Hello Everyone.
I've been lurking on this message board for several months now, but this is my first post. I've done alot of research and have a pretty good idea of what to look for in a diamond. Its time to buy my girlfriend of almost 3 years an engagement ring, but I'm afraid to pull the trigger.
I'm driving myself crazy looking at different diamondd from different vendors, and going back and forth on which aspects I'm willing to compromise on, but this is basically what I'm looking for:
.75-.9 cts
G-I
SI1-2
Very Good - Excellent Cut (Under 2.0 HCA) (I'm aware that a VG under 2 is uncommon, but a gentleman from B2C jewelers found me one)
I'm aware that depending of which end of those ranges I lean toward that I'm looking at a pretty significant difference in price (at least for my budget) but I'm really trying to keep the price of just the diamond under 3000.
I'm already a rather indecisive person, so a BIG decision like this is a struggle for someone like myself!
I was contacted by White Flash and B2C when I put in a request for a diamond on this site, but I've spent most of my time looking on James Allen because their videos give me the best idea of what I'm purchasing. I have also heard alot of great things about Brian Gavin, buf honestly I'm not sure what the difference is between them and White Flash.
I probably would have bought something from James Allen by now, but I keep reading how cut is the most important characteristic, and its hard to discern that quality on a computer screen!
My girlfriend says she prefers a whiter stone if it means compromising on the size, however I know that not all diamonds of the same color grade look the same. And since the diamonds I'm looking at are smaller, I don't know how much she'll even notice it when the ring is facing up. If I had my way I would get her a .85-.9 carat diamond, but I don't want to sacrifice on color if you guys don't think I can get away with it (I'm doing a platinum setting by the way).
I'm a very frugal person, so my goal is to get the most value for my purchase while also getting her a ring that she will adore! If that means buying a pre owned ring and getting the diamond reset, I am not opposed. I've looked on diamond bistro, i do now i dont as well as have you seen the ring, but I'm just not comfortable making a purchase based on the poorly taken photos and lack of a guarantee that other sites offer.
PHEW! That was alot, sorry. I'm sure you can tell that I'm (unnecessarily) driving myself nuts, but I wanted to come on here and ask for advice/wisdom/insight/opinions from folks who: A. Arent trying to sell me anything & B. Have more knowledge and experience buying/selecting diamonds than I do.
Some questions:
I know the spectrum of GIA excellent alone is very broad, but for someone like my girlfriend who is not a diamond snob, do you think the difference in brillianice between a well cut Very Good and Excellent cut diamond is worth the the extra money? I know that cut is king, but unless we have a better cut stone right next to her ring, as long as hers is brilliant and sparkly to some degree then what's the difference? I suppose my lack of knowledge of exactly what a Very Good cut looks like in person is keeping me from feeling comfortable buying online.
From what I have told you so far, is there a vendor that you think would be best suited for my needs?
Here are some recommendations I received from sales reps:
