Hello! I have been lurking and learning about RB from the forum. I already purchased the setting and have been searching for a loose diamond. I''ve been looking in my area at small non chain jewelry stores. I like to see the diamond in person. Can you give me your opinions on these two diamonds? They are both GIA inspected.

I really like #1 but I was trying to stay within $1500-$1900. I don''t know what it is about #2, but it didn''t have as much fire. Help! Thank you!

Hmm

Have you looked at the stones yourself? And outside of store lighting?

Because #2 scored better on the HCA, 1.7 while one is bad, 5.9.

You should really go for 2. Although the girdle should hide some weight, the overall optical effect of #2 will be much better than #1.

I was confused. I realized afterwards that #2 scored better on the HCA. Do you think it is priced accurately?

Woops! Yes, I looked at the stones myself. I will have to go back and look at #2 outside. I appreciate your answer.

#2 is priced a little higher than online price which is expected from a B&M store. JA has a stone for around 1.6k.

A deep stone, #1 is one of them, basically lets light out the pavilion of the stone making it less bright, a window. It also means the light can also come in from the pavilion, which could account for it performance in store lighting. Bring them to some place without strong direct light, under overcast sky or trees or similar lighting condition, and compare them side by side, you should see a difference in performance.

Thank you! That does explain why it seemed to have more fire. Now my concern is price. I found another jeweler who plans to look in the $1500-1900 range for a .50 carat for me. Would you say, I can get a good cut for about $1600? Is that the most I should pay?

Probably in the 1800 range for a B&M for the same stats.

You can use the search by cut tool above to find the prices of similar, with the second diamond you will only see fire if the lighting is right so check it out in non direct sunlight if possible and other lighting to judge the fire aspect. Jewellery stores are not a good place to properly judge a diamond for desirable visual properties, so with the first stone as you say you like it, make sure you check it out in daylight to see how it looks...Then you will have a much better idea.

The pavilion angle of the first diamond is too steep to provide good performance. Try to keep this between 40.6 / 41 degrees with a harmonizing crown angle, you can use the HCA to see which are a good fit with each diamond.

Brick and mortar prices will vary, so shop around to find the best deal. If you wanted to buy online one of these might fit the bill.

Thanks Lorelei! Now I know I can keep my budget at about $1600 and get a good cut .55. I am leaning towards buying from JA. With their return policy, I think this would work better than a B&M.

Thanks everyone! I feel more confident making a decision now.

You are most welcome, I am very glad to have been of help to you! Buying online can be very straightforward from the trusted vendors here such as JA, so no worries! I would say though this time of year for purchase info or to reserve one of the diamonds I linked, telephone them rather than email.

buyingtwoerings,

You no need to buy stones with 6 points difference it''s too much. For 50 points VS2, color F, round brilliant cut you must pay not more than 1600 USD. But the price between 0.40 - 0.49 is different. Try to find stones with size 0.47-0.49 points. For 48 points stone you must pay not more than:

ROUND BRILLIANT CUT:

0.48 VS1 color F - 1300 USD
0.48 VS1 color G - 1170 USD
0.48 VS1 color H - 1040 USD
0.48 VS2 color F - 1120 USD
0.48 VS2 color G - 1040 USD
0.48 VS2 color H - 950 USD
