I Am Shallow and Vain. Please Send Dust Anyway.

Okay . . . I admit I''m a little desperate at the moment. I had acne in high school (never scarring), but it cleared up in college and had been nonexistent for the last couple years. About six months ago, it came back with a vengeance. My face is a mess. Like, truly a mess. It got so bad so quickly that my dermatologist put me on Accutane (for those of you who don''t know, it''s a heavy-duty acne medication). I''ve been on the stuff for three months, and my skin still looks awful, and I''m racking up the scars as we speak.

With the wedding drawing near, my skin must get better. I am actually dreading the wedding at this point because of how I look. Don''t worry, I still definitely want to get married--just not with awful skin in front of hundreds of people on a day when I''m supposed to look perfect. If I could, I would postpone the whole thing so my skin would have more time to maybe heal!

I am very aware of the magical properties of PS dust. Pretty, pretty please send some my way for my skin. It sounds so shallow, but I just want to go back to being the fun, pretty, self-confident person I was six months ago. (I''ve been thinking of posting this for a while, but I was worried I would be judged. At this point--judge away! Just send that dust, please!)
 
KB..I really don''t think you sound vain or shallow I think you sound normal. I can''t think of anyone that would not feel the same way (myself included)! Sheesh I am traumatized myself by how chubby I actually am (compared to how I look in my head), tmi I know. Anyway, sending you tons of dust the docs usually know what they''re doing so I think you''re in good hands!

There is nothing wrong with wanting to look your best. Sending loads of dust your way!

And I'm sure your dermatologist is well aware of Retin-A, but I was having some break outs last year, so I got Retin-A (as well as a topical liquid antibiotic) and it cleared up my skin like magic. Granted, I wasn't having major break outs, but it could be worth a try. I used it for literally 2 weeks and my face was blemish-free. Just thought I'd throw that out there in case it helps!

ETA it was Retin-A Micro...I'm assuming that's different from regular Retin-A!
 
Kittybean, I sympathize 100% and am sending tons of dust your way. My skin used to be less than spectacular (though not nearly as bad as you describe) and I know how big of an effect it can have on self-esteem and confidence. I really hope your doctor is able to find something to help you!

Do you think it could be due to stress? I know that I break out during very stressful times and when I went to the Bahamas for 1+ weeks my skin cleared up and was gorgeous. Have you taken a vacation lately? Do you think you could just get away from things and spend time decompressing? I don''t think it''s quite the same to just take time off of work and sit at home ... and I know how expensive vacations are ... but that was the only advice I could think of. Maybe you could go away for 4-5 days to the mountains or something to relax.

i remember at my sisters wedding she had a low cut dress and somehow got a zit right on her boob where the dress would show it off! we spent about an hour trying to cover it up! lol
 
I don''t think you''re shallow or vain at all! I can sympathise. I had barely any acne when I was a teenager and it was non-existent for a long time until a couple of years ago. Then I started breaking out like crazy. I went to different doctors who kept prescribing me acne medication (ointments, pills) but nothing worked. It just looked awful.

This past summer, I went to a new dermatologist who took one look at me and said ''you don''t have acne, it''s rosacea.'' She prescribed some ointments and provided me with a bunch of helpful info (re: avoiding triggers such as certain foods and drinks, weather, etc...) The acne is now pretty much gone.

There are different types of rosacea, the most common being the bright red cheeks but excessive acne is also a version.

I''m sure your doctor is very qualified but if I were you, I''d look into this. Being properly diagnosed changed my life.

Ditto! You are not being shallow or vain, your appearance can have a massive impact on your self confidence. We all want to be confident and happy on special occasions, your wedding is no exception.

I am sure you are aware that stress will make the problem worse, so try to take time to relax and unwind, and try not to stress about your skin too much. I have my fingers crossed that it will clear up in time.
 
I think it is perfectly normal to worry about, so don''t feel the least bit bad about it! I''ll send tons of dust your way though. Hopefully it clears up! I also have to ditto Honey and say that you should try to relax as much as possible. You will probably feel much better by relaxing and it will help your skin out too.
 
I don''t have time to read all the posts (currently busy with something my ps girls would understand and hopefully help with), however, Kitty...I wanted to respond to you.

First, I used to sell an acne medication for a dermatology company. Its perscription and you have definatley heard of it. Hopefully that gives you some indication that I know what I am talking about. I myself started getting acne again this year, however, not as bad as you are describing but enough to make me freak out about it. From what I understand accutane will still take some time to work but I''ve never been on it so I don''t know for sure. One thing that we do know about the etiology of acne is that a by-product of testosterone produces sebum. Iif trapped under the clogged pores bacteria feeds on it. For most of us that means cyclical acne breakouts based on times durring our cycle where testosterone production increases. There is nothing that you can do to prevent that from happening. Accutane should eventually help the symptom but it won''t take care of the hormal influence. It basically treats the symptoms but it doesn''t cause the problem. There isn''t anything on the market that does as of yet.

Why did I just tell you all of that? I have a few suggestions... 1.) See any gyno and get your hormone levels checked. Its annoying but they can do it throughout the cycle. If there is an imbalance there are other things that they can give you to help other than birth control. 2.) Have your derm recommend a good facialist or have them give you some regular glycolic peals.

Two things that are supposed help with hyperpigmitation of the acne scars: Tretinoin (topical Retin A) in conjunction with your accutane, and any hydrating wound healing emultion (biafine) or something recommended by your dermatologist. I hope this info is helpful.

