sorry for the weird post - early in California!!

Bottom line - there seems to be a general consensus that if you can't tell if a stone is a J/K because of the cut, then who cares what the color is?

So I'm asking - if you can't really tell how perfect the cut is, isn't a gorgeous AGS1 just as nice (to the eye) than an ultra-mega-superduper AGS000? If you need an idealscope/firescope/ogi/sarin/etc etc to even tell, why bother?

maybe it was just reading the, ''i''m confused'' title of this thread that got me confused, but i am confused.

what is your question?

That is a good question. I have often thought I would rather have high colour and clarity and a high cut but maybe not ideal as opposed to low colour, high clarity and a super ideal cut.

I have not seen enough stones but if I saw the two scenarios in stone form in front of me I think I would go for the AGS1.

I hope to read more answers to this question.

It''s possible, but you may need to see both diamonds side-by-side in order to know for sure. In the end it all comes down to personal preference.....

Charcoal,

A lot''s been written here about this; I thought this particular post was particularly interesting.

Bottom line for me....rather than seeking to test driving lots of cars, in lots of different conditions, and not getting out of them for years before knowing how well it does over time...I would go to consumer reports to see what a lot of compiled data points to, and what critical factors will help me figure out which car to buy, because those elements most reliably point to it performing well. Likewise with criteria for a well cut stone; I''ll want to like it, but I''ll want it to have a certain level of pedigree to make the purchase decision.

The question of how much pedigree is a good one. You should stop changing your name, and let us get to know you.

Best,

I think if side by side you can''t tell the different than it doesn''t matter. That''s the simple answer.

For many people, though, who are not used to looking at diamonds it can all be overwhelming and they may be unsure about what they''re seeing. I always use the clothing analogy, but here it goes again: It''s like the first time you see what you think are two identical suits. Then an expert opens the more expensive one up and shows you the stitching, and has you run your hands down the fine wool, and inspect the lining, and the buttons. And suddenly you see why one is more expensive and the next time you''re confronted by a similar situation you can tell the difference in quality. Same thing with diamonds.

If you''re already well-educated and think you can tell the difference between a fine diamond and a mediocre one, then the ''scopes and reports come into play when you''re buying a diamond remotely. If you have the numbers and visuals you can be sure you''re buying a nice RB even before you see it.
