aww good thread!

My dad really wants to do a choreographed hip-hop routine for the father-daughter dance...Imagine a gray-haired, 125 lb., 5''4'', middle-aged Chinese man doing a hip-hop dance...makes me nervous but part of me kinda likes it!

Oh my god. PLEASE DO THIS. Seriously. That is pretty much the single GREATEST idea I have ever heard.

+1. You must post a video for us if you do this.

At first I thought he was joking but every time I''ve seen him since the engagement he''s been talking about it. And my sister says that he talks to her about it too! Sounds like he''s excited. Video posted next year for sure!

OMG your dad sounds AMAZING! You should totally do it! I am dying picturing him dancing! Hahaha!

Our first dance was to ''I Don''t Wanna Miss a Thing'' by Aerosmith. It was ''our song'' the whole time we were dating and the lyrics just fit so perfectly. I always dreamed of dancing with DH to that song at our wedding and it was absolutely perfect - it felt like we were the only two people in the room.

Our first dance will be "I Don''t Wanna Miss a Thing" as well! Our first date was to an Aero concert 4 years ago and that was the first song we danced to... and our first "real" kiss! We have since considered it "our song"! His main song to me is "Baby I Love Your Way" by Peter Frampton so we may try to fit that in as well, maybe as our wedding party dance? I''m not sure? Or our "last dance?".... is that a weird thing to do? A last dance? lol
Ahhh I can''t wait!

Father/Daughter...
This may sound weird... but when I was little I LOVED Disney movies.. particularly Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin. When my dad married my (ex) stepmom, we danced to "beauty and the beast" (theme song). It was kinda funny because it was like he was calling himself a "beast" but we used to sing it to each other all of the time when I was a toddler and those are some of my best memories.. but I''m debating between that (simply for sentimental reasons) and some other more "appropriate" Disney song. I''m so torn lol.

jaylex, my father/daughter song is not an "appropriate" father/daughter song but like yours it''s sentimental to us, that''s why i''m okay with it!

Our first dance was to Etta James' At Last. Not terribly original, but we both love the song and it just felt right, ya know?! My dad and I danced to John McDermott's Daughter of Mine. I let my dad pick the song. Apparently my parents were in the car a few years ago when they heard the song for the first time. According to my mom, my dad fell in love with it and told her he wanted us to dance to it at my wedding. I wasn't even engaged at the time. My dad's a big softie - he sang to me during our dance. The tune's not really my style, but the lyrics are beautiful and very fitting (imho):

These are the thoughts of a father
On the wedding day of his daughter
As his mind wanders back to the first time he held her
He looks at her now, the same pride in his eyes
As onto the dance floor they glide
This is the dance of the bride and her father

Dance with me daughter of mine
On this your wedding day
Dance with me daughter of mine
You'll soon be going away
I loved you since you first began
Now you've found a new man
But I love you so, and this you must know
That my love won't falter
So dance with me daughter
Beautiful daughter of mine

We walk down the aisle
On my face there's a smile
But deep in my heart there's a tear
Our friends and relations are here in the church
With smiles on their faces they stare
As we walk t'ward the man who has stolen your heart
And to whom I must give you away
But I wish you love and happiness too
On this your wedding day

Chorus

The dance has begun
We twirl around the floor
But I know you're not my little girl anymore
A lovely young woman has taken her place
And there's happiness written all over her face
But always remember although we must part
You may leave my arms but never my heart

We haven''t decided on a first dance yet but we''re thinking of something like Lifehouse''s "You and Me" or "Inevitable" by an obscure band called Anberlin.

My dad and I are going to dance to Natalie Grant''s "Always Be Your Baby". I''ve always been a daddy''s girl and the lyrics really strike the mark.

You were my first love
Always there for me
You taught me how me to walk and how to dream
God gave me your eyes
But it was you who showed me how to see
Now I can stand on my own
But I know you''ll never let go
I''ll always be your baby
No matter how the years fly by
The way you loved me
Made me who I am in this world
I''m a woman now
Not a little girl
Wherever this life takes me
I''ll always be your baby
You are my hero
And that will never change
You still can dry my tears with just your smile
The one I''ve leaned on
From my first steps
To walking down the aisle
Now there''s another man in my life
But I know by the look in your eyes
I''ll always be your baby
No matter how the years fly by
The way you loved me
Made me who I am in this world
I''m a woman now
Not a little girl
Wherever this life takes me
I''ll always be your baby
Your faith, your love and all that you believe
Have come to be the strongest part of me
And I will always be your baby
No matter how the years fly by
The way you loved me
Made me who I am in this world
I''m a woman now
Not a little girl
Wherever this life takes me
I''ll always be your baby

very good point! Thanks so much!

