In an earlier thread, https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/appreciate-feedback-on-this-diamond-thanks.178518/,,,,, I asked for feedback on a particular ring I'd selected at a local vendor. I had also ordered an Idealscope and was awaiting it's arrival to take some photos of the diamond.

The idealscope has finally arrived and below is my feeble attempt at taking an Idealscope snapshot of the diamond (already mounted on a ring). The photo on the left is the sample CZ provided by Idealscope, and the image on the right is that of the diamond. I apologize for the poor quality of the photo. I don't know how else to get a clear and crisp image. Any help would be appreciated. And of course, feedback on the image itself.....is there any leakage under the table? Or is it a winner?

Looking forward to your replies! 8)

Nice shot! I think you did a great job. The IS image looks good. I can see a tiny bit of leakage in the middle (see the whitish ring?), but nothing that will be overly noticeable in real life. I think it's a pretty stone!

Thank you Laila for responding. I decided to have another go at photographing the diamond as I felt the previous photos were too dark to really gauge the IS image properly.

I took it outdoors today, and photographed it in the shade (on a sunny day). I used a different mode ('iA') on my p&s camera and it came out brighter than previously under the macro mode :appl:

Here are the photos (I couldn't decide which to post here so I made a collage. I'm sorry if it's taking up too much space  )

Do you see more white areas (light leakage?) in these photos (especially the last one on the bottom right).

I've asked the vendor to look around for other stones with the proportions favored by PSers here, but I'm still curious to know if this particular diamond is good enough. Would you buy it if you're the one making the purchase?

Thoughts anyone? Would especially love to hear from previous PSers who responded to my earlier post.... Christina, Yssie, and any expert out there on Pricescope.

Much thanks in advance! :wavey:

Can you please post all the measurements of the stone? These images are a little tough to assess. I am not seeing the white where it should be clearly, so it makes me also think that the leakage in the center may be worse than it looks in the pictures.

Is this it?

0.81ct/G/SI1(3EX)
Measurements: 6.00 - 6.05 x 3.67mm
Clarity: Feather
Fluorescence: None
Depth: 60.9%
Table: 59%
Crown Height: 14%
Crown Angle: 35.0 deg
Pavilion Depth: 43.5%
Pavilion Angle: 41 deg
Star Length: 55%
Lower Halves: 80%
Girdle: thin - medium 3% (faceted)

HCA: 2.8 (VG, VG, G, VG)

I'll tell you honestly that I think you can find a better GIA XXX than this one. I can handle a little leakage on the idealscope because sometimes it is totally invisible to the eye, but this one is showing a possible ring of leakage all the way around.

Yes, those are the measurements. Your point about not seeing the whites where they ought to be and therefore leakage in the centre may be worse than it is, has got me thinking.... makes absolutely good sense!

Also, are the photos showing light leakage around the girdle as well? Especially top left and middle photo, and bottom left photo.

Thank you DS for your response. Saw your post on the AVR. It's gorgeous!

There is definitely a ring of leakage in the middle of the stone. I'm not sure about the edges, hard to tell for sure. If you got a good deal and you really like the diamond, it may be worth keeping though. Does it look sparkly in person to you?

I agree that there is definitely leakage in the stone. I can't say how obvious it would be to a normal viewer IRL though. I guess this is how I feel about it, you are making a large investment and it's clear that you'd like to find the best performing diamond available. You are already paying a premium for the GIA ex ex ex, so I would want to know that I was getting the best possible ex ex ex out there. For me, knowing that the leakage was there now, would taint the stone for me, I would constantly be looking for it even if it wasn't immediately evident. And I would always wonder if I could have or should have kept looking. That takes a lot of enjoyment out of the purchasing and wearing of the stone. The fact that you took the time to find pricescope and research cut, ordered an idealscope and already have asked your jeweler to locate you other options for you, tells me that good enough isn't good enough for you, and I guess it wouldn't be for me either. :))

I think it would be a good idea to compare this stone to a few others with more ideal proportions and see what you think then. I also think that it's great that your jeweler is willing to do this for you and seems as interested in finding you a great performing stone. Unfortunately, this isn't always the case.

The asking price is $4000 for the stone alone. It does look sparkly when viewed under bright lights and is a very pretty stone in its own right. Its just that I feel that somehow it's not returning all the light (don't ask me how I know....gut feeling perhaps??) and that's why I ordered the Idealscope in the first place. And also why I came onto Pricescope for help.

Christina captured my sentiments exactly when she stated this:

May I ask a newbie question? Is it possible for a triple VG diamond to have more sparkle than a 3EX? Because I thought I saw one that out sparkled this stone when I viewed them both side by side, under jewelry store lighting.

Then you know what you should do...return and start over! We can help you find something great!

Thanks Laila, I believe I will do just that, start my search over. But the start over will have to be with the same jeweler from which I saw this ring. Long story short, I'd paid a deposit to reserve it and the policy is that the deposit is not refundable but can go towards the purchase of another stone or ring. I just hope they will be able to find one that meets the standards of pricescopers. And I want that because I know that they only accept the best! :D

Thanks for all your replies so far, Laila, Christina and Diamondseeker. You have all been of great help to a newbie like me. And reading the various topics in this forum has helped me acquire more knowledge. Hopefully this will hold me in good stead for the start over. And when I do see a potential stone, I do hope I will be able to call upon your help and expertise again.

Many thanks!
