On a wide hand with very short fingers - ring finger only about 4.5" long and a size 4.75, would you say a 1.5 or 2 carat solitaire diamond in a tiffany knife edge setting is going to look to big and out of proportion to the hand?

I know we say diamonds can never be too big but remember this hand is more like a childs hand to look at. By the way it is my hand. Oh and I am just 5''2".

a 1.25 carat would be a very nice size!

to give perspective, on my picture, is .20, .30, 1.25, .30, .20 carats.

There are lots of things to consider here. Have you gone somewhere to try this size on? I personally think you have an advantage of having something you don''t have to get very large to have a lot of impact. You know that shrinkage does set in and sometimes people just grow into their rings. Some people like to get the larger rock now, if they are lucky enough to be able to do so, and use it in the proprosal, etc.-never having to worry about any future upgrades. It sounds like you may have fallen in love with a particular rock/ring?

I think different people will have different perceptions on how big you can go here, but I am also 5'' 2" with short fingers and I wear a size 5 ring. For me personally I would be comfortable with a 1.5 carat stone in that setting, but I think a 2.0 looks a bit large for my taste. I currently have a three stone ring with a 1.24 carat center stone and .5 carat sidestones and like the way it fits on my finger very much.

Thanks ladykemma and justjulia.

No this is not going to be my original engagement ring. I have been saving up for four years now for this one. I have in a way fallen for a knife edge solitaire mainly because I want a plain solitaire which is narrow so does not take up much finger space. There will be no future upgrades and I know all about the DSS.

It is mainly the length of the finger which is my problem, I am very happy with small finger size

. I have also wondered if since my hand is quite wide, maybe a princess cut would look better. It is the round brilliant I love best though.

I am thinking that as it will be a plain solitaire ring that I may order a silver cz ring from QVC or something in a larger size to see what it looks like.

If you are fond of round brilliants, then I think you should definitely stick with that. Fancy shapes come and go in style, and I see no reason for you to go with another shape because of your hand size.

Size of diamonds is so personal and partly depends on what those around you wear. I would not be comfortable at all with 2 cts. where I live and am not sure about 1.5. But I will say 1.5 would be the maximum I''d personally consider, and I''d put the money toward a high quality stone rather than larger. As to the CZ idea, just know that the weight of diamonds and CZ''s are not the same, so I''d recommend going and trying on real diamonds instead.

Thanks Sundial and diamondseeker2006.

Yes, I know that cz weighs heavier but on QVC over here they say ''this would be equivalent to a 1 carat diamond'' Only thing I notice though is that their measurement for a 1 carat is 6.25mm and not 6.5mm which we see quoted here for ideal cut diamonds

Just a little heads up... yrs back I ordered a 2ct cz solitaire from qvc to see what it would feel like. The metal head on the thing was ginormous and sat very high! lol Not very real looking, regardless what kind of rock was in there, so don''t let that scew your thinking. Later, I did own a real 2ct round, and then a princess 2.5, and they were pretty. Had a hard time wearing/mingling where I live though, so I exchanged. I agree with others who have said go try the real thing on. With short itty bitty fingers, have you considered a pear? I think they make fingers look longer. Any pear owners out there agree?

a pear would look lovely and lengthening. but i am biased.

Hiya Pyramid and good to see you back

I think for sure go for the round and also no I don't think those sizes would be too big. My friend Mini Mouse has small hands and her 1.5 firecracker looks perfect on her hand. I will find the thread for you to see the handshots. I can't remember what her ring size actually is, but here is the thread anyway.

Wow, I''ve been away from Pricescope for ages due to too much work in the office (and not wanting to see another computer by the time I reach home), but found a spare moment to take a look and the first thread I delve into is one in which Lorelei mentions my ring. Thanks so much Lorelei. Sorry that work has got in the way of so many friendships.

Am I missing something? A short ring finger at 4.5" long?
33.gif
I''ve just measured mine here in the office and it''s under 3". I must have a dwarf ring finger!!! That aside, my fingers are somewhat fatter at 5.25, but I''m also a little ''un at 5''2 and my hands are small. When I got my 1.6ct it felt ginormous, but I have to say, I could easily consider swapping it for a 2ct, you definitely get used to what you wear! We will upgrade to a larger stone, but we haven''t been back to the States long enough to harrass Lesley and John at Whiteflash (lucky for them). Still hoping to make a trip to Whiteflash some day and pick a bigger stone. but somewhat difficult whilst we''re in Saudi Arabia! It will happen!

