I did do a search but obviously I couldn't get quite the right key phrases since I didn't turn up any results. Maybe the question is so dumb nobody bothered to ask.

But when you get your ring reset, what happens to the old metal of the setting? Does the jeweler reuse it or just keep it? If you go from a platinum setting to a yellow gold setting, does the jeweler just keep the platinum (and does he give you a discount on your new setting since he gets your old metal?)? Or can platinum from a setting not be reused like that? Or let's say you have a 6-prong Tiffany setting, but you now want a cathedral setting. Can the jeweler reuse the metal from your original setting?

I paid $900 for my platinum cathedral setting so I'm just curious if I'd have to hypothetically pay another $900 again if I wanted a different plain platinum setting.

Totally hypothetical, just wondering. Thanks for humoring me.

Most likely it will be sold as scrap and be melted down and refined again fore use.

Lots of people keep their old settings and put colored stones in them.

But I''d imagine you could get some credit towards a new setting if you gave the jeweler your old setting.

It''s not a stupid question at all!

Well... I''ve never asked but I''ve also never had any vendor offer me any money for an old setting -or- offer to melt it down and re-use it. I just always get the old setting back, empty and lonely and forlorn-looking!!!

Yup. Me too.

I''d love to reuse, but I just have to pick the styles that can''t take any size but the one they''re made for!
