Is this jeweler pulling a fast one on us?

Up until now, I have been only a reader, not a participant. However, after my soon to be fiance received my ER appraisal in e-mail today, I am a little concerned that the jeweler has either made a mistake or switched out the diamond we agreed to purchase last month. My BF is supposed to pick the ring up this weekend, two hours north (tax-free in another state).

We selected a 1.23 F SI1 oval after seeing it in person. It was eye clean. My BF did not purchase that day, but rather called them a few days later to order, but the diamond we wanted was recorded by the sales woman and also was correctly labeled on his receipt.

Fast forward to today-- BF forwards me the appraisal (ring finally done) and it is listed as a 1.23 E SI1 oval. However, when I check the GIA report online, the diamond is actually 1.2 E SI1, so I am convinced it is a entirely different stone. Furthermore, the depth and table are both 67%, which is higher than the diamond we saw in person and concerning. The 1.2 has no flourescence, but the 1.23 had medium. I am also concerned it might not be eye clean.

What should we do? I was so excited to get my ring this weekend, but now I am worried we are being taken advantage of and this set diamond will not be nearly as beautiful as the one we picked. This Jeweler has been around for decades and has a very good reputation.

Yes it’s a fast one. I suggest you feign innocence combined with accurate perception and say “oh my goodness your bench appears to have somehow used the wrong diamond. What’s the soonest we can have the correct ring completed by?

If you did and the one they have used is not that, it's pretty clear cut!

No, this a Jeweler where you pick out your specific diamond and purchase the one you choose. It isn't like Zales or Kay, which give you a range.

Something is surely wrong or confused. Don't let it get past you. Remind them of the diamond you agreed to take, it's weight, fluorescence level, depth and table sizes and color. Be nice, but insistent. Somebody will make it right, I hope.

If we have the store's SKU number for the diamond on the receipt as well as "1.23 F/SI1" written on the receipt, will that be enough for them to realize there really is a mistake? We don't have the actual GIA # on the receipt.

This is great advice- if you've got a bill of sale with particulars- including a GIA report #, you're in a good position to hold the seller to their word.

Do you think we still have enough information if the purchase receipt says "1.23 CTS Oval F/SI1" and also includes the store's SKU? I only have the GIA Report # for the oval on the appraisal.

I can't speak as a lawyer- but as a merchant, yes, I think you have enough to defend your position if you choose not to go ahead with the purchase.

You might have already stated this- but how did you pay?
If you did use a credit card, that might help.

Well luckily, my BF is a lawyer, so that helps too . He paid on his credit card, in full, which should give him the ability to dispute a transaction if they give him a difficult time. I am hoping when he speaks with them tomorrow, there was a misunderstanding, but I am not holding my breath. It really is too bad, I felt really positively about this jeweler and the entire experience and it pains me to start from square one again if this isn't rectified.

Yes, but this is why you need to know what was on the receipt. If the receipt says something about "like stones" or "equal or greater value" you may be in trouble. If the receipt doesn't say that you're actually in a better position because it would be natural to assume the stone you picked out is the stone you were going to get.

Gotcha-- yea the receipt does not say anything along those lines. Just states the SKU number of diamond we selected with description of exact diamond.

Thanks everyone for your advice! BF called today and turned out there was a mistake with the appraisal. There was another ring purchased that was similar to mine so I guess there was some sort of clerical error. I will definitely be inspecting my ring once I receive it, but for the time being I feel a bit better.

Yes! luckily it is and says so on the new Appraisal which includes and updated GIA report number that I checked online. I will be looking closely at the diamond when I get it to make sure all checks out.

He popped the question last night and the ring is gorgeous— and correct! We have the original GIA certificate so I do feel the original appraisal was a mixup. Pics don’t do it justice....haven’t gotten the hang of it yet. Thanks for your support everyone!

Thanks everyone for your advice! BF called today and turned out there was a mistake with the appraisal. There was another ring purchased that was similar to mine so I guess there was some sort of clerical error. I will definitely be inspecting my ring once I receive it, but for the time being I feel a bit better.

I was just reading this thread through so that I did not reply about something already said when I got to this post from you. I am very happy to see that it was indeed an error.

What I was preparing to say was, "As a diamond dealer it is my joy to assist my clients in getting a beautiful diamond and a well made ring. I cannot imagine that a reputable retailer does not have that same goal. I suspect that when you contact the jeweler you will find that there was an error and that the jeweler will either promptly correct it or offer you a refund.

I simply cannot imagine a reputable dealer intentionally trying to pull a fast one like this and hoping you did not catch it. To me it seems that it has to be unintentional."

I am very happy that all it took was a call from your boyfriend to get this quickly fixed!

Thank you for your post! It is good to know that an error was made in the appraisal. Also for future couples who are making a diamond purchase to always make sure the GIA or AGS number on the diamond is correct on the receipt and any description of the stone including all the 4 C's and any SKU store number to identify your purchase.
