It's that time again. The time to stock up on brownie mix & speculate wildly while covering your ears & wincing from time to time.

IDOL's BACK TONIGHT.

Let's start the gossip. Sooooooo. People are saying that this year's crop of warblers is loaded up with semi-pros. Including this girl revealed to be the mysterious "Irish Girl" who Simon hyped after the 2005 auditions, but didn't qualify at the last minute due to visa issues. Will she be back? Is she the same Carly Hennessy (link) whose first major label album tanked horrifically five years ago? Who else is a "ringer"? Will the next American Idol be Irish?

And check out this video of a kid Star Search winner named David Archuleta singing for season one finalists Kelly Clarkson & Justin G. He's is also rumored to be in the Top 24 this season.

I'll admit. I've had a brownie mix in the pantry for months and I'm gonna make them when the program gets to the 24 finalists.

I know that the crappy singers in the elimination process gets high ratings but I am personally just over that part. It irritates me when people don't know they cannot sing and get all "Oh Simon wouldn't know talent if it..." and the costumes and the song choices and this year musical instruments? The twins, the mentally challenged, those that do something stupid just in case they show it over and over and over again ad nauseum in ads and reruns on television. So that they can brag they became famous for being that assclown who came dressed as a doctor with a light saber and sang a song about OBGYN Kenobi.

I'll see you at 24.

Perfect example. The addition of musical instruments will not always be used responsibly....

HA! I totally agree! It's just that there's this darn writer's strike going on ... reducing the TV landscape to American Gladiators and the twelfth edition of some girl named New York lap-dancing her way to tru luv. When Intervention and Guy's Big Bite have made it to the top of my TIVO ... tis pretty bleak.

Speaking of dubious painful singing: have you checked out DANCE WAR: BRUNO VS CARRIE ANN.

Just great. Now I''m thinking about making them before it''s time.

Oh, oh, oh! I''m so excited. It''s one of the few TV shows I actually watch. I don''t have any gossip for you, but thanks for sharing yours, deco! BTW, you''ve been missed!

I couldn''t wait. I already dipped into the butter pecan ice cream

I watched last year for the first time...not sure I will this year. Last year was pretty blah (but I had to watch it because we had a AI related product at work). But I''ll lurk on this thread for the brownies, and if it sounds it''s getting good, I may give Idol a run this year!

I have to watch! its one of the things my BF and I talked about when we started dating. He is a huge idol fan and we would critique performances, etc. IT was the year of Soul Patrol. So yes, I will watch!!!

I totally forgot this was tonight!

We have a new dual-tuner tivo so I won''t have to battle for the television this year.

That was hilarious!! A rant worthy of Dennis Miller! You had me laughing so hard I had a coughing fit. I''m in total agreement; I can''t sit through the auditions anymore.

I''ve decided that I really like the word *assclown*. It works on so many levels for so many reasons.

I really dislike reality shows, but this hooked my a couple of years ago, so yes I do watch it

i''m so on your boat! i''ll watch once it gets good.

In the process of watching it now..nice how they started out with a good audition...However I am having doubts about what ''sexy face'' is about to sound like. haha

i''ll be watching again this season and probably watch some of the audition stuff too just b/c of the writers strike and there is nothing else on.

Well, I just nipped in to start an IDOL thread myself. Glad it's already begun.

Hello. My name is Somethingshiny, and I'm addicted to American Idol.

Twenty minutes into season 7, and you begin to wonder at yourself. I've watched since the first episode of season 1. I usually wretch at reality TV, but I can't get enough of this show. I do get upset and offended over some of the things the "judges" say to the contestants, but I still enjoy giggling at the "Let My People Go" guy. And, I love hearing about the guy who lost 200 pounds and can sing! It amazes me that there are still so many people trying out at this point. Well, I guess what amazes me is the amount of people who get upset if they're told No. Like they've never seen the show...

Anyway, no speculation from me yet. But, I'm quite glad to see so many who will be willing to dish!!

One of the local radio stations in Atlanta listed the names of 4 contestants who made it to Hollywood this year from the ATL area. They played clips from their myspace music pages. It sounds to me like all of them already have agents and demos or even albums and such based on what was said in the report.

I''m in, again
38.gif
Every year I say I''m done and they pull me back in
3.gif

My friend was on tonight, yay! I wasn''t sure if they''d show her or not!

