A friend of mine has a 1.44 RB diamond. It is real nice. Seems like a good size because it is below the price point of 1.50, which means higher prices. Is this size hard to find?

Sure, it is a little harder to find. They do come along but you have to wait and watch for them. I was originally looking for this size but ended up with 1.6. Obviously a cutter will try to get a 1.5 out of a stone, so that''s why the 1.4 range isn''t too plentiful.

Because of the price/ct. bump at the 1.50 point, every mfg. of diamonds will do what every they can to get the 1.50. On the other hand, the demand side where you are at is strong.

It may seem like a bargain to go just under the 1.50 but do the math, because with the supply side down and the demand side up, the price graph would be in an upward mode also.

Also, one could generalize on these two points as well, which certainly won''t be in all cases, but a stone weighing right at 1.50 ct. is more likely to have "weight saving" characteristics, while a diamond that is more than a point or two under 1.50 should have nice make (read cut) to it.

Bosie, to comment in a ''round about way......last year, my 1.44 Lazare Kaplan did not rise in value.....but my 3.17 HOF did....both, obviously, branded stones.

I do not know how the market is today....as the info above was from early 2006. But the jump in price ( double what we paid for it in 2004 ) of the 3.17 stone vs the price remaining the same of the less than 1.50 stone kind of re-enforces what you are saying.
