Increase in size worth dropping 2 grades in colour?

Yep, go with the J.

I'm going to shake things up with a nay vote on the J. Compared to the G it looks markedly warmer yellow in 2 out of the 3 pictures. The size difference is visually significant and both stones sure are sparkly.

However, I know I'm a size gal and 9 times out of 10 I'd go for size...but that yellow would bother me. A G to a J is a HUGE jump. I'd rather do G to I as the last resort. Too bad there isn't more of an I SI1 or similar that is in-between.

Did you check to see if the I SI2 is eye-clean? If it is OR if the inclusions can be covered with prongs, that would be an excellent choice and I'd go for that.

However, as of now my vote is for the G.

I'd go for the J. I didn't see the color difference, but the real question is did you and/or your girlfriend? They both look like great stones, but the size difference is noticable. I also like that fact that the J has the better HCA score. Not that 2.1 is bad, but I assume the other one is better.

Also, if you got the J and found the color did bother you, Linda has a return policy, so you could change your mind.

I'm coming back to say they both are very pretty and either is a great choice. But all things considered, I, too, am a "size" gal and the J's color seems very minimal to me. I often have to remind myself that most people have no clue what they are looking at when they look at diamonds...

A compromise is a H or I with a 5 pt jump...?

Thanks for all your opinions everyone. I really appreciate your insights.

I did forget (and this is my mistake) however to mention the most important thing, that my gf is kinda particular when it comes to colour of the diamond. (having seen other friends' diamond rings and noticing that it is "yellow" and "cloudy") I do suppose she places that high on her priority list.

Having said that, I know that whatever stone I get for her, she will be thrilled as she is one easily satisfied, which makes buying something for her so nice. All the more though, I would get her something that she'd really want.

Argh... If I'd have it my way, I'd start working right away and get her a 1.5ca G SI1, then, i won't have to worry about colour or size and I won't even blink at the price....

Is this a promisse to upgrade ? Surely not too many would argue against this... It may be worth getting a G color frm some seller who offers a good upgrade policy, so you get a "sample" of what you want and a promisse to go with it. Does this make sense?

If she is particular about color and has made comments on other peoples 'yellow' stones...get her the G. She may love whatever you buy her but inside if she is that particular, she may wish that it was whiter. Double vote for G!

Esp if you plan to get her a bigger stone later if that is what she wants. The engagement ring stone IMO makes a great pendant later.

It is though a promise to get her a large 'anniversary ring' or something like that in future.

Yeah... two diamonds are always worse

than one!

The G looks like a good buy, considering what one notch higher in color does value.

Takig for example:

0.638 F SI1 symmtry-IDEAL polish-IDEAL H&A (HCA 1.5) $1,979.08 S246547

I'd vote for the bigger stone in the J, but that's probably because I already have a G.

A little more money for a bigger stone still looking very pretty as far as cut goes, yeah, the J.

Good luck with your choice, please keep us posted.

I have to vote the G stone here, too. If the J weren't quite so yellow looking, I'd pick that being the larger stone.

However, your GF is sensitive to color....and there is a notable amount of color, it seems, in the J.

She can always set this one as a pendant down the line when you get the anniversary stone!

If she has previously commented on color and has an eye for it, then the G seems best. Her focus on and ability to discern color is an important detail in the consideration.

Hi everyone....

I got the stone today!!!!!!!

After many weeks of reading and searching PS about getting the perfect stone for my gf, I finally took the plunge.

Last Friday, I decided to get the 0.664 G stone instead of the J so I wired the money to Linda on Saturday.

It was set on Monday and sent out on Tuesday. The stone was set in a 4 prong whitegold setting and Linda told me it was gorgeous. I couldn't wait.I could hardly contain my excitement. Since Tuesday I kept logging on the the fedex website and tracked the box... It was quite interesting really.... to think my little ring flew from NY to IN to Anchorage, Japan before coming down to Singapore... cool
1.gif

Anyway, instead of having the ring sent to my home, I opted to go down to the Fedex centre cos I didn't want my gf to see a Fedex box lying around the house and getting all suspicious etc...

As soon as I got the call from Fedex, I rushed down to the centre to pick the package up. I was so excited that I actually took the wrong turn. Can you believe it, (for those who know Singapore, I was supposed to go to the EXPO but becos I missed the exit, I ended up in Changi Airport.lol.. gee)
Anyway when I got the package, I ripped it open so quickly you wouldn't believe it. the countergirl was so shocked as well... lol... finally...

