Hi,

After one month of browsing different Internet vendors and after reading a lot of posts in this fantastic forum I've finally found a stone I like. I had decided to buy a stone between 0.59 - 0,62 carats colour G and VS2. I know that many of you guys thinks eye-clean SI1 is the way to go but I want VS2 :-)

Well, the specs of the stone is listed below. What do you think of it? Will the medium fluorescene destroy the overall impression? Thanks for your help!

Certificate: GIA
Shape: Round
Cut: Excellent
Carat: 0.59
Color: G
Clarity: VS2
Measurements: 5.38-5.32-3.35
Depth Percentage: 62.6 %
Table Percentage: 54 %
Girdle: Medium to Slightly Thick
Culet: None (Pointed)
Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Excellent
Fluorescence: Medium Blue
Clarity charasteristics: Crystal
Crown angle°: 34.0
Pavilion angle°: 40,8
Pavilion Depth %: 43.0
Price: $1800

Have you seen it?

Flour: it''s medium, not moderate on GIA reports, and the color should be listed.

For completeness, what is the pavilion angle?

Hi Julien,

I havn't seen the stone. Is there a risk it can look cloudy or oily vid medium blue fluorescene?

I've edited my first post to contain tha data you asked for, I've also added the clarity charasteristics.

Thanks for your input!

No on the flouresence.

It seems a little deep for the proportions; maybe the girdle tends toward slightly thick rather than medium, or rounding, or the smaller table is throwing me off, or any combination of those.

You're at a combination where for just a little bit more, you can get the creme de la creme (H&A, excellent+ finish)
$1910 http://www.whiteflash.com/hearts_arrows/a-cut-above-h-a-cut-diamond-19696.htm (less weight but bigger)

Or you can find others for a slightly better price.

Thanks foe your input once again. That diamond you linked to, looks nice :-)
I always wanted a 0.60 - 0.65 carat, So looking at a 0.59 was already a big step for me. Looking at a 0.583 is an even bigger step :-)

If it wasn''t for the damn taxes I have to pay buying a diamond from USA

It''s like adding 30% to the cost...

So, watch the catch with this diamond?

To big table?

Measurements: 5.71 - 5.74 x 3.45 mm
Carat Weight: 0.68
Color Grade: G
Clarity Grade: VS2
Cut Grade: Excellent
Proportions:
Depth: 60.3 %
Table: 58 %
Crown Angle: 33.5°
Crown Height: 13.5 %
Pavilion Angle: 41°
Pavilion Depth: 43.5 %
Star length: 55 %
Lower Half: 75 %
Girdle: Thin to Medium, Faceted
Culet: None
Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Very Good
Fluorescence: None
Price: 2150$

Price and numbers look fine to me.

That's what I'm saying; you're at a place where, by playing with your budget a few hundred dollars this way or that way, you can gain quite a lot in cut, carat weight, color, or clarity.

I just got a stone like you are describing. It is .65, G, med flo. Great, great stone. The flo doesn''t do anything negative, it is bright and lively. You can see pictures in the "show me the ring" section under the topic "just arrived". The specs are there and it is somewhat similar to yours.

okay I get you on the cost-= but really, going from .583 to .59 is literally .007 of a carat and since you''d be going UP in face up width... I don''t see how that could be an issue.

Cehra is right. You must think of the mm size face up not the weight. The mm size is what you will see!!!

So a stone that weighs less may actually look larger!!!!!!!!

Hello again,

Thanks for all of your help. I''ll continue searching for the perfect diamond! I''ve also learned that I was looking at the wrong setting for my fiancé to come. I was sure she wanted a tiffany-like, thin solitare-setting. But now i belive a more thick solitare-setting is the way to go. Any ideas?

Maybe something like this:

#1
#2
#3
#4

There''s a lot of variations out there. Adorned or not adorned? Cathedral or not?

the x prong

Thanks for your ideas. This will be hard, I can''t set my mind on finding another setting. I was fully focused on the thin solitare setting, and that it was perfect...

If I still where to buy the thin solitare one, don''t you think she''ll like it once she get''s it on her finger

I didn''t see where you said in this thread, but, do you know what SHE would like? What are the sizes of the bands on rings she wears now?

Hi Ellen,

actually I don''t know what she would like. We sort of went past a jewelry store, and she stopped and looked at some ring (i didn''t see which) and I pointed at a tiffany-like setting and said:
"Oh, thats a nice ring."

She said something like:

"Well, it''s kinda thin. And it looks to much like your sisters e-ring." (I.e she thought it would be wierd having "the same" ring as my sister)

I''m not pleased with myself that I missed to notice the ring whe thought was nice. I really don''t have a clue what I should search for. But hey, thats the way it is...

I''ll probably end up with the classic 6-prong setting anyway

OK, even though you missed it, there''s still hope! Speaking from a womans point of view, an engagement ring is a very personal, and expressive thing. Now, you got two important pieces of info from her. Sounds like she doesn''t want a real thin band, and she doesn''t want anything that looks like her SIL''s, which I can understand.

There''s a couple things you can do. One would be to talk to her mom, if you''re comfortable doing that, no one will know her tastes better, and I would think she could keep the secret. If she has a girlfriend you can totally trust, you could also ask her, as girls tend to discuss these things.

Or, you could put the stone in a very inexpensive setting, propose, and then you and she go together to pick out what she wants. That way, you get to surprise her, and she gets what she wants. It''s a win/win situation. And we''ve seen many couples do this.

Thanks for your suggestions! I really want to buy the correct setting from start eventhought the proposal of buying a cheap one just to change it was smart! Well I'll just have to continue searching!

Here goes another diamond, what do you all think about it? Any ideas why it's only graded as very good, table? Everything except polish seems to be 1A...

Clarity Grade: VS2
Cut Grade: Very Good

j, honestly, the diamond julie linked for you is perfect, they just about don''t get any better. The company is great to work with, and they have a great upgrade policy. The difference in diameter between that one and this new one is really nil. I would seriously consider the WF stone.

Hi Ellen,

Thanks. I'm aware of the quality in that stone I got recommendet at WF. The problem is that I'm in a moment 22

Eventhough thats changing at the moment...

As i wrote earlier in this thread I've always thought of buying the tiffanysetting, Ive found the perfect one at a special vendor and I want to buy the stone at the same vendor. So, now at first, I'll be looking at the inventory at this special venodor...

I'd love to hear your thoughts on this one...

This is my last day I''ve got this diamond on hold (the one in the post above), is there anyone that want''s to share their thought on that stone? I really would appriciate that!

Best regards

jhn

It''s 1489 at Mondera (no taxes yet)

Thanks Julien,
The thing is, with setting, duties, VAT, shipping and insurance it''ll still be cheaper at the current vendor. But I appriciate your answer :-)

Any other thoughts regarding color, fluorescene, cut etc? In the pricescope cut adviser I''ve been getting scores like 0,9, 1,1 and 1,7 depending on wich data for the diamond i entered...

It is somewhere between .9 and 1.2. Very safe numbers.

You should ask for a picture.

I''ve asked for a picture, but unfortunatly my earlier contacts with different vendors say''s that thay won''t have any pictures :-(

What would I look for in a picture, beside to see wether it''s eye-clean?

Thanks again...

A magnified picture would show you if it has hearts and arrows symmetry. But the numbers look nice, so I think this one is worth a look!

Hi again,

I haven't ssen any magnified pictures of the stone but i bought it anyway :-) I'll have it in my hand sometime next week. But I'd still love so get some input regarding this. I had little or nothing to do at work so I googled the GIA report number and I got two hits at Mondera.

First link - Nothing strange here. Everything is jolly fine :-)
http://www.mondera.com/diamonds/product.asp?mscssid=classid%3D111&partno=495967

Second link - This is also at Mondera, same diamond. Here they say that the diamond is a Hearts & Arrows stone (up to the left). Its actually the page you reach if you click "Print this page" from the first page...
http://www.mondera.com/diamonds/popup_printdiamondpage.asp?mscssid=BW4JWLFMWJLG8JWW9183NEAEGQ5CBR0D&partno=495967&printmode=Y

What can you guys figure out of this? Can I expect to see Hearts & Arrows when I idealscope my diamond next week or is it just some typo or something...

it''s entirely possible that there is some h&a symmetry. it won''t be the precision level h&a of some branded stones but you may be able to find a nice pattern. i have seen many ''ideal'' diamonds that displayed discernable hearts and arrows.

enjoy your diamond!

Thanks, now i See that every diamond on Mondera.com has this "Hearts and Arrows"-thing on the printer page. Thought I were on to something :-)
Well well, hopefully the diamond still looks good next week :-)
