Is there a prong tutorial?

I have searched various word combinations, but cannot seem to find anything prong specific. Also, I'm not sure if it is just me, but many of the links in the Knowledge section simply point back to the knowledge section, rather than taking me to a new page with information. Has this info been archived or is it a glitch?

We are trying to make a decision about prongs. Is there a good tutorial or chart that clearly illustrates the different prong styles, widths etc? Are there any styles that change the appearance of a stone and how/why? Does stone size influence the decision? If this info does not exist, it would be very helpful to compile for those of us new to this. =)

The inspiration for the setting is this and our stone is a 1.5 carat RB WF ACA. Knowledge and advice appreciated.

Sorry for that massive photo! It didn't look that big when I attached it.

Hopefully fixed now.

I have that exact Stuller setting - purchased through Good Old Gold, and they did a very nice job keeping the prongs small. They aren't "claw prongs" like CvB / Erika Winters / etc could do, but acceptable and unobtrusive. Are you having the setting custom made?

Thanks @ecf8503! Is it too much to ask to see a profile photo of your ring? :D

Yes, we are having the setting forged and will obviously discuss it with them in detail when we go back. We do think we want smaller prongs, but there does seem to by stylistic variations and we feel like we lack the vocabulary to express this. Some look like claws, some are flattened, some are a bit pulled out etc. Does this vary by artist or is it a bit more standard? Are there any artists, besides the above mentioned, known for their amazing prongs?

Sorry if this is a series of uninformed questions but we really want to be able to get it right the first time. Is there a proper ratio for the diamond size/shank size or is it just a matter of preference or artistic licence?

@ILikeShiny, thanks! I had seen the first but not the second. Will go have a look now..

Oh yes! That was exactly the type of this I was looking for. You're a star!

Sure! I'll take some -

Ok here's mine - it's a 0.818ct AVR 5.95mm diameter on a size 5.5 ring.

@ecf8503 Wow, that's really beautiful. Thanks so much for sharing. :)

It has really delicate details, but still sturdy and not too thin. For a "stock, mass produced" setting, it's very nice.
