...or maybe I''m just being a spoiled brat. Or possibly both. None of my IRL friends would understand, but I know PSers wil...
I *had* a three stone plat e-ring--a 1.5 princess center, EGL, I, VS1, 6.48x6.33x4.52, with half moons totalling .65, H/I, SI2/I1. I lost one stone and the others were chipped/cracked, so got an insurance settlement and was left with an empty mounting. The center stone was set higher than the side stones, with V prongs, and it really stood out and looked large for its carat weight.
I decided I wanted to re-use my mounting, for sentimental purposes, and to save $$ as plat has gotten so pricey. I was afraid to get another princess cut; I was afraid it would suffer the same fate due to the sharp corners. I decided on a cushion cut center from a local jeweler. It was only a 1.27 ct, but its measurements (6.44x6.30) were almost identical to my old princess. It''s a GIA I, VVS2, 63% table, 67% depth but faces up very white (got an H in the jeweler''s Gran colorimeter). For side stones I went with .48 tcw half moons, H VS2 6.00x3.00.
The bench jeweler had a tough job--he had to basically remake my center prongs from the V tips to something that would fit a cushion. He also found the original jeweler had used some white gold solder when setting the original stone.
So I am certainly not faulting him.
It''s just that the center stone doesn''t look as large anymore. It looks more like a 3 stone anniv ring than an e-ring w/sidestones. He made the center prongs have sort of a triangular look from top down, which is okay, I guess. But he set the stone a bit lower in the prongs than my old stone. An the prongs seem to curve in ever so slightly, giving an illusion that the center stone is not as long as the side stones. He already told me he could do nothing else with this mounting; I would have to trade it in for a new one because it''s been worked on so much now, the original setting, the stone removal, and now the remount.
Is it possible I can detect the diff between 6.48x6.33 and 6.44x6.30? Is it all in my head because I know the new stone is .23 smaller in carat weight? Can a mm in setting height make that big a difference? Or do princesses just have a spreadier look than cushions? What should I do? I''ve only been wearing the ring occasionally, and scrutinize it constantly whenever I do. I don''t have a lot of $$ left to play with (I bought eternity bands from Signed Pieces with my "leftover" money--bad girl!) but I suppose could use a little of my tax refund to do something. What would it cost to remake a mount, do you think?
