Liza sent me an email and said I could go ahead with my setting- the WF butterflies setting in a size 4.75. These are my stones:

center: 2.12k CBI
sides: .31 K ACAs

I chose 14k white gold- would there be a reason to choose 18k over 14k? I am not really an expert on metals, and would like your opinions. Also, fellow butterflies owners @yssie etc, is there anything I should specify in my order that you would suggest or just go with the traditional butterflies setting? Thank you!!!

There are so many alloys! I would ask WF which they find easier to adjust / set.

I prefer 18kt myself, but I usually go yellow gold in gold. So there is a tonal issue for me.

I have gone back and forth on 18k yellow too. I'm just worried it might not be the right choice for a K.

Are you color sensitive? I have an ags L in 18k yellow and a gia m in yellow. Both look fine to me!

I’d love to see pictures!

No, I have always gone for K's or L's..

What is the butterfly setting??? Show us please!!! :)

Ohhhhh....my!!!

:kiss2: :kiss2:

14k white gold is a little more durable than 18k and of course less expensive. They would look the same as far as I know.

That's exciting! Is there a reason that you are not considering platinum? Just curious!

Question, @soxfan —why the butterflies setting instead of the HPD Trilogie setting, since you have a CBI centerstone? The settings look pretty similar. (And gorgeous! I cannot wait to see this all put together!)

As to metals, I’m no help on white gold. My preference is platinum. But I will tell you that if one of your issues with platinum is its softness, the alloy used can help a ton. My eternity ring is a platinum/ruthenium, and it looks great. I suspect my ER and wedding bands are the same, because they look really nice after 17 years.

It’s time!!!! :bigsmile::sun:::)

I actually love the idea of 14k nickel WG with K coloured stones. 14k nickel WG will be much more pale than 18k - it reads “white”, no question, but it’s just creamy enough to not contrast with the diamonds the way platinum would. I think WF’s 14k will match the body colour of the stones perfectly

I’ll take some photos when I’m home tonight :))

I just prefer the aesthetic of the butterflies setting. Platinum is just too heavy for me- in the winter my rings spin a ton......

What a beautifully fluid-looking setting! This will be a fabulously curated piece. I can’t wait to see it.
As for metal choice, I am a platinum convert (w/sizing beads for spinning) but I understand wanting gold. I really love the look of the X-1 white gold that Stuller uses. No plating either!
So excited for you!

Finally home! No secret that Butterflies is my favourite three stone setting (it'd better be ) and I absolutely ADORE the look of metal and diamond matching in colour

Couple comparison pics:
  • A is platinum - PT 950/Ru.
  • B is 14k nickel WG. This ring is not from WF, but it's the same alloy that WF uses (or, at least, it's what WF used five years ago and I don't imagine they've changed it!). Next to platinum it looks tinted, but on its own it reads white. Not icy white, but white. @LaylaR compares diamonds and metals to paint colours - go to Home Depot and there's a wall of "white" swatches, and each of them by itself looks white, but when you put them side by side you start seeing contrast...14k palladium WG is closer to icy white.
  • C is 18k WF's nickel WG. On its own it reads pale yellow, not white.
  • D is 14k YG

I photohackjobbed the other three rings out of this pic - wanted to use exactly the same photo. White. Not icy white, an antique-y, "old lace" white.

My diamond is a J (by both GIA and AGS). This is the angle at which body colour is most visible, and it's an angle that's easy to view from with Butterflies. And this stone sure ain't icy white. It's not yellow, either. It's a bit more beige than platinum, but a bit more white than 14k nickel WG... 18k palladium WG would probably be the best colour match for my stone. A K - and yours is a sizable stone @soxfan! - would be a touch more tinted than this, which makes the 14k nickel WG an even better fit IMO if you like an overall warmth  or 18k palladium WG if you prefer a crisper, cooler aesthetic from afar :sun:

A is platinum
B and C are different alloys of 18k palladium WG
D, E, and F are different alloys of 18k nickel WG (E in this photo is C in the three photos from my last post - this is WF's alloy).

The 14k nickel WG band (B in the three photos from my last post) would slide between C and D in this pic.
Any alloy of 14k palladium WG would probably be indistinguishable from B in this pic.

Edit -
@soxfan My palladium WG rings are stuck in vendor vaults at the moment, but I'm happy to mail the WF-alloy 14k Ni-WG and WF 18k Ni-WG bands out to you if you want to take a look in-person before deciding. My LT name is the same as on here :))

You are the best! I have read over your posts three times- 14k nickel white gold it is!!! Thank you!!!!

Looking forward to see the result

This is going to be so beautiful, @soxfan !

Any idea how long it will take for your ring to be made? Can't wait to see it!

No! I'll ask once they get the stones. I fed exed them yesterday:)

Very exciting! I’m now questioning my choice in platinum/ruthenium for my I colored diamond. I just picked it because I love platinum and I love heavy. But maybe I should have considered something like B, C, or D. (thanks Yssie!)

Please do share your completed butterfly ASAP. I love ogling a nice 3-stone set up.

Don’t question your choice, 950 Plat/Ru is my preferred alloy and I also have I coloured stones. You will be pleased.

@soxfan congrats on the setting/metal choice, it will be beautiful!

May 15th!

Woo hoo!! That is so exciting! Can’t wait for you to get it. You’ll be busy baking just to keep your mind occupied!
