I've been looking at this diamond, going to put it in a halo. Is this a good performing diamond? Will a .63 look to small in a halo?

The proportions are where you want them to be, but GIA gave it only "very good" for polish, so that would have me concerned and simply for that reason, I would reject it.

What is the budget? No diamond is "too small" in my opinion, it is what your budget would allow.

I would go a little lower on the color in order to be able to pick up a little extra size.

I really want the jewler to do the setting, his work is amazing, unfortunately this is the only diamond I could afford :(

What is your budget for the stone?

Depending on the setting I'm looking at 5k in total.

i found the stone on bluenile and its right at $2k. so you're looking at spending almost $3k on the setting? While we really appreciate a well made setting on PS.... i'm not sure how many would suggest spending more on the setting than on the stone. UNLESS your lady has said "i want this exact setting, i don't care about the size of the stone." Can you elaborate on the situation? Unless your absolutely certain about going this direction of course.... i just like to see someone get the most out of their budget.

I forgot to make mention that I'm in Canada so the diamond is actually worth about 3.2k and the setting about 1.8k

So, it sounds like you just want help reviewing stone from your B&M. It's too bad, because the data available to us online is far superior than what your B&M are offering for eval of performance. If it helps your anxiety, you might poke around in the eye candy area to see the many online stones bought ranging from modest to OMG in size and value.

Ykes. Yes you are getting ripped off to spend 3600 on a .63 stone.

I would absolutely NOT buy that stone. esp if a b&M store is saying that is the only stone you can get for that much money. 3600$ is a LOT of money to spend on a ring. Do yourself a huge service and compare with the quality stones online and if your jeweler says they wont help you unless you buy the stone from them walk away.
if they are saying they will charge you less for the stuff if you buy both they are ripping you off on either the stone the mount or both.
You can get a much larger and nicer stone with a nice halo for that much money.

So, to put nicely, as mentioned above... you're paying more than you should. Again, did your intended specifically request this EXACT setting?

I totally get wanting to SEE what you're buying before you buy it. It's hard to drop a load of cash on something sight unseen. BUt that's what is so great about this community. None of these people helping you have anything to gain from helping. They just GENUINELY want to see you buy a spectacular diamond for your intended. They do this day in and day out and love the thrill of the hunt, working to maximize a budget. Again, they have NOTHING to gain. But your B&M store does.

Let's look at this another way. Say you want to buy a new car. Brand spanking new. So you visit a few dealerships in town. Dealership A shows you ONE car. It's the make and model you want. Maybe not the color. He tells you, "this is the only car i have that is in your budget. and it's at the top of your budget. But it doesn't have leather seats, seat warmers or the higher end rims you like. this is all i have. take it or leave it." So you go to another dealership in town, (dealership B) give them your budget and tell them what you want. They say, "You know, i don't have anything on the lot but if you put one on order, i can have it to you in 3 weeks. Everything you want, leather seats, the exact rims you want and hey, it even has seat warmers. What color do you want?" What do you do? which is the better deal? Do you purchase the car from dealership that has ONE car to offer you that doesn't have everything you want or do you put in an order at the other dealership and purchase a new car with all the bells and whistles, sight unseen? I know what i'd do.

Again, this is all dependent on whether your intended has said she has to have that particular setting or not. Because i am about 99.9% sure we can find you a comparable setting unless this guy has some amazing, out of this world setting.

I really appricate the time you took to write that message, I feel like I over analyze things and that's my downfall. I would be a little more open to online if I knew a person in the city that would set the diamond for me. A lot of places say they won't set he diamond unless you buy the diamond from them.

Also as much as I love a majority of the help that I've received on here, I forgot to mention that I'm in Canada so a lot of the diamonds that were suggested were a bit off budget for me if you consider the diamond and the setting together.

I would like to consider any diamonds people would suggest in my price range of about 4000 (CAD) i would greatly appricate any help.

Of course they wont, they want you to pay and arm and a leg to purchase a stone from them. That said, not ALL B&M stores are looking to gouge you. Where are you in Canada, maybe someone here has a suggestion for a jeweler?