I know this is going to sound stupid...but I hope not. I am using proactive right now. I had some acne in HS (about 17) and it was terrible! I refused to leave the house, or let anyone see me w/o make up. Looking back at pics...that didnt even help either. My mom bought that stuff for me, and I used it, and it cleared right up. I highly recommend getting a good lotion to go with it (if you dont get the set that comes with the tea-tree lotion). It''ll dry the s*** outta your skin if you dont use it.

I use just Olay...I think that''s how you spell it. I have proactive and use that (along with the tea tree lotion sometimes) and then my Olay lotion over it. My acne is almost gone (I say ALMOST because around my peroid...I always break out a little bit)

I''d say try proactive as well as the medication your using. If it doesnt work, your no worse off than you are now, and you can return it for a full refund.

I know this doesn''t help, but stress has been shown to aggravate acne - it''s hard to avoid the vicious cycle of stressing over acne and then breaking out due to stress (therefore creating more stress...and more acne...and..).

Anyhow, if you''re already taking a prescription medication I''d consult a doctor before using anything else, even something over the counter, because you don''t want to risk over-drying your skin or causing other adverse reaction. But definitely, if you feel the medication isn''t working, go back to the doctor -- or even to a different dermatologist if you''re not satisfied.

I don''t think you''re vain. I freaked out when I moved to my new apartment, all of a sudden I started breaking out on my chest (which had never happened to me before!). I was in a total state of panic. It eventually cleared up, and hasn''t returned -- but my first thought was that I didn''t want to be broken out for my wedding.

Aw, KittyBean, you''re not vain or shallow at all. I hope your skin clears up like magic - it''s awful how something like that can affect your self-esteem and make you self-conscious. My skin went nuts since I went off the pill, and I hated every second of it. Dust, dust, dust that the acne goes away! I just wish I could offer more concrete suggestions, but it looks like you''re getting a lot of great advice.
 
Lots of dust your way! Acne is a crappy thing to deal with and it doesn''t make you sound vain at all. I hope the accutane starts working asap and you are back to your beautiful self by the time your wedding day rolls around

Sending more dust too!! I''m 34 and my face started breaking out when I was in 5th grade-the bad cystic under the skin kind. I''ve been on Accutane 3 times. A couple years ago I did some laser treatments-they sting but worked well..the morning after the 1st treatment I barely recognized myself with perfect skin-overnight even!! I''ve tried absolutely everything under the sun, so I feel your pain..and send truckloads of acne-erasing dust!
 
awww I''m so sorry. And you are not vain at all. Everyone wants to look their best on their wedding day. Have you asked your derm about any other treatments? I''ve heard of some kind of light therapy that can help. Maybe do some internet research.

Hang in there! I was on Accutane for about 5 months when I was 15. My acne didn''t clear up at ALL the whole time I was on it. But about a month after I finished the taking Accutane my skin completely cleared up. Hopefully your prescription is scheduled to be finished before your wedding. I also heard a lot of good things about Proactive. Good luck!

Kittybean your so not being shallow or vain at all, I sympathise with you.

I have been lucky in my life never to have acne all over my face however I did have a severe acne patch on the side of my face once that left some scarring my sister fixed it up for me with Nu-Skin products they are on the more expensive side but they are fantastic.

She used Celltrex, the glacial marine mud and face lift to tighten and get rid of all the scars this was years ago when I was in my teens - it all mostly went. If you about a centimetre away from my face you might see a slightly enlarged pore.

I have heard talking zinc works well as well, a friend of mine took zinc to help clear hers up.

It IS the one day where you want to look and feel perfect.

I don''t suffer from acne but I am almost 29 and still get spots regularly. I find it incredibly frustrating because they always flare up right before an occasion of any type, be it a formal do or a night out on the town. Being a large girl too, it shatters my confidence further! I worry that my face will be spotty on my wedding day (no date set yet), so I understand how you feel.

Sending lots of dust your way. If your open to trying other things in addition to whatever your doctor is suggesting I highly recommend this blemish stick. I just wanted to add to the chorus of, "you''re so NOT vain!" I can understand completely where you''re coming from.
I took a round of Accutane when I was in my early 20''s- what I can tell you is that for the first 3 months or so it got WAY worse...but then, suddenly, it started getting better & better. In fact, when I finished my round of accutane (I think I did a 5 month treatment) my skin looked like porcelain for a while.

5 years later, I get the occasional pimple...in fact, I''ve noticed it''s a little more frequent these days but I think it''s because of the stress of teaching full time, going to grad school & planning the wedding.

Accutane DOES work & it WILL clear your skin up. Hang in there- it has to get worse before it gets better but it''s the most heavy-duty stuff on the market & it will do its job.

You are going to be a GORGEOUS bride on your wedding day & guaranteed your groom will think so!

Kittybean, you are so not vain for worrying about this. OF COURSE you want to look your best, most days and on your wedding day especially. I wish I knew the magic cure, but I don''t. Water water water is clearly a must. Till your pee turns clear! It will leave your skin looking hydrated at the very least, and might just help it out a little. As someone who started wearing cover up in her early teens, it took until my 20s to realize that I was much much more hyper aware of my skin than others were. It still is something I''m very sensitive about, and protective of. It has affected my self esteem, but most of my friends are genuinely surprised when I say this out loud, because they hardly ever notice! So don''t loose your own natural glow, over it. Be brave, and put your best face fwd for the day. Your fiance loves you including your skin, not despite it.
 
Accutane... man your poor lips and face! That stuff is POTENT.
