Inclusion Question on SI2-I1 OEC

Hello PS Fam!

I’ve got just the prettiest 3 ct-ish OEC in my grubby little hands that has no cert. The estimate was SI2-I1 and around an L color. To my eye, I can see no inclusions but under a loop I’m pretty sure I see a feather near the girdle. I can’t see the feather when I flip the diamond over and I ran my nail along the girdle and it doesn’t catch with the exception that it’s super old so the girdle has the normal rough texture. I’m going to try my best to get a close up shot of it without going blind because that loop made me nauseous and seeing double :lol-2: Ok, had to use some pictures that I didn’t take because I cannot get a good shot on my phone!

The stone is super lively and has gorgeous facets, to me, but I’m no expert as you know.

Help a sister out, be kind, I’m sick - booooo!20250701_154950.jpeg

Yes this is a huge feather. I think it’s likely more than I1 given the size.

In the angle of the last it appears surface reaching and it reaches the girdle. I would be concerned about this for longevity. That chunk could shear right off with a hit I would suspect. I know we always say “it survived this long” etc but some diamond were in necklaces or diadems.

I would seek the opinion of a very knowledgeable jewler or appraiser, assuming it could be returned. The cut is lovely. If it’s safe to wear and the price was commensurate with the degree of inclusions, and you plan for a pendant, then I’d consider keeping it.

I looked at the side, too, and underneath and it’s definitely not reaching the surface or the girdle. I will definitely take it to a jeweler =)2

The price is under 9900 - do you think that would be fair? I really love this stone and would definitely pop it in a very secure setting regardless.

Hmmm. I’d be curious to see what the jeweler says bc in the images I can clearly see an indent where the feather reached the girdle. Girdle feathers are the one situation where there is concern.

Depends a bit on the color but another PSer just got a 3ct N VS2 for $14.5K and that was a good deal. So I think as long as the feather is safe then it’s a good price. I like the cut a lot.

Ah I see what you mean - I didn’t blow it up that far! I’m going to run it by a jeweler and have them look at it. I truly love the stone and I think if it’s structurally sound the price would be good. I haven’t seen many this size for under 10k and I love the cut, too!

It's a very pretty stone but I'd be worried about it in a ring. I think it could also be risky to set it so definitely make sure you go to a knowledgeable jeweler for advice.

We’re headed out of town so I will definitely take it in to a place or two soon! I was thinking of sending it to David Klass to ask his opinion as well.

I really, really want this stone to work though because it’s beyond beautiful, to me!

It’s so pretty and the price is good as long as it structurally sound. I would definitely see if you can send it to David Klass because he’s not going to want to set it if there’s something wrong with it because he could possibly break it in setting it you know what I mean???

I would trust David’s opinion. The cut is gorgeous. One of the stones in my five stone had an inclusion like that but as a half carat it’s a lot smaller!

How do you want to wear it?

This is SO pretty and such an incredible deal! Are you thinking pendant or ring? I’m crossing my fingers you get a thumbs up from your jeweler and DK should you decide to get his thoughts

I have no clue tbh! I had been considering a 3 stone after I saw one Andria Barbone posted but I think a 3 carat center would be too big for my hands. I really don’t want to overshadow my engagement ring on my left hand so I’m considering that as well. Plus I wasn’t expecting for sure to get this stone or love it so much so I was caught a little off guard. There was a really neat bezel/prong (I think) ring with enamel sides that is sooooo neat that I fell in love with…as you can see, I’m all over the place!

I agree! Yeah, David is the one who needs to see it - I’ve trusted him with 25+ projects and haven’t been disappointed!

I would already be setting this pretty amazing old stone in a bezel to protect the girdle. The feather doesn’t seem to go all the way across in the photos, so with the right setting would camouflage the inclusion.

Thank you - I mean if it’s sound, I would be over-the-moon!!! This stone performs in almost any lighting condition and I’m in love with the facets!!! I trust DK more than my local jeweler so I guess that settles it :D My heart says ring!

YESSS! This is so exciting! Keep is posted!

All fingers and toes crossed you get a green light! If not, you are going to have the most incredible “now everyone in PS is going to want one” pendant! So so happy for you!!

That might be the route to go! I would like to do a right hand ring - off to Pinterest and IG I go for inspiration :)

Either way a win!!! <3

HAHAHAHA

OK …..why don’t you just call me ostentatious to my face?!?!?

You have long fingers and I have little vienna sausage fingers! It’s all about the finger real estate ;)

For the folks at home…. She’s lying and has beautiful hands and gorgeous nails!!

Not today I don’t! The prednisone gave me little hobbit hands right now :D I wish I had long fingers like you <3

A true bezel might be risky bc it puts a lot of pressure. But a Colette or semi-bezel or faux bezel or tab prongs could work. Ask the expert!

Excellent suggestions! I didn’t realize that a true bezel puts a lot of pressure but now that I think about it, it makes sense. I’m a fan of all of those suggestions :)

DK can definitely do something like that for you. He's made a few similar rings, including one for me. I'd speak to him about how many prongs you may want. Perhaps fewer would put less stress on the stone during setting? Mine only has 4. the stones are M color as an FYI.

Maybe something like this? It has the 3 stone look I already wanted and the octagon halos would fit the aesthetic of my engagement ring. IMG_6868.jpeg

YES.

I personally don’t have concerns about that inclusion, as long as you treat it carefully when setting it in the setting.

I’d be keeping this stone at that price and putting it into a set-down pronged collet like the one here. (I might be using the wrong terminology).I love the cut! Love the color!

Can you link us to the original post for that three stone octagonal setting?

It’s a similar look to Dreamer’s original set-down collet for George, which is one of my favorite settings and diamonds of all time. The girdle and edges are protected by an elevated psuedo bezel. The tiny prongs hold the stone in place in the frame.

This is beautiful! Did you also have a feather near the girdle? This has turned out to be very educational because I never put much thought into the setting and the pressure it puts on the stone. Especially useful as I’ve become more enamored with older cuts.

Thank you for weighing in! I agree and I don’t know what that setting is called either LOL - I did think it checked all the boxes though, being somewhat recessed and protected. Thank you for linking Dreamer’s original post! I haven’t been on PS nearly as long so I haven’t seen this one.

I found this ring on someone’s Pinterest board - I searched for antique 3 stone diamond ring. I’m not sure if I’m allowed to link to Pinterest so I’ll post a screenshot. There are quite a few similar designs, same flavor at least.

I think your inspo three stone belongs to @yennyfire

Bezels are made by literally manually pressing the metal down over the edge of the diamond. Once set it’s fine, but the process of setting requires a lot of pressure. Colored gems get damaged all the time setting into bezels. Covering a large feather could pose an issue for a bezel. But maybe not! You have to talk to DK and decide how much risk you will accept. I would not bezel it or any other stone after a gem was cracked during bezel setting once.