The ring was nicer that I thought it'll be. I thought that a 0.664 stone would appear real small but its not really... I can imagine it sitting perfectly on my gf's finger. It's really what Linda said it would be. Eye clean, faces up white, Really sparkly even in low light conditions. I'm really happy now that I've bought it.

The little blue box it came with was really nice as well.

To be honest, I was quite apprehensive about importing a diamond I haven't seen before, but Linda was great. She was really patient and accommodating. From this thread, you guys should know about my dilemma. Linda actually got photos of the 2 stones side by side without me even asking. Moreover, she really helped put my anxieties at ease by helping me decide and reassuring me about my choice. Her customer service is second to none I've even come across. I really recommend her to anyone (especially a novice) who wants to get a competitively priced, ideal cut H&A laser inscribed stone.

All in all, this was really a pleasant experience. I never thought that getting a diamond would be so "educational" and "fun".

Thanks also to everyone on PS (Mara, pqcollectibles, JEnnifer, valeria, tomatoe,Hest, Nicrez, giani etc etc etc sorry if i left anyone out) Thanks for all your input. It is greatly appreciated

Anyway here is a picture of the ring. (taken by Linda).

strange, I can't seem to upload the file... Will try later

Congrats on the ring, Teckie!!

On the pics,.... Check the file size. PS has a limit. Also check the file extension. PS only accepts certain file extensions. Finally, now that you've already tried to upload, you'll need to change the name. Once a name is entered into the PS system, the name is saved and PS won't accept the same name again.

Mark, congratz on going ahead with the purchase and finally receiving the ring.

We hope to see photos really soon and do let us in on the whole proposal story when you have the time to

Here's the ring.

Like Linda said, the picture don't do it justice. It's superb.... It's a great feeling to buy something nice for someone you love...

I agree. The yellow in the J was noticable to me also. . .

The diamond you purchased is GORGEOUS. Congratulations!

Michelle

It's a beautiful ring, and I'm sure will look great on your fiancee's finger! Congratulations!

Awesome! It's gorgeous! The only thing that could be prettier would be that ring on your beloved's finger!

Congratulations!! The ring is beautiful!!

I liked the G as well and it looks really darn white in that picture.

A person named "Linda" is mentioned in this post as an excellent saleperson who is knowledgable, I want to buy a diamon and contact her, can anyone tell me who she is and how to contact her? thanks

Hi Everyone,

Most of you would not remember me, though some may :) Thanks for all your advises back then.
Just an update, I have already proposed to my gf (having kept the ring for more than 6 months) and she said yes
36.gif
YEA!!! I spent 6 months getting the diamond and 6 months thinking of the proposal. A year well spent.

We are now in the midst of our plans to get married. We''ve gotten all the old folks approval and will be tying the knot next year in September.

Linda, if you are reading this (dun have ur email anymore), She said yes!!! Thanks for all your help and patience.

Good for you Teckie! I do remember you and your choice. I''m glad she likes the ring and you are now planning your wedding. I can''t believe that you held onto the ring for 6 months before proposing!

Sure.
The relatively small size and great cut should make these two (G and J notwithstanding) look as white as one may wish. Regardless of what those inclusions are, do you see them? If not, both stones are just as good, I would say
2.gif
I was wondering whether perfectly eye clean SI2 stone with black inclusions only visible under a ten power loupe is worth less than one with white or colorless inclusions. I cannot see the inclusions with the naked eye even though I know exactly where they are. My stone is large and I know it is hard to find a perfectly eye clean SI2 in this size but I was just curious to know whether the black inclusions make the stone less valuable.

For once, I do not know for sure the answer to this one. Perhaps make the Q into a separate thread ? This has surely been asked before, but old PS threads are great at hiding details

Here''s my 0.2 worth in the meantime.

Intuitively, the only reason why dark inclusions are considered worse is that they tend to show up more easily than colorless inclusions. So colored inclusions must be much smaller than transparent ones to keep the stone desirably eye clean. As far as I know, it is this "eye clean" quality that counts towards a diamond’s price and value, not the physical characteristics of its inclusions.

However, not just one shop advertises "we do not accept black inclusions" as some mark of quality. Tiffany does this on their website and there are followers. I strongly believe that this is simply marketing-the bit of info never appears in any other context I know of but self-promotion of stores'' quality standards!

It would take a professional to answer if among dealers eye clean SIs with dark inclusions are discounted. As far as I know, there are just not that many of these - the odd stone would need to have quite a few of these tiny, scattered black inclusions to qualify for being an eye celan SI. It doesn''t seem that too many diamonds get that lucky!