FI''s mom is very "traditional" (in her way of putting it.. I''d call it more arrogant) when it comes to weddings.. ie "pastels or jewel tones are the ONLY suitable hues for wedding colors! bright colors are tacky!!"... just one example...
But as I''m starting to delve into this whole "wedding thing".. i''m beginning to realize that FI and I need to worry less about what other people think, and more about what we want!
Thanks for the "reminder"

First dance song was "When we dance" by Sting.

Father/daughter dance was "Lullaby" by Billy Joel. It''s the song he wrote for his daughter and makes me cry everytime I hear it!

Good night my angel time to close you eyes
And save these questions for another day
I think I know what you''ve been asking me
I think you know what I''ve been trying to say
I promised I would never leave you
And you should always know
Where ever you may go
No matter where you are
I never will be far away
*Verse 2*
Good night my angel now it''s time to sleep
And still so many things I want to say
Remember all the songs you sang for me
When we went sailing on an emerald bay
And like a boat out on the ocean
I''m rocking you to sleep
The water''s dark and deep
Inside this ancient heart
You''ll always be a part of me
(Musical Bridge)
Do do do do...
*Verse 3*
Goodnight my angel now it''s time to dream
And dream how wondeful your life will be
Someday your child will cry and if you sing this lullaby
Then in your heart there will always be a part of me
Someday we''ll all be gone
But lullabies go on and on
They never die that''s how you and I will be

Grow Old With Me- Mary Chapin Carpenter

Grow old along with me
The best is yet to be
When our time has come
We will be as one
God bless our love
God bless our love
Grow old along with me
Two branches of one tree
Face the setting sun
When the day is done
God bless our love
God bless our love
Spending our lives together
Man and wife together
World without end
World without end
Grow old along with me
Whatever fate decrees
We will see it through
For our love is true
God bless our love
God bless our love

Daddy''s Little Girl by Kippi Brannon for father/daughter dance

Daddy take me with you
I promise I''ll be good
Daddy, it''s next time
And Mama said I could
Sitting in the front seat, riding downtown
For an ice cream cone, I''d wrap him around
My little fingers, tighter than my baby curls
You can make a tear go a long, long way when you''re
Daddy''s little girl

Walking down the isle
My eyes on Mr. Right
My bouquet was shaking
But Daddy held on tight
Taking those last steps, Daddy and me
From the child to the woman I''d be
With a diamond on my finger
And my mama''s string of pearls
He gave me away ''cause I couldn''t stay
Daddy''s little girl

Well, he taught me my bible
From seven to thirteen
Taught me to drive when I was a wild thing
I reached and he prayed when I made some mistakes
That I wouldn''t have made if I''d''ve done it his way

Now he hugs me when he sees me
We talk about the past
He tries to give me money
And I try to give it back
He''s a book of advice
More than I need
The look in his eyes
As he''s saying to me
Let me help you while I can
While I''m still in this world
What will you do when your Daddy''s gone
And you''re Daddy''s little girl

We had "Amazed" by Lonestar as our first dance song, even though it''s terribly cliche. :) "Bless the Broken Road" was a runner up, but Amazed was more wedding-y. It''s not even "our song," but I''d always wanted to have it as my first dance song. And "Chasing Cars" may have been hard to explain to some our guests!

For the father/daughter dance, we did "Father and Daughter" by Paul Simon. My dad really liked it.

DH and I danced to "Thank You" by Led Zeppelin. I wanted "I Will Follow You into the Dark" by Death Cab, but Led Zeppelin is DH''s favorite band and my 2nd favorite band, so it felt more us (even though I think "I Will Follow You" is the most endearing love song of all time--and it is really short).

We did a slide show of our DW pics to "When I''m 64" by the Beatles, "Comes Along A Love" by Kay Starr, and Billie Holliday''s version of "Come Rain or Come Shine". Any of those could be first dance songs, too.

My father passed when I was a child, so no father-daughter dance, but FI danced with his mom to "Teach Your Children" by CSNY. I thought it was fitting. A non-love slow song was hard to find.
