In the process of buying a loose diamond online I requested a copy of the AGS certificate. When it was emailed to me, it contained no information about inclusions in the diamond. When I queried the seller, she replied that AGS certificates do not include this info. Can anyone confirm that this is correct? Is this a recent change?

If this is the case, can anyone suggest what to do to obtain this information? Should I get a professional appraisal?

I live in Melbourne, Australia. Any suggestions?

Follow this link to the AGS website: AGSlab.com

there you can get a full description of the various AGS reports available, not the description of DQA states the analysis without a plot in the description and image.

If it is truly important to you, as it was to me, I suggest going with a DQD or DQR reported diamond, unless your options are severely limited, in which case an appraisal should do the trick.

An AGS DQA (new since June this year) is not exactly the same as an AGS DQD.

The DQD contains the full information, including cut grade, and a plot of the inclusions.
The DQA is a cheaper version of the DQD (mostly used for smaller stones), and it is basically cheaper because of it not containing a plot. On the other hand, with the DQA, the stone automatically gets a laser-inscription of the AGS report number. Other than that, the DQA contains all the other info just like a DQD.

Ourselves, we will probably decide to use the DQA for all stones under 0.70 Cts.

Live long,

how much of a % discount are you talking about? I actually decided not to go with GIA in part because I could get the polot inclusion on the DQD with AGS (under 1 ct) and I personally think it is more than worth it just to aid in confidence and verification of the diamond you know? but thats just my opinion, and of course I dont know what that actual % decrease in price is yet....

Paul and WorkingHard thanks for your replies. Is it safe to assume that if a stone has a DQA, then that is the only report that AGS will have provided to the vendor? i.e. one stone would not have a DQA and DQD associated with it? I am looking at a stone 0.71 ct. Is it typical for AGS to only provide a DQA for a stone of this size?

I think that we are talking about different things here.

For cutting houses, choosing for a DQA instead of a DQD is slightly cheaper. But the stone does not change, and as far as I look at it, has the same value. And the reason why there is a plot, is because it is a matter of identification, which is replaced by the laser-inscription.

For us specifically, all stones under 0.70 Cts are basically a service. The fixed cost of the grading report and the Visagem-service with all the pics makes it impossible makes it impossible to turn a profit on these stones. However, it is important to cut them as a service to our dealers and our customers. Every cent that we can save by using a DQA instead of a DQD is welcome here.

Live long,

sorry for the missunderstanding, I meant the % decrease in the cost of the report for the sizes in question. I was wondering how much of a savings it really was to choose the DQA over the DQD, not in terms of the value of the diamond, but in terms of % decrease in report costs.

In my case a DQA would make a diamond worth less because I would have less desire to buy it, but theres no doubt that is not the case for everyone, so I hope they do sell just as well! And I didnt realize that it was so difficult to make profitt on the smaller diamonds

, especially since I thought that was about the Average size range? What would be the average size diamond thaty you sell?

Obviously if you are not turning profits on the size as it is then that youve got to do whats best for your buisness, but I for one would/will/did hunt down a diamond wth a plot inclusion over laser inscription anyday, just for piece of mind that I really got what I paid for. Which is not to put down a DQA at all, any AGS report is much much better than nothing of course!, but just one of my own priorities.
