Sorry guys! I know there are a bunch of these out there, and believe me, I''ve scoped them all out.

1) I''ve noticed that some out there (specifically, I believe Yingh and possibly Charmypoo) asked to have claw prongs made; does anyone have an idea of the cost of asking them to make claw prongs? Or the cost to make double prongs?

2) My ring has small single cuts. I''ve read that larger melee on LOGR''s tends to be cleaner, and therefore it''s not quite necessary to upgrade. What about single cuts? I''ve read a Leon article that actually
recommends single cuts over full cuts...however, I''m assuming that refers to higher quality diamonds.
Ja? It would cost me about $70. $70 plus the cost of the ring=a lot for me...so what I''m really asking is, ''Is it necessary?'' Cause if it is, I will, but if I can get away with it otherwise, I won''t.

Thanks in advance!

congrats on winning a setting - do we get to see a pic?

As to your questions:

1) Claw prongs will depend on the skill of your jeweler setting the stone (price too). I did not get any claw prongs on my settings because I''m not confident that my jeweler can pull them off the way I like them. I think it''s also more difficult to get them all even. So this would be something you should discuss with the jeweler who''s setting your stone. Double prongs, if possible, would probably be an added customization - ask LOGR if it''s possible, and what their price would be.

2) I have not had any settings with single prongs, but I do know that LOGR does not have upgraded single cuts. You can upgrade the diamonds, but instead of single cuts, you would get full cuts. Sorry, I know this isn''t much help. I''m in the process of getting a ring with single cuts, so I wish I knew the answer.

Which setting did you win? Picture? I''m so happy for you, congratulations. Once you get one LOGR, it''s like eating potato chips, you can''t stop at one!! LOL!

Here it is!!

I got it for about...$140 less than the BIN price.

Which is a beautiful thing, but I''ve read that you''re more likely to get cloudy diamonds on a low auction than a BIN, which is what prompted me to ask.

Cellentani- That helps a lot! I hadn''t thought of it, but not that you mention it, everywhere I''ve read refers to upgrading to full cuts, rather than simply upgrading the single cuts to better single cuts. Which ring are you getting?

Thanks TL! Hehe, in that case, I think I''m starting to develop quite a potato chip habit!

Very pretty setting! Do you already have a stone for it? If you don''t want to ruin the surprise, you don''t have to say, but I''m always curious. Let us know what you decide about the diamonds. I have a pic somewhere of the setting that I''m getting, let me just find it.

Here''s the one I''m getting with single cuts. I''m having it made in 2-tone - 18k yellow gold basket/prongs and 18k white gold shank.

I''m not sure what I''ll set in it. I definitely know what you mean though, because as soon as I look at a setting, my natural reaction is to picture what I might put in it!

Right now, I have a 4.32mm emerald that might be able to fit, but it might also be too small. I''m not sure if anyone remembers, but I was recently looking for a diamond ring for my mom''s birthday; while I wanted to buy her a fancier ring, she chose one herself that was about $300 under budget! And when I asked her why (it was a cluster ring versus a solitare or a halo), she said there were a lot of hungry people in the world and that there was just not a point in wearing something so expensive.
14.gif
I couldn''t argue. She loves it and wears it 24/7, and tells all her friends that I bought it for her. Which is adorable; one of her friends said that her college aged daughter would probably buy her something from Ross (not that I don''t love Ross) and another started telling her 3-year old that mommy needs a ring for her birthday!

Long story short, seeing how much she loves the ring I gave her she has makes me wish I''d gotten her an even better one! My parents 25th anniversary is next December, so I might try to save up for a half carat diamond to put in that setting!

What do you think? Or do you think a colored stone might ''pop'' more? I would love to see a blue sapphire in it, but my mom is superstitious against blue sapphires for some reason. Rubies, though corundum, are fine as they are her birthstone.

Oooh I like it! Any idea what you''ll set in it?

Its ok if its a surprise, but I''m imagining a certain gem that might have come from a certain Jackson''s Crossroad? Or am I mistaken?

Haha, I''m still deciding how to set those amethysts - I''m thinking 6-prong for the star though, just to protect the points. Actually, I have an 8x10mm pink tourmaline from Barry that I would like to put in this one. I''m keeping my fingers crossed that it will work!

About your setting, I could picture almost any color of stone in there, including a diamond. I would wait until you see it first, because I was thinking that if the diamonds are just a little yellow, you might want to stay away from a color that would enhance that. I can''t wait to see your setting - it''s one of the newer ones.

About your single cuts question, there is a point where stones become too small to fully exhibit all their potential, so it''s best that they''re cut in the simplest of ways in those cases. For diamonds, some experts claim that that limit is 1.3 mm in diameter. Cause what you really get with 1 or less mm of a diamond is a dead white spot that''s as good of an accent as any other white stone of that size. THIS article explains it in more words, in case you''re interested.

