Is this a bad idea?

I bought a pendant necklace for my Mom and she has decided that she would prefer it if the pendant were turned into a ring. I worry that since it was made as a pendant and has so many tiny diamonds that maybe it won't be durable. Any opinions? I have never had anything like this done before. If it's a bad idea I will just get her a single halo riing.

Any suggestions on who I should send this to to get the ring made? Or even just to look it over and see if it's advisable?

David Klass says he can turn this into a ring and I am so excited! :appl:

I am thinking of a 2.5 mm white gold band. Anyone have any suggestions for a band? Cathedral style or no? Aaah, I can't really picture the profile or band but my Mom is going to be so happy!

I say yes to Cathedral style, because it would look more interesting from the sides. If you just plopped the pendant onto a ring it would sit rather high and look flat without the sloping Cathedral style shanks.

Are you excited to do this project? Or is your wallet making you sad?

I am going way over my original budget but I really don't mind because my Mom is going to absolutely love it. I am VERY excited!

I would return the pendant and find a ring. Here is why. I went back to your previous thread. You mention that you bought this pendant at Costco, which means you can stil return, right?
Ok. Here is what happened to me. I bought a Costco ring. Blue topaz with diamond halo. With their certificate that claimed the diamonds are all I color and vs quality or better. It was also stamped made in China. Should have been my first clue. But I get it sized. And it gets dingy. Dingy. I mean wtf? How did it go from bright white to dingy? I ask my bench. He says it’s from China. China uses cheap coatings that can’t withstand sizing. But he would try to polish it and rhodium dip it again. Which he did. And it looked 75 percent better but became dingy within 2 weeks. The diamonds did not look to be I color either.
Now I have no idea if your pendant is from China or if you will have the same issue. But considering the great options everywhere out there for cluster rings, I would abort this project. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Yay!! Great news! I think a 2.5 band would be good. It has to carry that hunk of bling! I can’t wait to see it done! How long will it take to do?

@nala, I am really sorry to hear about your Costco ring. :cry2: Thanks for telling me about what happend to you.

Yes, I can still return the pendant. Did your certificate say "Costco Wholesale Article of Description" and then have "Graduate Gemologist (GIA) #" at the bottom? That's what mine says and a sticker on the pendant's chain says US and a number. Where did yours say made in China?

@Mamabean, He said it would take 10 days to make once he gets it. I'm not sure what to do now after reading Nala's post, though. :???:

I bought that diamond heart pendant i showed you in white gold from Costco..and it’s still bright white. My friend bought a diamond necklace also in white gold that she never takes off and it’s still bright white. It may be because Nala got hers worked on..I would probably call David Klass and see what he says..

It was a certificate with the picture of the ring and the details like the carat weight, etc. Sorry that I’m fuzzy on the specifics. I think the made in China was on the sticker. Now that you mention it. Also, my bench knew right away that it was made in China.

Yes. Definitely Bc I got it worked on, even tho Costco claims it is sizable up to one size. Which is all that I did. My bench works on all my jewelry so I know that it was not an error on his part. I even thought I was imaging things so I wore my ring to Costco to compare it to a new one and yeah, I couldn’t not explain the dinginess while the new one was still super shiny.

@nala, I suppose mine was made in the US since it has a sticker that says US, but I guess I can't be sure since it doesn't say "made in".

I told my Mom about the issue you had and she still really wants this pendant turned into a ring. Do you think that David Klass would be able to tell if it would have that problem if I sent it to him for inspection?

The pendant is ~9mm square and I haven't seen a ring like it. I think not using the pendant and having a ring custom made to look like the pendant would be much more expensive.

Did your stones look dingy or just the metal? Was is just where it was sized or the whole band or ... ?

Here is a not great photo of the certificate

Yes. That’s my certificate. TBH. I couldn’t put my finger on where the dinginess was coming from. I think maybe it was bc my ring had a lot of metal. But the diamonds were supposed to be I or better yet my other non very diamond bands were so much brighter.

I would call Costco and ask them where that pendant was made. You may have to call the corporate office.

It took a long time on hold but I finally got the answer - Made in China. :((

Oh no..but I was thinking about how the pendant doesn’t show much metal..The diamonds are set close together..David will be making the shank. It may just need to be rhodium dipped every so often. If the diamonds are sparkling and your mom loves it....you may not have the problem Nala had. If everyone had the problem there would be reviews everywhere saying their jewelry turned on them...I would probably talk to my mom and tell her what could happen and see if she wants to go through with it...I have a feeling lots of stock settings are made in China....

Great news - Instead of using the pendant and turning it into a ring, David is going to make the ring from scratch and recreate the look of the pendant for the head of the ring.

I am super excited and want to get this ring made ASAP, but I am clueless about what kind of profile the ring should have. David suggested sending pictures to him. It seems like all the profile shots I find are made for solitaires or rings with large centers. Since there is no big pavilion here (the middle diamond is only .13 ct and the total ct weight is .50), I am not sure what to do. All is know is that I want 14 kt white gold with 4 claw prongs and probably a 2.5 mm band.

Any suggestions?

Yay!!! The only suggestion I would have is to not have the slightly bigger stone in the center be raised..I’m not very helpful but excited for you!

I would google antique cluster rings and look at the side views. That might give you some inspiration.

Thanks for the suggestion, @Maisie. I did that last night but the profiles I found looked too antique. I think this ring needs to look more modern to work.

@Mamabean, Good advice. The pendant is very flat and I agree that DK should stick to that. My Mom was joking about just gluing the pendant to her finger.

She sounds funny..You’re such a good daughter to do this for her. She’ll be bragging to all her friends!

That's beautiful, @Maisie! Thanks.
