Back in the 50''s pink or rose gold was very ''in''.

It has never gone out of vogue in Italy, where I have done some of my most enjoyable jewelry shopping! (In the back alleys of Genoa!) It cannot come close to the popularity of yellow gold there, but it is always available and always available in an array of jewelry types. I have a square bangle bracelet in 18K rose gold I found in Genoa.

I have never had the occasion to perform such a feat myself, but I would assume so! Goldplated silver is vermeil.

If Ana is reading this, perhaps she has examples of two-tone pieces that are classy/elegant she can post?

...and is Ana the only person who might own two-toned jewelry?

Deb, deeply offended

(Make that, ''gravely offended and deeply wounded''. I like that better.)
I asked Ana, as the keeper of a peerless library of photos, but should indeed have extended the invite to anyone who owns the real deal as well as images.

I apologize for the photo faux pas, dearest Deb. Please ungrave, unoffend, undeep and unwound yourself and POST, darling.

Personally, I would love to see what you have in the AGBF collection.

Plating doesn't last long on jewelry that rubs against skin or clothing during wear, but fresh and in good condition the look is there all the way.

I don't know if there is a better solution.

John!!!

I would be happy to oblige, of course and find something out of the beaten track.

In the meantime, the THESE GUYS have unsurprisingly put up quite a stash. Down deep gold.org there are a couple of designers I would have looked for anyway: Henry Dunay and Solange Azagury-Partridge.

You are forgiven. It will not be necessary for me to ask my fiancé, Kenny, to defend my honor. (I am not completely sure he said yes to my proposal, but I am sanguine that he will.) I can also call on Storm when I am in true danger. (He may be quirky, but he has certainly proven himself to be an adequate defender!)

Going back 100 years white metals were the metal of choice up until the late 1930''s. Then yellow and rose gold became strong and platinum became a strategic metal to the government. Then in the 50''s white metal came back then died again in the mid 70''s. Gold dominated until the mid 90''s then white took over. Seems like a generational phenomena. Mom had yellow daughter had white. Same thing with diamond shapes.

In other words, whatever you buy now because it is fashionable will be unfashionable (and possibly worn only by women in their 40''s-like YOU) in 10-15 years!

Deb
The secret is taste and you have good taste Deb :) Elegant jewelry that is done well will be around forever. There is design that tends to date it''s self and correctly choosing this design is the key to avoiding the mistakes. I''ve made them all!

When I was in highschool one of my mom''s best friends wedding set was rose gold. I had never heard or seen rose gold before this and I always thought it was so beautiful (the perfect shade of copper). The point is whichever color metal she prefers (what does she weat most often?) is what you should get her. I hate it when people claim there is a right way and a wrong way to do things. It is the matter of taste. I have a friend who has YG rings and she gets so defensive b/c she said people have made faces and even asked her why she chose YG?!? She hates white metals with her skin tone but it hurt me to see how hurt she was. I on the other hand love all colors of gold but really wanted white to match my vintage inspired ring. I am sure my kids will turn up their noses and say YG is the way to go but who cares!!!! Just choose the color that she and you love.

True enough!

If there is a recipe to choose these winners every time, I have not found it. It should be impossible.

Following up about two-tone pieces... Well, I wouldn''t know where to starts showing impressive ones - there so much! Allot of famous and a huge number of un-famous breathtaking ones. One ''general'' feature of the ones I found truly memorable put the match (or contrast) between the color of stones and that of metal. There has been some talk already about yellow diamonds and yellow gold around here, without much opposition to YG in that context. How about this sort of two-tone?

I''ll stop here before posting the entire library of pictures John mentioned. If this is the sort of dated yelow gold one is supposed to throw away...

The bottom line is: The jewels should be set in whatever metal the wearer prefers.

Yes. Stories like the one posted by 'Tacori E-ring' shouldn't have to happen...

These below are not e-rings alright, but I wasn't interested in that while making a small 'to do' list... What I liked in them is the use of metal colors for its own sake. The same designers have engagement rings along this line too and I would be looking for them for colored metals.

Oooooh this is my kind of post!!

My beloved friend Alj can attest to my general feeling about YG, which is that yellow gold is tacky and 80''s...especially when paired with baguettes. She and I have had many a rousing hilarious conversation/debate on it, her being a true YELLOW GOLD lover and me being a WHITE METAL lover.
31.gif
But I''m a GOOD FRIEND, helped her look for her dream YG setting even as I wrinkled my nose in distaste as I emailed her the images to consider.
12.gif

However, LATELY I admit that my head has been turned by a few YG and diamond pieces because of how well the diamonds are set off against YG. I also really adore rose gold and have for a long time, it''s such a romantic and vintage idea, especially paired with diamonds. Looks fab with my skin tone too.
9.gif

I''m even actually considering purchasing a yellow gold and white gold ring with diamonds for the right hand. Just considering it. Loosely. And no baguettes. Someone stop me before I go over to the DARK SIDE.

