Wow, both watches are gorgeous. I love the round on your wrist. Gosh, I never thought it would be so hard!!! Wow, which ever you chose will be lovely. Congrats on such a lovely treasure!

I Love Nanna''s!! I prefer the thicker band and the square face. I''s gorgeous!

I vote for the Elgin watch. I inherited a rose gold Elgin ladies pocket watch from my great-aunt, and it is an amazing piece. My mother has her mother''s watch (the two ladies were sisters), another Elgin with a slightly different pattern on the case.

So, I have a soft spot for the Elgin. Besides, that wristwatch is very, very beautiful.

What a tough decision! I like them both, but I''m leaning toward Aunt Jo''s. I like the round face on your wrist, along with the thinner band.

What wonderful legacy! I don''t think I could decide between the two if I had the choice-they''re both beautiful and unique! I also think it''s so neat that you have photos of these special woman.

I love them both!

I prefer Nanny''s, but you can''t go wrong with either one.

I would chose nannys but thats just me...it seems the shape and the other band is not my taste...but they are both great.

ellen, does your sister have a preference?

vivian, what an interesting way of looking at it. I think you might be right.

wolftress, yes, that picture of AJ really does define the times, and reflects what a real lady looked like. I just love it.

ds, I agree, AJ''s does look older, I''m betting it is. And I agree with you, I think it goes better with my ring.

I think nan''s might "go" with more in the way of everday clothing, but I just keep being drawn to AJ''s.....

Skippers, thanks. I think the round looks better too.

Spld, I like nan''s band better too. That''s really the only thing I don''t care for on AJ''s watch....I wonder if it would be more appealing once it''s cleaned up....

Fly Girl, lucky you!! to have TWO sentimental watches. Frankly, I think I should get both of these, since my sister''s getting so much other stuff.

Dee, yep, AJ''s looks better on me.

SKitty, yes, I love my photos too. They are very dear to me. Seriously, if I had to pick between the jewelry or them, the photos would win!

Anastasia and Alexis, thanks!

Surfgirl, I''m not even sure my sister remembers these watches. Of course, being the bigger jewelry hound, it''s possible....She was just in town, and I suggested to mom that she let her have her stuff now, but to make a long story short, she didn''t want to. I have considered my sisters taste, and what she might like. I can''t decide, but maybe nan''s would be her pick. She definitely has bigger wrists than me, so I think she might carry that one better.

Thanks for all your opinions and comments!! This has been fun.

I call BLASPHEMY!!!!! Ellen, my dear friend, how on earth could your SISTER be more of a jewelry hound than YOU? I am simply flabbergasted. Flabbergasted I tell ya! Seriously, I think since you are drawn to both for different reasons, you should take them both to a fine watch repair shop and see what they say about the value and the restoration costs involved with each watch. The information you glean there might help you make your decision. I agree that you Nan''s watch would probably get more wear and looks hardier, but the roundness of Aunt Jo''s watch would look lovely with your OEC ring. Ah, if only all our decisions were like this one! You''re in the Chicago area right? I''d call GP - or call Tourneau in NYC and speak with their repair manager, and ask if they do this sort of thing and if there''s a Tourneau in Chicago (there must be!) you could take them in to look at them. They might have to send them to NYC to be looked at but it''s worth a try.

Alternatively, if you would like a really knowledgeable horological perspective on both watches, I''d go to www.timezone.com and post there and see what the experts say (I believe they have forums for GP but you could post both there or under the general discussion thread). That''s like PS but for high end watches. They could help find you a fine local repair shop too.

lol Surely you jest, I''m far from a real hound.

Actually, I''m way south of Chicago, the closest big city is St. Louis.

Thanks for the link, I''ll check it out, and do some searching on good watch people.

I would go with the Girard P. But you can''t go wrong with either one.

Madam, I''m curious. Did you pick that one for the brand name, the look, or because it''s simply in better shape? Or, all of the above?
9.gif

Hi Ellen! I picked it strictly for the look (but the brand name doesn't hurt either).
2.gif
Which one of them do you like better with your other jewelry?

Thanks for elaborating!

Honestly, my grandmothers would go better with my stuff (I think only because it has a more generic look), but I really am drawn to my aunts....It's much more "me".

