Is it likely for Costco to mark a diamond heavier than it is

Just bought a solitaire pendant with 0.5 round diamond. Took it home and measured it, found its diameter to be 4.4-4.5mm. This seems significantly smaller than usual. From what I can tell, the cut is pretty decent. And on the Costco appraisal, it states 0.5 ct or greater. What do you guys think? Thanks.

That seems very small. Was it listed as .5 ct TCW? or just the center stone?

listed 0.5 for the center stone.

anyone?

It could be 2 different things:
1. What are you using to measure the diamond with at home? The only accurate method is using proper calipers, not a ruler.
2. The stone be deep, therefore faces up smaller than expected. You said that the cut is decent. What is your definition of decent?

Thanks for the reply

1) I used an engineer ruler (suppose to be pretty accurate) but you are right, there is most likely some human error. Though I did have another 0.5 ct diamond to compare it with in the store. It did look noticeably smaller.

2) I am no expert, though I did have a GIA certified ex diamond on my ring to compare it with. This 0.5 ct looked good next to it. so I figure it is at least a good cut.

Can't imagine they would do that deliberately.Of course your Diamond could have a deep cut or you measured incorrectly. That being said, Costco is currently embroiled in a legal battle with Tiffany & Co due to Costco labeling some of their rings erroneously as "Tiffany"

Costco is a reliable enough outfit but it's a serious stretch to call the document you're looking at calling it 0.50cts or greater an appraisal. This was prepared in bulk by their supplier without the benefit of actually looking at the item being described. Photos, grades, weights and descriptions are all 'approximate'. The price is the manufacturers suggested retail price. Whether or not any of that is useful to you depends on what your objectives are but I'm hard pressed to think of much it would be good for.

If you want a half carat center stone, I would return this one. If you love it and think the price is fair for say a .40 ct center, then I would consider keeping it.
