Is this setting considered "high"? (with pictures)

My GF really liked this Tacori ring, but we both had a feeling that the diamond popped out too much (i.e., stood too tall off of the finder). We were worried it would look weird or maybe even catch on to things too easily (not all that concerned about the later, but was a thought). She has small fingers (4.25), so a ring being tall really stands out. This is not a feature she is particularly attracted to. That being said, I think it is important to ask people who are familiar with engagement rings. Maybe my eye was just off that day, and this is in fact normal.

Here is the ring:

I know it is important to imagine that there is no gap in the shank under the diamond and picture as if it is a complete circle. If I do that, I would estimate that the diamond sits about 1.5mm-2mm above where the ring would be if it were not for the holes.

Below I have two other popular designs for comparisons. The Tiffany ring seems to sit almost right on the ring itself. Same thing with the other one.

So is it just me, or does the Tacori ring have its diamond sitting a little high? How does this compare to other rings?

How would you rate it on the following scale? :

0 - Diamond sits right on the ring/band/shank
1 - Diamond sits a bit hight
2 - Diamond sits moderately high
3 - Diamond sits very high
4 - Diamond sits as high as you would ever see on a ring

Many Tacori rings do set the stone a little higher than average. I do not consider that particular one to be too high, however. Some Tiffany settings actually set the diamond too low. I like medium height, personally. That Tacori ring would be as high as I would consider. (1-2 on your scale)

Looking at it proportionally, it appears that the distance from the bottom of the band on the solitaires to the bottom of the diamond is about half or slightly less of the depth of the diamond. In the Tacori setting, that distance is about 2/3 the depth of the diamond.(For the second solitaire, I'm looking at where the bottom of the band would be if it were a regular curve. In all cases I'm just eyeballing it!) Based on that, I'd call it "a bit high to moderately high."

Whether it's too high is a matter of taste. Did your GF have a chance to try the ring in, and how did she feel about it then? FWIW I have a right-hand diamond ring with diamonds set higher than that and knocking it about has never been a problem, but I am conscious of the height.

I don't think the Tacori one looks crazy high or anything. It looks about average to me, maybe just a little high.

I've tried on the real Tiffany setting many times and it's actually higher than it appears in photos.

My GF has tried on both the Tiffany setting and the Tacori setting. She did not think the setting on the Tacori was high initially, but when I mentioned it, she agreed. Now she is questioning that ring (should have kept my mouth shut!). She didn't say anything about the Tiffany ring, or any other ring for that matter, with regard to height.

BTW, for perspective, this is what a really high setting looks like! (Courtesy of a PS'er who came here for advice on a reset....)

Yes that is certainly high! I think she is looking for a ring that would allow the stone to sit a little low, or at least average. Opinions on the Tacori are very appreciated, and keep them coming!

Would the Tacori height bother you?

Hello! I am almost certain that Tacori will alter the height of the diamond according to your preference. I think the ring you are considering is beautiful! If you like the overall height of the setting, but are just not sure if you like how high the diamond sits in the crown, then I would ask that it be lowered a little bit. Another point to consider is that if you leave it as is, you should be able to lower it in the future if needed. BUT, if it's lowered to begin with, raising it in the future would require much more work and cost.

Regardless, it's going to turn out lovely!!

Well the reason I am asking this question (amongst others in other threads) is because I am debating getting this ring at all. It is quite pricey (3500$ in platinum I think) and, with its height, it might be better to go with another option. I am weighing a lot of factors in this decision, and this is one of them!

Yes, now VRBeauty's example is sky high!

Tacori settings are definitely on the pricey side. Do you think you could find something similar for less? Have you looked at Beverley K settings? Gabriel and Co?

I totally understand that! I am a HUGE Tacori fan and my engagement ring is from there. It's hand-engraved and 18k white gold, so the price was much more reasonable than most of their settings. But, many here will tell you that their rings are beautiful but you can find similar designs with respected vendors at better prices. Sooooo, it sounds like you are open to suggestions. It will be easier for you to make a decision when you can compare the Tacori setting to other similar styles (if you really want a style that's similar) and go from there.

If you list your price point for the setting and diamond (if you need help with that also), you should get many options to consider.

I can't wait to see what you find!

I'm a Tacori owner too (model 2510)

As far as 'high' settings go, most Tacori's are low to mid-height. Having said that, I did find it an adjustment when I first started wearing my ring; it felt 'high' and obvious to me. But I wasn't used to wearing rings and certainly not used to wearing something that cost a lot of $$$ -- I was very careful with it and seemed to notice it whenever I would do something with my hands (reaching into my purse etc). Now that I've been wearing it for several months, I realize that it's not very high and it feels completely 'at one' on my hand. So, my thoughts are: That's not a high setting, however, your future fiancee may still have an adjustment period to wearing the ring (tacori or otherwise).

As to whether you should get a Tacori, yes, they are expensive but I still admire the gallery work of my ring EVERY DAY. You could probably get a knockoff/custom, this thread has some good recommendations for vendors. Tacori has a special look to it and there isn't another brand that is quite like it. Basically, either go Tacori or custom to recreate the look. And consider using gold instead of platinum, that cuts the price substantially!

Well, the issue is that we found the Tacori ring higher than the others she liked and tried on, rather than the general height of engagement rings. So as it stands I am trying to get the consensus regarding how high the setting is compared to others. So far seems like it is "a little high". Considering how small her fingers are, though, it might be too high. Still thinking and welcoming new information. I might open a new thread soon to ask opinions on different rings that are similar.

I have a tacori ring, and worried about the same issue when we were buying it. Mine is

In the pictures,it looks high too, but isn't that high in real life. When I tried it in the store, it felt higher than the one I eventually got, I am not sure why. We were also concerned about the price (though mine isn't as expensive as the one you are considering). I have to say, though, that it is lovely. We looked into getting a similar thing custom made, and that would have been about the same price with all the headaches of going custom. I don't regret getting it at all.

The setting looks medium high to me. I prefer low to medium low rings, I find them more comfortable to wear. I work with my hands a lot and I also like that my rings don't catch on things like when I dig in my purse or do chores. It's all a matter of what she wants...some people prefer higher settings. Best wishes!

I don' t think that is above average in height for a tacori ring. I'm sorry if you already posted this but did she try it on? I had a tacori ring with similar height that I thought might bother me but it wasn't an issue at all. You are looking at macro shots that show all the detaiils so while it might look high in the photo in RL it might not bother her at all.