I am late to this El, but 4WIW, I would choose Nanny''s watch! Although they are both lovely!

I am bit late to catch up,
but I just wanted to say that
how beautiful your nunny and great aunt.
I love your nunny''s watch too

I think square is more icy cool look .

Oh, Ellen, what a great dilemma! Both watches are lovely and you''re fortunate to have such beautiful watches from which to choose. I think someone needs to keep Aunt Jo''s memory alive. If your grandmother had daughters and granddaughters there will be many to remember her. If Aunt Jo died young without children, then there would be fewer to remember her. Will your sister safeguard Aunt Jo''s memory as well as you? If the answer is no, then you must keep the watch and share her with your daughter or granddaughter so the chain remains unbroken.

Just my two cents.

Nancy

How did I miss this thread??? Oh Ellen, what a fabulous delema to be in! I love both watches and am mesmerized by the photos but to me personally there is no choice to be made, it would be your nanny''s hands down. Not because of the brand but just because of the look of the watch and how it looks on your wrist. It is amazing! Also, it is your Nanny''s and even though Aunt Jo is also related..........it is your Nanny''s...... if that makes any sense. You are so, so, so lucky to have these keepsakes and photos. I am a devoted genealogist and I would kill for just one of these items. SO, which one did you pick?

Aw, thanks gals, I appreciate your posts! Nanny must be beaming with all the votes her watch got.

Nancy, funny you mentioned in your post about who will take better care, plus if AJ didn''t have any kids, which she didn''t.

And no, to be honest, I can''t say my sister would safegaurd her memory like I would....Good point.

Michelle, I know what you''re saying about it being my Nanny''s. The thing is, I have so many things of hers, not all jewery, but still.

The fact of the matter is, I still haven''t decided. And I''m still drawn more to AJ''s. I think I''m just going to put them back in the safety deposit box and think on it some more. This is tough....I really wish I could have them both.

I can''t believe I missed this thread until you bumped it today!!!

What beautiful women in your family - that picture of your AJ is so mysterious - I love it!!!

Both watches are gorgeous, but I am particularly drawn to your nanny''s. Something about the design around the face with the marquise shaped areas and such. What a decision to make!!

Ellen, What a difficult decision to have to make. I do not envy you for needing to decide on one of these two watches that are linked to such interesting ladies.

I will add my initial impressions - Aunt Jo looks like a very interesting woman. Someone I would certainly be interested in knowing more about. She looks stylish, smart, and a bit mischievous as well, like she knew how to have fun! For that reason I am drawn to her piece, as I''m sure if it could talk it would have a lot of fun stories to tell!!

Your Nanny''s ring is gorgeous!! Being that you knew your Nanny, it might be that her ring has more personal memories associated with it, where Aunt Jo''s watch is more of the possibility of memories and stories that you have been told.

I''m such a terribly sentimental person, I would really have a difficult time deciding. I think I would likely choose Aunt Jo''s for the simple fact that I do not have "personal" memories, only the memories of others, but that the watch itself looks to be able to tell stories about her, assumed, interesting life.

They are both so pretty! Lucky lady! I was going to say i prefer teh square, but after seeing it on your wrist, I thinkt he round one suits you best.

Good luck, you can''t go wrong!

Gosh, how exciting!!!! The photos are amazing!!

Follow your heart Ellen, what is it telling you?

To pick Aunt Jo''s.

Which I probably will do, but I really am going to put them away for now and think on it a bit more.

Jypsie, yes, AJ does look like she''d be a bit mischevious, my kinda gal.
9.gif
And I have thought of the fact that I have all the memories of nanny, and so many tangible things of hers, and, nothing of Aunt Jo....except this picture really.

Skippy, I really DO think I should get them both. My sister gets ALL the other jewelry pieces (several), you guys would go nuts over some, if not all of them.

Thanks for all the comments ladies!

Ellen,

I hate to pry, but I can''t seem to resist. Why does your sister get everything? My sister gets everything, too! And. . . her name is ELLEN!!!

Well, that''s a good question Nancy. I can''t say for sure what the exact reason is. She''s always gotten "more". She older, and the "favorite" of us two girls. I also think my mom''s giving her more jewelry because she feels sorry for her. Not married, nor will she ever be, no kids, etc.....

I dunno. *shrugs*
