Hi all. I'm new here, and looking for some advice. I am working with a local jeweler to purchase a 1.42 princess cut diamond with the following specs:

EGL cert
Depth: 77.7%
Cut: good
Color: H
Table: 82%
Symmetry: G
Polish: G/VG
Girdle: very thin to slightly thick
Flouresence: none
Measurements: 6.19x5.84x4.53
Crown: 12.4%
Pavillion: 51.5%

They are quoting me $8400, mounted on a simple 6mm 14k white gold band. I've been looking around the internet, and I'm thinking that the stone might be too deep. Does anyone have any thoughts?

Also, I'm reading about lots of places to buy on the internet, but my husband is kind of leary. Are they safe?

Thanks!

Oops. The grade is an SI1.

Clementine, it is difficult to check the price since you forgot to give clarity grade

I am not an expert but have done alot of research and I think that price is HIGH...and I strongly suggest you look on the internet and you will get a much better deal.

good luck!

Hi Clementine! I'd pass on this one... I'd look for a 60% +/- 5% table and 65% +/- 5% depth. A good crown height should be 9% or more...
Also, be careful of EGL's grading... They aren't definitely the strictest and you may be getting an I-J SI 2 or SI 3...
BTW, the price sounds pretty high!

HI Clem--

The table is too large on this stone and yes the stone is maybe a tad deep. I ran a quick Pscope search for you using the AGA cut grade 1A and 1B ranges (table: 62-71%, depth: 64-75%, good-ex polish, etc) and found the following good stones. There were a few others but they either had very thin girdles (could promote chipping) or very thick.

You would definitely have to get more information on these stones, such as crown and pavilion angle, for people to tell you more, but it may be good place to start! They are all larger and cheaper than your $8400 Class 3A cut grade stone, they all have better color grades than the H, and a regular solitaire band in white gold is around $150 at most online places. Be sure to get a vendor with a good return policy and a good rep (all of the below vendors have great reps on this board) and get the stone double checked. Otherwise I don't think you have anything to worry about...some of the online information you can get on a stone can rival offline B&M jewelers hands down.

Thanks for your input everyone! I have learned that I still have a lot to learn about diamonds, and I told my jeweler I was going to pass on the princess cut diamond. I'm now thinking that I may purchase online, but the problem I see is that I don't know where to find an independent appraiser close to me. If anyone knows someone in Iowa, please let me know.