Congrats to your friend, Musey! How exciting!

I just finished watching it, and I was actually kind of disappointed. I think the commercialism of those just trying one gimmick or another to get on TV for a brief moment of fame is getting a bit out of hand.

I do, however, love the people with fantastic voices that they DO show, because it gives me hope for another fantastic season. I am of the Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood fan clubs, and I loved them both since I first saw each on their shows. I keep thinking I''ll get hooked by another one each season, so I am addicted to it, too...

Where ever will I find the time to get anything done between AI and PS??? Ughh...
14.gif

I'm addicted, I admit it! I'm back for another season
3.gif

I only got to watch the first hour last night because I just had to cart my butt to the gym!
That guy who sang so low.."Let my people go"..whoa. I love how he said, Ï'm here cuz my co-workers told me I should try out." Hmm..I think he should re-thing talking to those people.
11.gif

I feel so bad when the judges just sit there an laugh though, AKWARD!
23.gif

I find myself always thinking that most people are acting/faking the whole thing. Come in with a fake accent and a costume, just To get on tv.

emnote.gif
Anyhoo, I'll be tuning in again tonight!

i''m making shortbread cookies as we speak, and will be planted in front of the tv again tonite. I know its bad television. But the bad singing part is the only time my DH will watch reality tv. So we will be there watching all the idiots try to get on tv....and the occassionaly heartwrenching story. They said this year we will get to know the candidates better, so there will probably be alot more stories like the girl who was singing for her sick daughter (is it still the pg hormones, but that brought a tear to my eye!)

Deco - I''m totally in again. I''m watching the whole way through, but I really don''t like the beginning stuff. I just feel sooooo badly for the arguably mentally handicapped/mentally ill folks that kind of make fools of themselves.

HOWEVER, as soon as it is 24 semi-talented people willing to make fools of themselves...well, I''m in. I''m SOOO in.

Oh, and TG - do not judge AI by this past season. It was not so good. Taylor vs. Jordan. Feh. I hope this year is better...and we''ll have a new Sucky Bucky and MAce. Those were the halcyon days!

I''m not watching that...but I am more than ashamed to admit that I''m watching Celebrity Apprentice. Which I am completely blaming on the strike. So far, it is a pretty hideous show...but desperate times call for desperate measures.

Also, Deco, I love the new avatar!!!

NOOOOOOOO!

DH has been recording it but I *refuse* to watch it. I'm just saying "no" to Trump from now on. He super skeeves me. All his vicious immaturely personal attacks lately have made me lose any teensy bit of remaining respect I had for him. BEH-LECH.
14.gif

Can't wait for the gang to get back together at "24" ... c'mon guys ... maybe the auditions won't be SOOOOOOOO painful.
5.gif

I was watching AI tonight. I'll probably watch the auditions, then tune in and out until they get the boring qualifiers out of the way and get to the really good stuff. I like to watch this phase because I love to sing, and I can empathize with the contestants who sing for the joy of it and really, really think they can sing... but....

One of the most memorable radio stories I ever heard was about a group of people who got together every so often to sing together, even though not one of them could carry a tune. They wanted to sing, so by golly, they got together and did it! A lot of these early (mercifully, eliminated) AI hopefull seem to have that kind of enthusiasm, but without the reality check. I suspect that most of them still believe in their star quality after they've been eliminated, no matter what the judges had to say!

No snarkalicious recaps?

I''m still not going to watch until 24, but I wouldn''t mind hearing if there''s anything different from years past...

Nothing really snarky to say, I guess. There were the creepy sisters who were in love with Simon but mostly they are showing us the same bad singers we see every year with a few good ones mixed in. I start watching it 45 minutes after it starts and don''t put down the TiVo remote the whole time. I tend to fast forward through all the fluff and crappy singers just to hear the few good ones.

I am really looking forward to the top 24 - that is when we start hearing mostly decent voices and I don''t have to fast-forward so much.

I caved. I watched this week. We are finally down to the top 24.

I am actually pretty excited about this year''s prospects. Very talented group. Well diversified. I''m in!

i watched some last night too. I''m glad we are finally down to the top 24. Now''s when it''s starts getting good and when the real snarkiness shall begin...
