I Feel Sick - Lost 2 Stones

Yeah, it could have been a LOT worse. I know I''d be obsessing about it too...

Just keep the loupe locked up.. June will get here quick, don''t worry.

October, I''m so sorry to hear about the whole ordeal. I think it was very unprofessional for them to replace the two stones, even if it''s tiny pave stones. Even tiny tiny stones have a difference in quality and value, not to mention sentimental value. I would be so upset if that happened to me! Hopefully your original setter will be able to fix it and make things right again.

When I had my morganite ring set--the jeweler handed it to me, and lo and behold a pave stone was missing. I handed it right back and showed it to her. She laughed and said, ''You Asians are so picky.'' (I''m half Asian) Suffice it to say, I''ll never go back to that jeweler again.

I don''t like it when jewelers are rude/blase/jerky/insensitive when they damage your stuff--accidents or not.
um, WTF?!!!!!!!! How dare they quip something like that on a brand spanking new ring?

Did she just think that they could make a sub-par ring and sell it off to you? It doesn''t matter if I happen to be a green alien, you shouldn''t have had to put up with that for a job they didn''t deliver on. Grrrrrr!!!

Oh October! I'm so sorry to hear about your return to the jeweler. I would be upset.

Like the others have said, June will be here soon--though it probably doesn't feel like that now.
Bummed for you--I know they'll fix your ring-good as new--in New York

I appreciate your incredulity Onvacation!
It was the most rude experience I'd had with a jeweler. She also looked at my 3 stone oval I was wearing and asked the stats, G VS1. And said, "You Asians usually go for quality over size." (most snarkily-and looking at me like I was metally retarded to make that decision!) Huh? G is certainly not the whitest color you can get. And my 1.5 carat has good spread

well, I thought... --AND most importantly, what up with the racial commentary??

Sorry about that threadjack October, it just stirred up some...memories.
Again, So sorry about your experience!

Ohh October I''m so sorry. I can just imagine how upsetting it is. I''m sure everything will work out in NYC.
Side note..I think your ring is beautiful!

Oh I am sooo sorry that happened to you! I would definately give them the bill, and honestly family jeweler or not, the workmanship is poor and I wouldn''t go back or buy FI ring there either! The fact you told them you weren''t happy and wanted your ring back is a good thing! That would make me so mad and upset. Not just because of the lost stones, but the fact that she was so rude. Why couldn''t she get your stones out of the ultrasound for you I don''t get it? Afterall she was the one insisting on putting them in there. As a PSer your diamonds are probably much nicer in cut/quality/etc than what she replaced it with. Maybe it does "happen" but in this case they would have been recoverable, so why wouldn''t they? Do they not want your future business? It was in their care when they did it, and then they expect you to just be okay with it? I think that is very poor customer service. The place I go they are 100% devoted to making me happy and don''t poo-poo anything I want fixed or done. They have a customer for life.

As a sidenote: I don''t really understand the whole not being able to put pave in the ultrasound, is the vibrations that much stronger than daily wear?

I would be way to clutzy to wear pave (although I think it is super pretty)

October Bride,

Don''t feel bad, it happens to all of us... Those of us in the jewelry business and our customers. Would it make you feel better to know that my fiancé Valerie has made a habit out of knocking at least one of the small diamonds out of her wedding band every few months? By the way, if you''re confused by fiancé and wedding band, don''t be, Valerie wears her wedding band every day even though we''re not married because she likes the look of both rings better than the engagement ring alone (it confuses the heck out of my Mom). Valerie knows that she''s not supposed to clean the wedding band in the ultra sonic, but she does... And every few months one of the diamonds falls out and she says "I knew that was going to happen!" and off the ring goes to D. Vatche to be fixed... It comes back a few days later and I hand it back to her and say something like "you know there are easier ways of getting your rings polished, right?"

Bad things happen to good jewelry... Seriously. To the extent that I''ve joked about adding a new feature section to the new web site titled something like "the destruction of Valerie''s jewelry" with before and after pictures of each incident so people will not feel as bad when unfortunate things happen to their jewelry.

On a bright note, isn''t it great that your ring was in an ultra sonic when the two diamonds popped out? They can be recovered rather easily, we use a wire mesh strainer to filter out any little diamonds which might have fallen out of jewelry while it was being cleaned EVERY time we drain the sonic. At least you don''t have to feel bad because the diamonds fell out do to something you might have done to the ring... It''s nothing that you did, no worries

That was my point! Why didn''t the jeweler use hers?

OctoberBride, your ring is beautiful and looks well made. It may happen again with the pave, but I hope wherever you go to fix it they treat you with more respect (I hope it doesn''t happen again though, because it still sucks to be without it while they are fixing it).

I didn''t catch that the jeweler didn''t use hers... That makes no sense at all, unless they''re not in the sonic. Sometimes diamonds get loosened in the sonic, maybe the diamonds fell out of the ring on the way back from being cleaned? Which might explain why the jeweler seemed to be under the impression that no diamonds fell out of the ring while it was being cleaned. It happens, but there is no excuse for the sales person to be rude about it, she should realize that people have sentimental attachment to their engagement rings and are likely to be upset when a diamond falls out - even if it might seem "normal" to those of us who work with pavé settings to know that it is likely to happen because of the tiny prongs - tiny diamonds require tiny prongs, tiny prongs aren''t that secure... I don''t think it matters that we tell people that it is likely to happen with this type of ring design, it is still a shock when it actually happens.

Thank you everyone for your support and advice - I too am confused as to why she wouldn''t get my diamonds out of the bath, and I really should have insisted on it, but I think I just wanted to get out of there. I knew that I would have to send my ring to NYC to get it fixed - and when faced with conflict, sometimes I just want to run! I hate the confrontation.

Anyways - thanks again...I feel better having you guys to talk to about this!
