Hi PriceScopers, I was looking at my oval cut diamond (E S1 .58 carat) in my office the other day and I realized that the diamond looked quite yellow. For a moment, some thrilling/scary thoughts popped in my mind (the jeweler didn't assess the diamond correctly... swapped with the different diamond etc) but I realized that the stone was simply reflecting the yellow-is office lighting.

It was interesting because the oval cut diamond was the only stone that looked more yellow. The surrounding small stones of halo setting seems to be influenced less. Also, I did not notice that happen with my solitaire with a round brilliant.

Is it possible that an oval cut reflects color of surrounding environment and lighting more than round brilliant cut -- probably due to the larger surface, although they were cut in a similar way?

An oval will draw light from a much wider area than a round and a gigantic area compared to melee.
That can make colors in the environment more noticeable.

I have an almost 3ct MRB ideal cut diamond that can look yellow if the lighting is crap. You'll notice it much more in larger diamonds than smaller

Thank you, @Karl_K for your response! Do you think that fancy cut in general reflects the color in the environment more in general than a round brilliant?

3ct... wow! But yes, I can see that a bigger surface can reflect the color in the lighting more... Thanks!

I was at my physiotherapist the other day and looked at my ring to see it was reflecting turquoise... which was odd since I was in a white treatment room/cubicle. Once I looked up though, I could see that the turquoise was coming from the walls of the main clinic which were much higher up and behind me. The places diamonds get colour from is incredible!

In general yes, other than maybe a princess cut they are pretty directional. Maybe more directional than a round.
