I have just made the decision to go back home from school and most likely buy a ering and stone from Bachendorfs. The reasoning behind it is that my mom knows the right people in the right places can get me a 20% discount on the band, which I can''t pass up. I have some questions to prepare myself....

I know that the stone they showed me was a princess, 1.02, I, SI1. What else should I be aware of before purchasing this diamond?

They never told me the price but I know it is below $4000 which is whithin my price range...

What is the ideal depth and table for this size stone?

If I think of anymore questions I will post them. Feel free to give any good advice.

Thanks for all the help, I have been looking for awhile and am getting a little nervous knowing that I might finally buy one!

You can use this chart but don't get hung up on the numbers if you find a diamond you like which doesn't quite match, the numbers are best used as a guide.

When shopping check the diamond has a reliable grading report such as GIA or AGS, also it would help if you purchased an ASET scope so you can check out Princess for yourself.

Here is a page on how to interpret the results.

Thank you so much for the information I have been looking for something like that for awile! This will be very helpfull.

Do any jewlers provide you with an ASET scope or is that definately something I will need to buy?

Also, when I take it to get appraised will they look at it through the scope?

Thanks again

You are most welcome!

If you use this tool, https://www.pricescope.com/appr_list.aspx it can help you find an appraiser in your area. If you find one who is skilled at evaluating cut quality, then they might have an ASET or other tools available, sometimes it says what tools each appraiser uses near their credentials and services offered. But if you can, purchasing your own would allow you to evaluate diamonds on the spot, plus you would have it for any future purchases!

It might help to have a reference chart of what an AGS Ideal 0 princess cut diamond might look like when viewed through the various tools, so here is something you can print out and take with you as a basis for comparison. This is a single AGS Ideal 0 cut (ideal polish, symmetry, proportions, visual performance) diamond as seen through an ASET, Ideal Scope and the Pavilion and Crown Views as seen through a Gems Fantasy Scope (H&A scope) which the average retail jeweler is more likely to have on hand than an ASET or Ideal Scope (of course you can purchase your own and bring them). When viewing a fancy shape diamond through these devices, the thing to look for is consistency of pattern. Hope this helps!
