I think I found a pair of OECs!

I think this photo is a good lesson about OECs, don't judge too harshly based on macro photos. The table size, diameter, and crown height, seem to have the biggest impact on perceived similarity in person.

Love your stones! They look like a great earring or side stone pair! The sentence above is so very true, particularly in sizes under 1ct. With earrings, you have a little more wiggle room on the similarity factor because, well, there's a smiling face separating the stones :) For ring side stones, because they're closer together and seen simultaneously, they need to be a closer match, but subtle differences in faceting will not be noticeable. Things like face up size, table size, culet size and, for a ring, crown height, are the key things you see.

It's remarkable that you found 3 stones individually that work so well together. Grace and I have been trying to put together some OEC pairs and 3-stone suites and it's not easy! I personally just acquired a 1.20ctw pair for myself (bezel studs, I've never been an earring person and they look HUGE to me, lol!), but I cheated and bought a twin stone ring that already had extremely well matched stones, so I got lucky. I've also been trying to find a pair of 20 pointers to make birthday earrings for my daughter and I've had a heck of a time. I finally took some little side stones out of an inexpensive ring and they are a decent match, though one has a visible culet and the other doesn't, and it's driving me a tad bonkers, lol.

Hi Erica :wavey: Oh, I would have cheated too if I could have. I looked at twin rings but they were all priced higher than I wanted to pay and in the hands of dealers already. But it's a good "shortcut"! When I was looking there were so many stones in the 5mm to 6mm range available, it seems to be the most common/prolific size on ebay and rubylane, anyways. I sort of thought if I had an unlimited budget and could buy them all, I would have ended up with a few matched pairs. But I had to be a little more discriminating. The pair in this thread were not actually bought to match each other! I bought the 0.65 to match a 5.2mm stone I just sold, and bought the 0.70ct stone for another purpose entirely. It was pure unintentional luck that they matched each other.

When I was looking for a matched pair of 4mm stones it was much more challenging. I wonder if you know, are stones that size less common, or at least, less common in well cut makes? Because my lay impression is that it would be hard to cut such small stones with the methods available to cutters 100+ years ago, at leats difficult to cut them well. Anyways, I ended up buying a matched pair from a dealer after two failed attempts to find 4mm stones that were well cut and the size the vendor's advertized

... and returning the quarter carat OECs (or passing them along to another PSer if someone wants them, knowing matches pairs are hard to find)

Ooh! I might be interested! Please let me know if/when you're ready to sell them! :naughty:

Me too! I just bought a ring that I'm hoping I can dismantle to make into a 3-stone, and I'd LOVE to have that setting! I think I'll be going with some milgrained bezels, but oh, that setting would run a *very* close 2nd to my choice!

I'm just waiting for the ring to arrive -- as soon as I have it, I'll start a thread. Learned my lesson with my last purchase -- started a thread and then decided to return that ring -- so I'm waiting until I've actually *seen* this one before I tempt fate!

Update:

I decided while I make up my mind I would set the twins into earrings. I am wearing them now and they are SPECTACULAR! I will post photos post-haste!
