Gypsy beat me to it but I would say first step is to spend alot of time in high end jewlery stores. Firstly because that''s the very best way to know what you like on your hand and what you don''t, shape, size, clarity and colour wise, the internet is more helpful in insration after this. Secondly, it would be totally fricken awsum to spend a whole day darting from jewlery store to jewlery store, playing with and drooling over sparklies. Even if you learn NOTHING it would still be lots of fun!

I look forward to seeing the final result.

After I posted I went to the HW site and looked around. They''re selling a marquise with a cutlet. Maybe that.

For that budget I'd check out the beautiful rings by leon mege, they are incredible. Here's one that is for sale, but he could make you anything: http://www.artofplatinum.com/4images/details.php?image_id=329. You could get a stone through him, goodoldgold, whiteflash, etc.
That amazing ring from Leon is $32k.

What you need to do is go see and try on the different cuts and settings. Its all well and good ogling the sparklies on here but its about what you suit, what feels comfortable, what speaks to you. Do you prefer the bold bright flashes and structure of an EC or the sparkly shine of a Radiant? You'll not know til you try. Do you want a bigger stone therefore a solitaire or do you want coverage and multi-stone................or..........go for an eternity style wedding ring to go with your solitaire or a plain band with your multi-stone.

You have so many options available to you and in this economic climate, you 'should' be able to negotiate (Leon being the exception to the rule). Either way, what a wonderful time you'll have and I'm so excited to see the end result.

*jedi mindtrick...........I will buy a ginormous emerald cut solitaire, ooooh yes i will*

I''m the oddball but I would look for a big gorgeous round and find a gorgeous delicate setting for it

Same here, either a big beautiful round with pave on the shank, or a nice big emerald with baguettes

Yeah...I second that motion!!! I LOVE this ring...in fact, I''ve been looking for it ever since I saw it on PS a few years back, and have never been able to find it! Thanks, Ellen!

Ooohdiamonds...you are one lucky lady!
Ha! How about that, you''re welcome.

Buy insurance -- before you put that baby on your finger!

And go try EVERYTHING on in stores before you decide. Certain cuts look better on certain hands, and with your budget, you can certainly do it up right! Have fun!

I ditto the motion of a nice emerald with traps. I swoon over that setting every time I see it. With a budget your size, you''ll be able to get nice stones and have major finger blingage! Keep us informed!

This is my current favorite ring. But you''d definitely need to love the "halo" look.

Hello ooohdiamonds

,

I am surprised you have such few posts and have such a large budget.

How come we do not get any more information?

I'm with MMT! I'm a sucker for round brilliants set in an elegant way.
That being said, the ring that Ellen posted is to die for! This is definitely a tough decision... that I'd love to make :D

coz im a newbie to all of this!!! hahaha

we decided to mutally pay for the ring, which is why my budget is a little bigger!!!

Now don''t forget to come back and show off some photos of your fab new ring

I want to emphasize that what looks good in photos may not look good on YOUR hand. So it is very important to try on many many diamond shapes and ring styles. Three stones look good on others, but not on me.

mutally, you mean "mutually."

So you're both putting in up to 20k.

I still think you should tell us more about what you like. You're thinking of spending 40k and you don't have any ideas other than some shapes? Size? Color? Setting? It would be fun to know!!!!!!!!!!

Was that really necessary? You obviously knew what she meant, as did the rest of us. Sometimes keys stick, sometimes people just miss a letter, and sometimes, they do mispell. Pointing that out is rude.

I would get a radiant with small trilliants/traps, an ec with traps and have you thought about ovals? I don''t know your hand size, but personally I think a halo around a 3ct+ ring that is diamond encrusted all over the place is a bit...tacky. I know I''m going to get blasted for this, but I just think it''s "too much". Have fun shopping!!

Look at the tone of the whole post, it was said in jest . Cant you see that Dan was bending backwards trying to be helpful and to really put himself out to help and serve the OP.

But while we are at it, I will confess that my nails cause me to misspell all the time. Thats my excuse and Im sticking to it!!!!

Tacky??? Blimey charlie, EL1''s ring is one of the most gorgeous rings on here and hardly tacky.

Tacky and too much .....until its actually on the hand. Then its freaking amazing and not coming off if the world ends!!!!
2.gif

Seriously, EL1, even though I know what Scorpion was meaning....she did not mean your beautiful elegant ring. Your ring is so subtle and delicate it is not at all in the category of tacky.

I have seen some too over the top fancy rings with what does look like diamonds stuck in every nook and cranny. And the word `encrusted` springs to my mind and for some reason I think that word is nastey!!!!!! I sometimes cringe when every part of the prong work is `encrusted`!!!!!

Ditto. If I take your meaning that you were referring to EL1's ring directly, it is not good form to refer to a members ring or other piece of jewellery in such terms.

Thanks ladies that commented and I know my ring is not tacky. Threads like this are strange because the OP posted my ring in the other thread cause she liked it. So saying that rings like mine are tacky kind of hits home, you know? Not that it matters cause I'm the one that has to look at it everyday.

Anyway...everyone has their own opinion and I personally believe that you can halo anything! Proportions have a lot to do with it in my opinion. I just hope ooohdiamonds gets a very large sparkly ring with some help of the awesome posters here.

ETA...and to Scorpio...I really did not take offense but I posted because I would be carefull of how you say things. Maybe I gave you what you wanted by responding to something you knew would get someone riled up. I remember a thread a few years ago on "cocktail rings" and I wouldn't want to see this go down that route.

I think he''s referring to those super thick halos, and I would agree on that - as it''ll take away the beauty of the center stone. I don''t think he''s seen your ring - the most beautifully done subtle halo on an EC.

Take your time & try different shapes to see what look you like. For the most sparkles, get the biggest & best cut round. If you like square/rectangular shapes but still want some bling, get a radiant or princess or cushion. If you like elegant & clean look, emerald or asscher. Just be careful with asscher, cause 40K doesn''t buy much diamond in asscher - they look the smallest... I never researched on other shapes, but pear, marquise, heart could also be options. Have fun shopping!!!!!!!!!!

In picture below: L-R top to bottom:
3.22ct Radiant, 2.97ct Cushion, 3.07ct Radiant
3.03ct Asscher, 3.02ct Cushion,2.76ct Round
See how different the looks are...

These are all solitaires. If you want halo, do subtle halos like EM1''s.

I think it would be in everyone''s best interest not to refer to ANY style of ring as tacky. Maybe we should all just keep it to ourselves

Agreed. One should always use caution when posting personal viewpoints, because with so many different posters/styles on this board, its likely to hit home with someone.
