Is there a "new to buying watches" forum?

My DH is considering buying his first "nice" watch and is overwhelmed with the choices. The CS forum has a "new to CS, read this first" sticky which is really helpful. Is there anything similar for watches? I know there are a few watch experts on PS. Thanks.

If you do a search in this (Hangout) area for watches, you should get several great threads with lots of amazing information for people just learning about watches. I'm not an expert (by far!) on watches so I can't offer more. Those threads should get you started and I'm sure some of the watch experts will chime in too if you can give a bit more information on what sort of watch he's looking for.

Thanks for the replies. His budget is $1-5K (I know it sounds wide. If he finds something he likes at the lower end he'll get it now, if it is at the higher end he'll wait a few of months for his bonus). He wants something to wear with jeans & a dress shirt or a suit. He doesn't like the super oversized watches that are popular right now. He has a bigger wrist and wants it to fit comfortably with a shirt cuff. He has looked at Shinola & Detroit Watch Co (we're originally from MI) and Breitling, but is open to other brands (except Rolex, that is the "go to" in our region). Value for the $$ is important and he is struggling with understanding when the big price gaps are due to brand name, materials, or mechanics (which he has the least knowledge of).

DF, the pics are very helpful. The second pic is lovely, like a piece of art. Is that something he can find out through online research or does he need to have the salesperson remove the back cover?

No, the watch come with a sapphire crystal back. How old is your husband?

He is mid 40s. He wears a watch every day and while he isn't rough on it he wouldn't want anything he would have to be extra careful with or that requires a lot of maintenance. His only other jewelry is a simple wedding band (alternates between YG and WG, more into the WG currently). His tastes run more classic, but he does appreciate unique details. He is into guitars and collects based on different inlays, woods, and finishes in addition to sound quality. Thanks, DF.

Tell your husband to check out Omega and Grand Seiko. They are very popular among his age group.
