I work with a woman from India who has the most beautiful yellow gold jewelry. I don''t normally prefer yellow gold, but the gold she wears seems to be a richer, more orange/copper shade compared to most American yellow gold I''ve seen. The difference is striking.

I assume the jewelry was purchased in India. Do they use different alloys there that leads to the difference in color? Or is it possibly a higher gold carat (22k vs 14k)?

Is there anyplace in the US that carries this color of yellow gold?

It''s probably a mix of the higher carat weight and the alloys they use. You can go to an Indian area in your local city and get some, but the styles won''t necessarily be "American".

Indian jewellery generally uses 22 ct gold. I''ve seen a website from the US that sells only Indian jewellery - I can''t find the link. If I remember rightly, it''s called Gold Palace?

There''s a designer jeweller who also works in high carat gold - again my memory is failing - his name is something like Gurhan?

Hope this helps a bit. Let me know if you can''t find the sites - I''ll try to find them again.

A lot of gold Asian jewelry (not just Indian) is 22 karat gold or even 24 karat gold. In Asia what we consider to be gold is not considered gold at all. I have had difficulty finding certain things I want in 22k or 24k. I would like some simple charms for a charm bracelet made in 22k instead of 14k or 18k gold, but they are not generally available. I believe that there have been other threads on this topic here on Pricescope. I will take a look and if I find anything interesting I will post a link here. I am a yellow gold lover :).

The site is www.goldpalace.com. An Indian friend buys 22 ct jewellery from an ebay seller in Singapore.

This wasn't the thread for which I was searching, but it certainly contains a great picture that shows the close correlation between greater gold purity and richer color.

Yep. The older generation of Asians in the U.S. still consider 14K and 18K no better than costume jewelery. You should see my mother turn up her nose at anything that''s not 24K.

I was really, really hoping yo would show up here, Hest. Some of what I learned about gold I learned from you. Unfortunately, I have also developed a hankering for the "good stuff", which is not ONLY pricier, but also harder to FIND here! Yet another expensive habit to feed!

Yeah. I, personally, though, don''t like yellow gold because I just look bad in it. Plus, it''s so bright that it looks somewhat gaudy to me. Still, I recognize that it''s more pure and completely understand where my older relatives are coming from.

22kt chain... well, thick ones maybe, but if you do find a dainty one that is one fragile jewelry item. Learned that the hard way

Hi!

Just wanted to say that I love gold and although I went through a "white gold" phase I''m back to yellow gold as a preference now - the higher the carats the better!
I favor 18K gold as most of Europe does. We consider the 14K gold Americans use as "fashion jewelry" and it is looked down upon. 22K and 24K are fantastic, of course, but hard to come by and they need to be THICK to withstand wear. I''ve seen some old Indian 24K pieces that are enameled to protect the gold, I suppose - which sort of beats the purpose of a 24K metal IMHO.
Recently, I''ve seen a pink colored 18K gold that looks gorgeous. 3-colored rings or earrings with 18K white, yellow and pink gold are breathtaking.

I love 24k gold. I had 2 24k rings. One had a sailboat on it and was resizeable by the overlaping bands. For my HS graduation, my mom got me a ring that looked like a Rolex watch. They used to sell them in Chinatown. Maybe they still do. Unfortunately, I lost both rings. Now, I just wear 2 cheap looking (10k?) school rings. Maybe it is time to see if I can have a look in the family safe.

My mom just told me last week that my uncle is going to China this summer and she and my dad were thinking of going too. That''s always good because they always bring some nice jewelry back. I almost forgot. They got me a 22K ID bracelet 4 or 5 years ago. But I lost that too.

Just a minute. I did *not* say I was thinking of going to China, but are you my daughter?

That's true. I'm Chinese-American, and my grandmother only buys 24K gold, which traditionally is considered more valuable. Over the years she has given me a couple of jewelry pieces that I never wear to avoid damaging the soft gold. I guess the idea is not to wear them anyway, but to save the gold for its value.

In traditional Chinese weddings (and perhaps in other Asian cultures as well), the bride would usually receive 24K gold jewelry from her family and close relatives (usually of the older generation) as part of her dowry. During the tea ceremony, the elders would put the jewelry on the bride as the bride and the groom served tea to them one by one according to family rank. The gold jewelry usually consisted of elaborate necklaces or bangles/bracelets. If the bride has a big family, she would almost look like "Mr. T" by the time the tea ceremony is over. :)

Edited to add the photo of the illustrious Mr. T

Sorry, Deborah. I''m no one''s daughter.

singingbell, is this tea ceremony usually done on the bride side of the family? When my brother got married, they did this tea thing on our side of the family. And yes, the bride did look like Mr. T. At the wedding banquet, they had 1100 to 1200 guests. I had never seen so much 24k gold jewelry in my life. They even hired 2 Brinks security guards for the banquet.

Scott Kay is now doing rings in 19K gold for a richer color, but still have reasonable strength. He uses platinum prongs to retain gemstones.

That is very interesting. I would love to see photos! Are *all* his rings now 19K?

From my experience, the tea ceremony is done at both the bride's house and the groom's. But I remember hearing that in the old days, the bride would serve tea to her parents alone before the groom arrives, to bid them farewell and thank them for raising her; then when the bride and groom arrive at the groom's place, they would serve tea together to his family. So there may be variations of the ceremony done over the years.

When a good friend of mine (of Cambodian descent) got married recently, they only had a tea ceremony at her parents' (her husband's family is not Asian). She has a big family! I still have vivid memories of her petite frame gradually disappearing under the growing pile of gold necklaces around her neck. Now that I think about it, it's very possible that the groom's family may also present the newlywed couple with gold jewelry, but I don't remember for sure -- it has been a while since I witnessed the tea ceremoony on the groom's side.

Brinks security guard at a wedding banquet? Now *that* I haven't seen before!

Deborah:

The 19K Gold supplements his platinum line. I have seen one sample in a Jewelry store, and seen the new vendors catalog in the same jewelry store.

I like the concept and was going to show one of the rings to my GF as a possible setting.

Thanks for posting this link. What beautiful gold pieces!!! I''ve been wearing white gold and silver for the last couple of years, but I''m thinking this spring I''ll be breaking out the yellow gold with a white linen shirt and jeans or cropped khaki''s.... It''s freezing here and I''m dreaming of Spring!

There''s a designer jeweller who also works in high carat gold - Gurham?
Gurham... Ro&Me, Zolotas, Lalaounis, Vendorafa... pretty trendy.

Some designs from these end up at Signedpieces and Estatejewels - worth a look if you like archaic jewelry

I bought a pair of 22K yellow gold earrings today. I have to say that it was this thread that made me do it. It had me thinking about 22K and 24K gold for a week! When I took my dog to see a specialist in another town a week ago I noticed an Indian jewelry store next door to the vet. Today I drove down there again and looked. As I said, I emerged with a pair of earrings. At some point maybe I will photograph them.

I am posting a link to a new website I found with 22K jewelry (albeit a limited selection). For those who are interested, it is here:
