuation for insurance purposes.
With insurance, just carefully check your policy to understand exactly what type of loss is covered and how they will pay you. Sometimes it’s cash to the sum insured, other times they may insist you go to one of their nominated jewellers to get “similiar”. And jewellery insured under home contents insurance isn’t the same as “anywhere / anytime cover” so make sure you get the right type for your needs.