Can you show us the setting you're looking at? I'm all about one stop shopping, it's so much easier. Just make sure you have a great return policy, wherever you purchase from.

I kind of think IDJewelry would be able to help you, maybe you should give them a call. http://idjewelry.com/ Yekutiel does really great things within a tight budget, his pricing blows everyone out of the water and is really accommodating with videos and such. Also has a lot of settings available to choose from. (he has a b&m store in NYC) I find Gabriel & Co has some really beautiful halo settings and it's really easy to find images online of their completed settings.

The setting was a tight halo, with diamonds on the band. The diamonds on the band is what got me, because they are not like the other generic ones, they looked like they were floating and not attached to the band... it was breath taking lol

Unfortunately I cannot find a picture of this to show, so that's why I'm having a hard time because I'm sure I can find someone to make it

I just want to give my 2 cents. I was searching B&M a lot and then started searching online and was blown away by the price difference and the quality. everyone here is so helpful, and if you see they do not push 1 site or 1 person, its a WIDE variety across the internet just looking for the best for you. I worked with Yekutiel from ID for a few weeks back and forth phone and e-mail and he will find you the perfect stone and setting (that he will only approve after he inspects it in hand not just online) for your budget. There is also a 30 day no questions return policy, so if you don't love it there is no worry. Give him a call and talk him through what you want and found so far and you will not be disappointed, your budget will go so much further online than B&M.

I'm imagining it was something with larger stones vs smaller pave on the band with minimal metal, is that right?

"diamonds on the band" = pave shank
"floating" = u-cut or single-prong or shared-prong?

OP - Something like this?

or maybe this style of pave?

Now to find a jewler who will do this with an online diamond :S

My e ring and wedding band together were $3600 (US) and my diamond is a .795 and AGS000. I got really lucky to find a stone priced like that but $3600 can get you bigger and better than the .63. Definitely take a look at the stones others posted here - they are very kind to scour the online sites for you as they did for me! I would feel much better trusting people on here than your local salesman who needs his/her commission/ often times doesn't know anything about diamonds. Post a photo of the setting - I'm sure it isn't that uncommon - pricescopers here would be able to direct you to similar or better settings or to someone who could custom make your ring - it really isn't more expensive than your stock setting. And sometimes it's better to just get a simple and inexpensive setting and maximize what you can get in terms of the stone as settings don't hold value very well and many of these online stones are also upgradeable. Your fiancée can choose/create on of her dreams later on - has she indicated that she wants this particular setting?

I'm leaning now more towards that considering that now I've found the setting on here, just need help finding that perfect stone (the ones already stated are a bit over my budget considering the usd to cad) also need help finding a jewler who will pull off this amazing setting.

In terms of the setting, she hasn't asked for it directly but I know she will love it, I don't think she wants a crazy big diamond, just something that will shine!

Does she have a Pinterest page that you could snoop around in? Lots of ladies "pin" designs and whatnot of inspiration pieces, whether wedding-related or not.

What kind of setting does SHE want? Don't get what you like, unless she liked it first :). If you don't know for sure, you could put most of the budget into the center stone in a plain solitaire for the proposal. Then later, after you save up more, and she can weigh in, pick a setting for the wedding present, or if elaborate, for an anniversary.

For instance, if my hubby had bought me a halo ring for our engagement, I'd have been elated about his proposal, bit disappointed in the setting. For me, I prefer a center stone to be main stage. I can add bands for blingier days, and add more for super bling. But I can wear a plain band or bands if I just want to see the e-ring.

My (first) ering is a .63 in a solitaire, and it is the star of the ring. I wish I had more pictures of how I change the look with stackers, but here's a couple.

I have gotten a little of the SO ideas on what she wants. Halo is def what she pointed out. I got her on james Allen to give me an idea, but I still want a bit of the shock value

Just a heads up. I just posted a nearly identical setting in the preloved section of the forum. It originally had a 0.73 ct round brilliant, which you could surely get a diamond of that size and stay in your budget. I am willing to work on price.
