Is this Square Cut a keeper?

It is time for me to decide if I want to keep the diamond I bought recently or return it. I had never seen a square cut diamond in person until receiving one via FedEx. so I don't have anything to compare it to. I didn't realized a 0.9 square would look so much smaller than a similar size round diamond.
I am on a quest for a 1.5, but if the 0.9 is a really good one, I think it would be worth keeping.

Can anyone tell from specs and photos...Is this a keeper?
or should it go back to make way [and help pay] for a larger stone?

What I am asking is: is it special enough to keep? If it is I would keep it for my daughter. I know from reading here that it is sometimes hard to find good Asschers.
I just took another photo that might show it better. My eye sight is not great, so when I wear this diamond I can't really see it's beauty. I have to use a loupe or look at photos, otherwise it just looks like a round to me.

In the photos I'm very happy with it - in real life I can't appreciate it as I would like to. That's why I thought going up in size some would help.

I agree that the larger the asscher, the better one can appreciate the faceting. I have a halo ring with a 1 ct asscher, and that is as small as I would consider for a halo, and I'd want larger than that in a solitaire.

I think the stone looks good, but it is not so exceptional that I would keep it when it isn't what you really want. I prefer a smaller table because it just makes the stone look even better to me. I will attach a video of some asschers that GOG made when I chose mine about a year ago. I think my diamond is the second one from the left, and you can see how beautifully cut it is and how the smaller table enhances the look (it makes the crown show more for one thing). I think my stone's table is 58, and I'd look for 58 to maybe 62 max.

Diamond Seeker - Wow - thanks. That video is most helpful. You got a great stone - inspiring! I do have a request in to GOG to help in my quest, so now I'm excited to see what they will come up with.

Any diamond no matter how well cut that does not speak to you and make you proud to be its keeper is not a good deal. So judging by what you are saying and leaving cut quality aside... return it.

Oh, that is great! I would have never found a stone as good as the one I ended up with without their help. Looking forward to seeing your choices!

How did you take the first photo ?

Did you find them to be responsive and professional right from the beginning? They are nice enough but don't seem too interested. Perhaps they get so many requests that they are overwhelmed. I'm looking in the 10-12k range, which seems like enough to get an active response.

That's the photo for my diamond on the James Allen website. Would that I could take great picture like that!
Maybe try with a loupe between you & the camera, but the lighting is tricky - hard to get out of your own way : )

I am having a 1.55 sent on approval from JA to compare. I think that will be the only way to really tell what works for me visually and also as far as having more stone on my hand while I'm working. If the bigger stone speaks I will be sad to say goodbye to the first Asscher. We have spent a lot of time together while I got educated.

The local high-end jewelry designer's opinion on the 0.90 was that it's a great stone. She said she could see the sparkle across the room when I walked in. Her suggestion, if I keep the 0.90, is to do a double bezel - 2 thin bezels that perfectly outline the shape.
I'll post photos when the larger stone arrives - and thanks for everyone's help.

This Asscher is a keeper!

Not a great photo - - -My camera isn't working very well so I only starting shooting when it shut down. Anyway, here is the diamond that arrived from JA this afternoon. I could not be happier. Today is the end of a two month journey - a lot of work & learning.
Now to find a setting!

Congratulations!!! It looks very pretty, and look at those bold flashes of light!!! :appl: :appl: What are your thoughts on setting?

Thank you! It's such a relief to find "the one". I was beginning to wonder...and was going a little mad looking at diamonds all the time.

I hope it's OK to post other people's rings. I really like these settings, but would have mine done more roughly/handmade [like the shank on the gold ring below. I am open to suggestions.

I will always love the clean, classic look of a solitaire... especially on asschers/emeralds, the lines just go so well together. The pics you posted all look great. For other suggestions, how do you feel about pave? Perhaps a miscropave band, or have you seen pics of Natalie Portman's and Nicole Richie's erings? I love how their rings have kind of a gap between the stone and the micropave halo, if you know what I mean. It adds a very vintage-y feel to it... sorry I don't have pics, but a quick google search on those yields plenty of good pics! That's a beautiful stone though, congrats on finding a good one! It will look great in any setting :)

thanks! Great ideas.
[I just want to get it set and wear it - and worry about settings later :( :) ]
go figure - all the diamonds I bought online to try I had set & engraved. This time I had sort of given up, and got a loose diamond - - - and of course, this was the one!
I hate to have it in the dark in a box being squeezed in that pinch-y display-ring thing ~
the search is on!

You found a gorgeous stone! Congrats :wavey:

Yay! :appl:

I am currently insanely excited. I now understand the difference between settling for a really nice diamond that you convince yourself is the one - and finding the one that fits into your heart just right. Pure joy.
I also now understand why people post pages of photos of one diamond - they are just so darned thrilled about this magical thing that came out of a volcano and is sitting right there in their hand.

I wish the same happiness for everyone here.

Nice shots. I can see the color of your fingers through the diamond under the table though.

I think what you are seeing is a reflection of the pink flowers that were next to the stone while I took the photo as there are no windows in this stone.

I totally understand!! haha when I first got my asscher, we waited a whole year to set... I knew I liked the tapered baguette setting early on, but I really took the time to consider every possible setting under the sun  I think it is smart to take that time, and of course it also gives you the time to enjoy looking at the stone from more angles before it is set

While you waited, did you just keep it in a drawer and hang out with it every day?

I called my insurance company and they don't insure loose stones so
I thought I might get an inexpensive setting so I can wear it while I decide.
I went to a custom jeweler today and she it takes 2 months to make a setting [!?!?]...
so meanwhile she has your diamond in her vault all that time

I have an appointment on Saturday with a guy who made a wonderful ring for me 10 years ago. Maybe he can make a setting while I wait.

But I love that you took so long to decide. That's really the right way, isn't it. Get to know the stone first, let it tell you what it wants.

yep I kept it in the safe the whole time haha!!

Puppy4248 - I just happened across your ring on another forum. Wow! It's wonderful! That's a stone that would take considerable thought to style a setting. Just perfect.

I just had to laugh at your post...you were just commenting on how sad you were going to be to have to say good bye to
The .90 but as soon as the JA stone arrived it was like see ya! :cheeky: And I can totally see why...the new stone is gorgeous!
I'm so glad you found the stone that really speaks to you!

Ha. I know - I still feel sad. :( That 0.90 & I have been through a lot together! but I cannot honestly say that at any time did I ever feel misty-eyed when I looked at it. The new one, however...gets me a just little emotional  :appl:

Beautiful stone! I love step cuts in a solitaire or half bezel. It's fairly easy to get it set thru one of the PS vendors. I set mine thru Pearlmans. They carry many designer brands and offer a ps discount. Or if you choose a setting thru JA, the stone is insured by them during the setting process and shipping back and worth. Jewelers Mutual will insure a loose stone during the setting process. You may want to look into that.
