It's incredibly hard being a man trying to get my head around this whole diamond thing...

Hi,

I write this having been on a long and eye-opening journey of choosing a diamond and setting for an engagement ring. I've always bought from Tiffany until a few months ago, when I gifted a diamond pendant necklace. I noticed the clasp loop was quite flimsy, but thought nothing of it since heck, it was Tiffany, so surely they know what they're doing. The pendant and necklace fell off, lost forever, and resulted in lots of tears. Tiffany was no longer an option.

Fast forward some more, and I wanted to finally get my most amazing and lovely gf a ring. I knew about BlueNile, so went online and tried to make sense of everything. I ended up shortlisting a few diamonds within budget, researched shipping and duties, picked a setting... and then wanted to see what else was available.

That's when I discovered PriceScope... and haven't slept since. I spent weeks absorbing all your amazing and informative posts, searching for pictures of settings, etc. I also learnt the importance of getting the right cut. My BlueNile choices seemed rather amateurish, and I decided to start over.

Enter Whiteflash. I didn't like the name (still don't)... it sounds like a bathroom cleaning product, or a medical grade toothpaste. However, the amount of information presented transparently is incredible. I kept going back and forth between PriceScope forums and Whiteflash, learning how to evaluate scope and ASET images, and all the various other numbers and parameters. I ended up buying this:

https://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-3983294.htm

It's rather small compared with some of the crazy doorknobs I've seen on these forums. I'm also nowhere near the most profitable customer Whiteflash has had. I've also been rather demanding through chat and email (being located on the other side of the world doesn't help), especially well after-hours in Texas where WF is located. However, all the lovely people I chatted with were professional, friendly, helpful, and did exactly what they said they would do. Not a single person let me down by not meeting commitments, etc. I corresponded with about 7-10 people and they were all flawless.

I wanted to write this note of thanks to both Whiteflash, and all of you that post on PriceScope. The ring is still in transit, somewhere in Indianapolis. I'm terribly excited and can't wait to watch my gf's eyes light up with happiness. She deserves only the best, and all of you have made that happen.

P.S. - Is it wrong to think about upgrading the diamond while another is still in transit? :)

Hi Nm and welcome!

It sounds like you got your head around all this diamond buying malarky just fine and what a cracker for your first and most important purchase!!! Beautiful high specs, perfect cut, it's the whole package -congratulations!!

Sounds like you've got the diamond bug and there are plenty of other diamonds you can buy for your lady and yourself.....:twisted2:

But very well done, take an orange out of the box as the old saying goes - in fact, take two!!:appl::appl:

What a lucky gal to have such a committed fiance-to-be! Congratulations, OP!

This is the coolest post - so brilliantly well done on getting something you’re so exited to give your gf to show her how much she means to you.
And no, it’s not wrong at all! the upgrading bug seems to hit pretty much as soon as you get a diamond. I’m sure your future fiancée will enjoy this impulse of yours!

Great journey, great end result! :)

0.92ct F VVS2 will look virtually identical to a 1ct D IF on the finger, so you have bought well - looks top spec without paying top spec price ;-)

Please do post pics when it arrives and the deed is done!

Ok, that was perhaps a poor choice of words... LOL

Lol, I thought the same thing when I found out about WF! So thrilled I could get over the name because their diamonds are stunning!!! She will be thrilled!!!!:love:

Oh you lot, now I have an image of a guy with atomic white teeth whispering

Whiteflaaaaaaaaaaaasssssssshhhhhhh.........* big grin* in a TV ad for toothpaste.:mrgreen2::D

Excellent diamond choice. What I like the most is how you dealt with 7-10 different people and they kept it straight and delivered on time. As you are probably aware, the more people you have to coordinate the higher the odds of a mishap. This is one of the reasons why small special ops teams can be so effective — well trained, good communication and all working towards the same goal.

Congrats on a beautiful purchase, and best of wishes to you and your soon to be Mrs.

"and can't wait to watch my gf's eyes light up"

They will. The pics and video are good, but the diamond is even better.

I also bought one of their Collection Series, a F VVS2, and took delivery on 4/10. Based on the comments we've received in the past month, I predict that people will think your diamond is 1.2 or 1.25 carats - a third larger. They will be blinded blinded by the sparkles. :)

Congratulations.

oh, GREAT choice!! almost a full carat is nothing to sneeze at! Please post pics when you get it in, what setting did you choose?

I picked a generic Tiffany style setting because the one I wanted would have taken too long to arrive. I need it before our trip to Japan in a week. Wanted either the “Felicity” setting from our favourite toothpaste company, or something from Erika Winters.

it is a beautiful diamond!
YOU DID GREAT!

You sound like a wonderful person for somebody to spend the rest of her life with!!! You really want to make your future fiancee happy, you have gone through all this journey with excitement and patience, you have managed to get for her an AMAZING diamond and you have a great sense of humour! She is a lucky girl! Congrats on an amazing diamond purchase and on your upcoming engagement :appl:

Hi,

You sound like such a nice guy. For me you are the real diamond in this story. The WF diamond comes in second, but too be sure, beautiful.

Annette

Dude, you are awesome to put so much time and effort and for Being willing to learn and be flexible to make changes and adjustments as you become more informed. Like @smitcompton wisely said, you’re the real gem in this.
And also, looks like you got bitten by the diamond bug. :twisted2: Keep planning buddy, and come back and share. You’re among good company of those similarly afflicted.

What a lucky girl to be with such a considerate guy such as you. You're buying a best of the best premium super-ideal stone and already thinking about an upgrade for her? Your post brought multiple grins to my face. My husband loves me but he hates jewelry and would never lose sleep over a stone research.

HI:

Very entertaining. Oh and congrats!

cheers--Sharon

I'm one of those annoying doorknobby people (after YEARS of upgrading), but have to say that the diamond you picked is INCREDIBLE. She will love it!!!!

I knew a woman who lost a diamond earring, when her boyfriend said he wanted to get her a replacement, she opened the box to find an engagement ring and he got down on one knee. A very sweet proposal but she ended up asking right afterwards - did you get the earrings? He still teases her about it. I think the faulty clasp was a blessing iin disguise in your case, congrats

Then you must upgrade the husband!..

NM1213, you did so well! It is such a big purchase, and an important one as will. You picked an amazing stone and your girlfriend will love it for a lifetime. Cant wait to see the finished product and hear your proposal story. I agree with Smitcompton, you are quite a gem yourself.

Haha, no he is the sweetest husband ever but jewelry is just not his thing.

 don’t upgrade the hubby just the diamonds, mine is the same way. He doesn’t like jewelry and I know upgrading most likely wont ever happpen unless I do it myself

Thank you, however she’s the real gem. I only wish I could do more. No diamond can outshine her beauty, warmth, and kindness.