And about the choice of stone, well, if you''ll give it to your mom (who sounds a lot like mine BTW) I''d think more about what she likes, what she''d want to wear, and not just what stone would fit in the setting. Honestly, that setting doesen''t strike me as something I''d envision more mature women to wear, but that''s just my personal preference that''s influenced by some perceptions - different people like different things of course. But if you think she''d like it, here''s what I''d go for. Is there any other color that she dislikes besides blue? In my opinion red wouldn''t be the best choice, cause I think that''s something a young woman would have set in that setting, as it''s got some fun, almost whimsical look to it. Maybe I''d be fine with a deeper shade of red, but it''s hard to find such stones in such small sizes, as you also want something that''ll have a certain depth of color (which is hard to achieve in small sizes). Maybe she''d like something green in it, not necessarily your emerald, but what about a nice tsavorite? Or if she likes neutral colors you could go with a cognac diamond? If you could find a nice example of a purple spinel (sort of like plum colored) it could be beautiful, and a round cut would also accentuate dispersion. Demantoids are another nice option, but difficult to find just right (and pricey). Some spessartites might also be nice, I''m thinking those orangy reds especially. Zircon also comes in some colors you might consider, like deep red or brown.

Well, now you have something to do

Lovely rings Szh07 and Cellentani. I can''t wait to see what they look like with the set stones!!

I prefer single cuts for smaller melees, I find full cuts to be too busy below a certain size and single cuts give off larger flashes. But in my very very limited experience with LOGR and what I''ve been reading here tells me that when it comes to them it''s not really an issue of single cuts vs. full cuts, but simply a quality issue. My first LOGR setting with single cuts came with rather gray and cloudy diamonds so it was returned, and I''m very happy with the upgraded setting with full cuts. I think LOGR single cut melees *tend* to be lower quality and lower clarity, but their quality can be inconsistent where many people here have received not to great upgraded settings as well and vice versa. I realized it''s bit of a gamble with them, but one very worth while

The good news is that return was hassle free and quick, and I was able to replace the first one with another I''m very happy with

I don''t know if this will help or not. I won both of the settings featured in these threads at auction for a low price. They both have single cuts. I didn''t upgrade the diamonds.

The diamonds perform very well BUT would have been phenomenal if upgraded. I''m super sensitive to dull/grey diamonds and honestly neither of these settings have those but they could have been a little better.

Congrats on winning a setting!!!! They (settings/gold) are so so expensive right now!

Ma Re, I certainly have a lot to do now! I do think you''re right, the ring has a ''younger'' feel to it, and I think that I might try to tone it down some. I really like the idea of a cognac or a yellow diamond. Tsavs are beautiful, but my mom isn''t very careful with her jewelery and I worry she might break it. Same goes for spessartite and demantoid garnets, though I think both would be beautiful in that setting.

I like the idea of a plum spinel as well. I think it sounds almost romantic; do you think a plum spinel should be set in yellow gold or white gold?

TL and Stonehunter- thank you!

Babyblue- thanks for your thoughts! That is exactly what the Leon article said about single cuts, but you''re right, with LOGR it seems to be an quality issue.

Lovingdiamonds, your rings are absolutely beautiful!! That sapphire is breathtaking. I think the diamonds look great without the upgrade.

Hmnnn...to upgrade or not to upgrade? I just asked them for a quote and it''ll be around $78...........

Depends on the tone and saturation of color - generally, I'd set deeper shades in yellow and lighter shades in white. But, if the color is rich and saturated, it can look nice in white even if it's darker, while yellow would make the color look richer if it would lack saturation (regardless of tone). Of course, it may be more appropriate to give your mom something set in white (seems more classic and elegant, but that's just me), but if she wears mostly yellow and the stone would end up looking too dark and "flat" if set in white (too strong of a contrast with the metal and lacking saturation), then yellow would be fine too. It all depends on the stone, but if you find one that's not too dark, that has some richness to it's color and shows dispersion, it'll look nice in whatever you set it.

Check out the one on the right HERE - looks nice and plumish to me (I know it's the wrong shape, just wanted to show you color).

Wow!! I really love that color. I am assuming that is the kind of a color would need yellow gold? It is such a rich color..I can''t believe I haven''t seen more gems in that color before. Its very unique without being off the wall. Excellent idea!

If the color is as rich as the photo would suggest, I think it might even work in white, but yellow would be safer. Glad you like the idea. This shade is somewhat similar to that of rhodolite, but they (rhodolites) rarely show real beauty in smaller sizes (tend to look blackish and flat), while spinels sometimes show depth of color, even when small (and their dispersion is a plus). They''re also not overly expensive.
