I''m just wondering if there is any seasonal or annual variations in the supply or price of diamonds. I am looking to buy a ring soon, but I am having trouble finding the exact stone that I want. Can I expect more diamonds to come onto the market in the next few months or is the supply pretty static?

Yes, supply CAN be very varied.

There is "shortage" of certain sizes, shapes and qualities at the moment.

At peak seasons (such as xmas time) you may find that prices are held more firm to the prices posted, while in slow periods, dealers may want to accept a little less.

Recently, it appears to be "smoothing" out a bit more, and a tad less seasonal, but in qualities where there is inventory available, the pricing will be competitive.

Is it common practice to bargain with internet diamond retailers?

Not really as their overhead is very low and they offer very good prices as is.

Possibly.... it is a stone by stone call. Certain clarity and color combinations which are a little less "desireable" there could be some "wiggle room".

Gem reports don''t tell the whole story about a stone, and with expert analysis of the minute quality details, there may be some influence with a seller to negotiate.

Not every internet seller lists low prices. Most of the ones here do, but there are lot of internet selling websites where there are higher prices.

You need to study and compare, and possibly get more information about a stone that you consider, that will help you to understand which ones are competitively priced, and which ones may have a little wiggle room.

HA!!! Nah, just a consumer. People always ask if there is room to negotiate on the price of a stone but internet vendors don't have a lot of room to do that. Can't hurt to try though

Several of the vendors that I've been trying to work with to get a new stone have told me they will have new inventory this week or next. Does that relate to the Las Vegas show? I'm guessing it does since they all have the same time frame, but maybe I'm just making a bad assumption.

One vendor just got back from Israel last Friday and said something about this being the "season for buying trips." Is there really a "season"?

(As you can see, I've become skeptical of just about everyone at this point since they all promise me a great new stone and then either produce NOTHING, or even worse, BAD ones!)

By the way, that article on negotiation is GREAT! I will go into the negotiation on this stone better equipped than I did on the last one!

It is important to remember that diamonds are natural and as such there will only be a finite number available to you at any one time that fit with your desired criteria. "New" diamonds do come onto the market as well as the stones that people have sold / traded up on.

Whilst you can try to bargain with internet retailers I very much doubt that you will get anywhere with most of them, the reason for this has already been covered by Kaleigh and basically relates to the fact that they generally offer very good prices already.

DeeJay, the reason that your vendor has said that it is the season for buying trips is I suspect related to the Las Vegas show, although in reality very likely relates to the fact that they probably used the Las Vegas show to form new partnerships with new suppliers, thereby being able to offer you "new" diamonds from their new partners carried inventory.

Thanks for that info, I appreciate it!

I don''t know about seasonal but there are usually runs around the holidays (Christmastime, etc) and Valentine''s day, particularly.
