I can't find a 4 carat EC

Body tone of diamonds can be grey, brown and green as well as yellow. I would think grey would be more darkening than warming.

If I were buying a $100K+ diamond, I'd be working with a pro to help me find just the right diamond and to help ensure that I'm getting my money's worth. That's not intended to disparage the PS prosumers at all, but someone who's in the trade would probably have access to stones consumers might not be aware of, and would be able to work with you to help determine which characteristics are most important to you and to the design you have in mind. That said, this discussion is a great way to help you identify some of the parameters to consider when choosing a stone, and to figure out which matter most to you.

Oh, being in Australia definitely changes the strategy!

I still recommend Good Old Gold for any fancy cut stones. They provide light return images, video comparison of stones, and they consistently find good stones when they are hard to find. Being near NYC, it is easy for them to source stones. There just won't be a large supply of well cut 4 ct colorless emerald cuts which is why 1st Dibs is also a good place to look.

After much thought I have decided to see what my diamond broker can find for me. So far I have been 100% happy with the rounds I have bought from him - with the help of the pricescope community of course! I am hoping to have the diamond before the end of the year and can't get away from work till sometime next year so fingers crossed he can find me a EC you all approve of.

The G coloured diamonds are 30 pointers and not certified and I now understand it is their cut I don't like rather than the G colour. That fact has made me think how important the cut of this EC is but I do take on board your advice to not dismiss any diamonds that are not ideal.

I hope to be back soon with an EC I am considering but till then thank you everyone - your support is amazing!

Re: I can't find a 4 carat EC/ASET and cert now attached

Hi everyone,

Please find attached a GIA cert and ASET image for a diamond my jeweller here (Australia) has sourced. I am not sure where he has got the ASET photo from - am thinking he has taken a photo off a website? Anyway I look forward to hearing what you all think.

my eye are failing me :-( ..... so it is hard to see the numbers.. i will try the GIA website so that the report could be easier to follow.

I think you need to get clarification of the ASET that he has provided for you... ie if it is the stone that he actually has. if it is of the actual stone, i think it is a no go.... to my novice knowledge of the ASET, which looks like a computer generated one, the ASET does not look good. The white in the centre of the ASET. This means that there is going to be leakage there.

For me, it would be a pass.

if your jeweler already has it in his hands and you are withing coo- ee of the store... go in to have a look at it.

you may already know this : when you see the stone... rock the stone from right to left and check to see if the light is bouncing off the pavillions. if it doesnt, then that is your answer.

but as the ASET shows, the centre of the stone has leakage which means light isnt gonig to bouce back into your eyes....

Thank you for your feedback gregchang35 and, no, I wasn't aware to rock the stone but now you have mentioned that it of course makes sense.

Is anyone else happy to pass an opinion?

Should I have started a new thread rather than adding the cert/ASET into this one?

you can start a new post with all the information on the stone that you have...

with respect to rocking the stone, i think Diamondseeker (DS) has posted a video of step cuts from good old gold (GOG). it is on the first page but i have linked it again for you. They assess the stones and produce a video for education. In this video, you can see how Jonathan goes through his assessment of the step cut stone- the lighting and how he moves the stone to assess it. You could do the same when you go into the store, if your jeweller has the stone.

Did you get clarification on whether the ASET is of the actual stone?

here is a link on how to read an ASET from Whiteflash.

i feel that with the amount of money that you are spending, it would be worth while getting ppl who are knowledgeable about step cuts to help you. If that is the example of a stone that your jeweller has given, i would probably ask him to find another stone due to the leakage that i see in the middle of the stone. It might take a while cos 4 ct are not that common i dont think. I would really consider contacting someone like jonathan at GOG ( as i have had some dealings with him) and other vendors that ppl have mentioned earlier, to help you out. I am not sure if there is anyone here in AUS that has that kind of knowledge in step cuts.

I think Gary Holloway is in Melbourne, Victoria.

I am not sure that he does step cuts. a quick visit on his website shows more rounds than step cuts.

Good luck with the searching, and of course, post more info on other stones as you get them. :-)

That you describe the difference as "dark" rather than "yellow" makes me think this is quite possibly a case of "apparent colour difference" created by differences in optics (different flavones with different proportions return light differently), as opposed to an actual body colour difference.
I must agree!
