This may be long and hopefully posted to the right spot. I'm along time absorber of information on this site and very much appreciate everyone here who offers not only enthusiasm for the subject matter but also knowledge. This group will get to know quite a bit about me probably from this post. In the past I have only really just commented or liked the occasional post.
DH and I celebrated our 20th wedding Anniversary last September. The goal was to have my dream ring, 2 ct solitaire in a six prong setting for that occasion. It didn't happen. We decided that it would be more responsible to payoff the car loan. Looking back it was a very good decision as during this pandemic, not having that payment made dealing with income loss much easier. Things are starting to get back to his regular pay (he works on commission and piece work), so now we can save. We had filed our taxes early as we do every year and a had a substantial return that we banked, along with not being able to take the trips we planned, we managed to keep to a budget and not even touch the return and the vacation money. So now I can start planning again. I didn't even have the heart to dream about trips or jewelry for a while because I got into a bit of a funk regarding the future. I'm very fortunate that I have a husband who doesn't judge my love of certain things and I try and support him in what he wants (he has a classic car he's rebuilding) but I want to still not spend on things that I won't get a lot of value from.
BUT now! I have over half the budget saved and with things progressing, come March it will be a reality (next tax season), if not a bit sooner. I take a long time to weigh decisions, so I can make sure I'm happy for the longer term. It took me many years to decide on the setting and DH's input made the decision for a RB easier (my first ring was a solitaire set in a simple Edwardian carved setting, 4 prong ..55 RB I I1. white gold) and although he is cool with the upgrade his sentimentality extends to at least having the same shape, and we both love the sparkle. I still have the stone that I got set into a bezel set necklace, last year for waiting on the ring, also in white gold, and I still wear the original wedding band it had been soldered to, from time to time). I have a beautiful 15 point eternity band in platinum that I wear most of time that was for our 15th wedding anniversary.
In addition to the eternity band which lately has been a bit tight, I have two thin pave bands in white gold, which I stack sometimes with a intricate wider white gold band and my original wedding band. So I like white metals. I have earrings in YG and a few rose gold pieces but they are mostly earrings and I still mix and match with my white gold, silver and platinum pieces.
It took me a long time to decide, thanks to the trials and tribulations of many other pricescope members that I want an ACA and the Vatché U113 in platinum. I like the classic nature and the ability to be able to change up the rings with it, as I can do a dainty or substantial look. The budget will allow (with the current CAD to US exchange rate and taxes), an ACA, 2 carats (cut and size being my most important), VS2 or SI1, I will be trusting Whiteflash for eye clean, and I will have to go with an I colour. I was never bothered by the I colour before but it was a smaller diamond but I'm hoping the platinum setting along with the ACA will make it not appear yellow. Judging from this site so many of the ACA's here with an I colour are amazing.
Up until now I was always planning to wear my eternity band with the solitaire but with its size I'm wondering will it be too much? I tried a on a bit over 2 carat stone at Tiffany's (a few times actually) and I think it looks fabulous but it is very over the top and would more of a special occasion look rather than everyday, plus it might be a good way to keep diamond shrinkage from setting in quickly to be able to switch things out. But I'm also concerned with prong rub. So do I make sure I get the solitaire in a slightly bigger size so I can make sure I wear them together (my eternity band is a size 5 and usually I can get it on and off no problem, even in the summer. My diet lately I think has been affecting it being tight as I've been eating poorly (salt) and too much.
And mix it up using the really thin pave bands (1.5 mm each) in white gold with the platinum?
I love sapphires and just discovered the Danielle Jazz bezel in platinum to go with it (and wear that as an every day look, but is it too thin and are the bezels too modern for such a traditional setting on the solitaire? From some of the pics I've seen I like the combo but most of the solitaires have been smaller or stacked with more bands. I could alway stack one of the pave bands between to fill it out?
I like the flexibility of being able to switch things around but now I'm panicking as the eternity band was expensive and its over 5 years old and I don't want to never wear it. Wearing on the opposite hand isn't possible as it won't fit on the other hand.
So any input would be appreciated. I need the food for thought. I can provide pictures if required. I know I could forego the ACA and a local jeweller says a triple rated GIA is just as good, and save some money to get another eternity ring that is a bit smaller and in platinum (I was thinking one with 4 pointers), but some things I think are just worth it and I think the ACA is. It will be a long while before I'll be able to get more jewelry so I want to made sure I'm making some good choices. And I already have the Tiffany Victoria earrings on my wish list.......