As for whether or not it''s ''in''...I have seen some high-end fashion mags who were touting only some YG pieces, Greg pointed it out to me with a smug smile, as he is also a tacky yellow gold lover, even owns a gold link bracelet and still wears his college ring which is YG and ONYX of all icky things. He loves them. I secretly think of ways to snatch them while he sleeps and melt it all down to sell for a PLATINUM project.

My fiance would only have yellow gold on her ring. I''m sure she''ll want the same on her bands.

For my band I want two-tones white and yellow gold, no diamonds. I''ve seen some really cool designs with the two colors so I''m getting something like that.

I know! She feels like she has to "defend" her ring which is horrible because her set is very lovely. She says it happens all the time. But as everyone is mentioning I do think that YG is getting really hot right now. I love the hammered gold pieces that Deb posted.

Consider yourself stopped. I will put out the word to all jewelers to treat you the way Las Vegas casinos treat card counters. To get into a jewelry store where yellow gold is sold, you will now have to wear a disguise.

Kenny,

If you live in NY and your GF follows the styles GET PLATINUM OR WG. Maybe if you live in the midwest younger girls wear YG E-rings but not in Boston, NY, Baltimore or DC. I just got done looking for a e-ring in all of these cities and I don''t remember seeing a single YG ering setting in any high end jewlery stores.

Yes some designers seem to be making some stuff in YG but it is very Trendy and in my opinion ugly stuff. The stars may be wearing it but not much of anyone else. Or at least in the 25-35 crowd of the cities listed above.

I agree it should be the wearer''s choice. I find older women aka mom and her peers seem to favor yellow gold. Ironically in my youth I preferred YG but my grandmother gave me a WG diamond pendant in my teens that I''ve worn for over 12 years, I bought WG diamond studs to match and have many pieces in silver. So for my ering plan to go with platinum as well. Also though as a rule platinum is tougher than gold which can be very soft and I tend to be a bit rough and tumble so the more durable the better

I personally prefer white metal (plat to avoid my nickel allergy) on me, my stepmom has yg, my mom has had both and they both looked great, etc etc. It''s up to the person.

And for me, it ALSO depends on the gems in it! I ADORE diamonds and sapphires in white metal, but ruby, garnet, and opal would have to be in yellow. Something about yellow metal and a rich red gemstone

... emeralds and pearls, I could go either way really...

Fun thread!

I actually like yellow gold, too... I have quite a few pieces of it (but no diamonds!) But I LOVE platinum, too, and find that I prefer wearing white metal lately. But I have no doubt that yellow gold will make a roaring comeback. In fact, my daughter-in-law (age 24) has a gorgeous YG wedding set with a beautiful princess cut diamond, and my son wears a simple YG wedding band. Looks lovely!

If it has diamonds in it, I definitely prefer white metals. I just think on me it looks better. But I do like the yellow look too- sometimes I think about getting a small solitaire in a classy yellow gold set just to have! However, when it comes to pieces sans diamonds, I prefer yellow gold with my skin. I have a second wedding ring that is plain 18kt gold and it''s lovely. My husband also prefers a yg wedding ring.

I also agree that it depends on the stone. I have a jade Eternal Circle pendant that comes with an 18kt chain. I tried it on with a white gold chain and it looked horrible

From everyone I''ve talked to, it seems that yellow gold is just starting to come back into style. And I''m glad. I like both. I like that yellow gold makes the diamond more visable from far away because of the contrast. And I like yellow gold with my skin tone. But I like that white gold/platinum blends with the natural color of a diamond. I own pieces in both colors. I still can''t figure out for sure if an engagement ring should be in WG though. Do you guys think it looks bad to wear yellow gold pieces with your WG/plat engagement ring?

I totally agree that people should wear whatever they want, regardless of what is IN or OUT. Something that is not one person's cup of tea is another person's idea of heaven. I don't know the last time that 'rose gold' was in but I really love it and always have.

In terms of white with colored metals, well I have a mental block against mixing the colors BUT I guess with a two-tone item you can't really help it!! So I think it depends on what you are wearing and what you are mixing. aka if your e-ring is YG then can you NEVER wear a white metal in terms of earrings or another ring etc? I don't think so! But sometimes when I wear all YG earrings (I have TWO pairs, both gotten for me by my darling better half who is on a crusade to get me to like YG...now going on year FOUR and as I noted above maybe making some small progress?)...I feel kind of tweaky like I am doing something wrong.

OK...if we are telling the truth now, my only two pairs of diamond earrings are both set in platinum. (Do you have more than two pairs of diamond earrings!!!???)