I say go for the size you can afford today and if it''s something slightly larger than you immediately feel comfortable with, don''t worry, that diamond shrinkage doesn''t take long to sink in!

No worries Min - I have just emailed you

Hi! I always use Liz Taylor as an example - she is only 5'2", and she wears very large rings with no trouble.

Wonderful response Madam Bijoux, I''ll have to remind my husband of that!

Pyramid,

I ditto what Minimouse said...

i''m 5''1 and a ring size of 3.25 (I thought it was 3.5 but jewelers say that''d be too big for me) and mine is a 1.81 and it does NOT seem too big and my finger length is shorter than a Q-tip (I don''t have a ruler nearby so I had to get creative) which is supposedly 3" from what I read somewhere.

I have very child sized hands and I''ve tried on tons of diamonds in recent months in the range of 1carat-2.2carats and I will say that anything over a 1 carat looks great (not too small at all). HOWEVER, diamond shrinkage is a pain in the behind because I used to think 1.3 was my ideal until PS photos and trying on too many rings at dif. jewelers caused me to have shrinkage BEFORE I even got my own diamond. (Yeah the BF was THRILLED to hear that one, eh?)

Good thing the bf decided on his own to play it safe and aim for a 1.5+ esp. bc he does NOT believe in upgrades at all-- finds the notion to be unromantic.

A 2 carat would look huge but in a good way *wink*.

Thank you everyone for your replies HI again Lorelei

I had measured my ring finger and it is only 2.5" long, I think I mixed it up with the 4 in the ring size.

After seeing MiniMouse''s ring on her hand this thread has put my mind at ease, you hand Minimouse is very much the shape of mine although my fingers are thinner and it seems .5" shorter
39.gif

justjulia, good point about the qvc rings having very large prongs, I will need to remember that.

Regarding a pear I really prefer a round. My sister has a pear and set within a row of round diamonds around it, she has long fingers and when I tried her ring on the tip of the ring comes down over my knuchle and I do not ike that.

Dancing Fire your wife''s diamonds look fine on her finger too.

I think that justjulia has answered my question that a medium height ring will be okay but the higher set ones with that depth of stone may look too much on me.

diamondlove

yes you will know then what I mean about child sized hands

Madam Bijoux

That is very good, I never thought about Liz Taylor

but it is true.

Your ring finger is 4.5 inches long???
6.gif
That is a very, very, VERY long finger and does not sound at all "short or wide"!! Are you sure you measured correctly? I''m 5''2" and my ring finger is only 2.75 inches long, ring size 3.5 to 3.75.....if your fingers are short than mine must belong on a 5 year old!
3.gif

A 2-carat solitaire would look beautiful on you. There are lots of ladies here (including myself) who have less than model-like hands who can carry off larger stones just fine.

KirstyDarling

4.5" long was wishful thinking, I made a mistake when typing that, my finger is actually 2.5" and a finger tip long.

ditto. I am 5''3" wear a size 3.5 ring and my finger is just under 3 inches long as well. I don''t think 4.5 is a short finger at all. I also agree, a 2 carat would look great on you..

Oh and KirstyDarling your ring looks gi-normous, I remember looking at the thread you posted when you were showing it off and I just assumed you had long fingers. I think I have been mistaken about the finger length making a large difference although I have seen people with clusters and wide wedding bands on (in real life) and thought it made their finger look short.

Thanks MrsSalvo, it is great to see that many people with large stones have shorter fingers like myself. The 4.5" finger was my subconscious wish it seems, my finger is 2.5" long.

I finally found a ruler and my ring finger is 2.7" long so we''re quite close.

Yes and your diamond looks beautiful diamondlove.

DancingFire

I have just noticed one of your wife''s diamonds is over three carats and it looks great on her finger. I think she has more length between her hand and knuckle than I do though.

So you are in Saudi. My husband and I almost made the move last year..him wanting to go and me dragging my feet all the way. Your hubby must be in the oil business.Thank goodness he did not take the position and we are in the STATES.. Just too old to leave. Maybe if I were younger and did not have kids and grandkids. How long have you been there?
