And I can't get a decent photo of it. This is the best I've managed so far:

I'll post more once I finally manage to get the trick to photographing this camera shy gem.

For now you'll have to believe me when I say this stone is the manifestation of all of my dreams and desires. It's a perfect treasure. A holy grail if there ever was one. I have been lucky enough to acquire some beautiful blue sapphires, but this one steals the show from all of them.

This photo is taken in relatively low light, in a curtained room, away from the window. Velvet Blue just leads the eye towards it.

I will be forever grateful to @Dr_Diesel for selecting me to be the custodian of this gem. I know many have mentioned in passing they'd love to buy it whenever it was posted before - I noticed every time, for I jealously wanted it, too. I don't doubt there would've been a queue from here to the moon for it, if it had made an appearance on the market. So I feel extra, particularly lucky right now.

Also,

(sorry not sorry)

Congrats! I love that it’s staying in the PS family and that you are its custodian. Can you tell us the specs? We don’t all have the inventory memorized ha ha like some of you colored stone folks do

Oh my goodness, Avondale, what a beauty!!! All those shades of blue due to the fantastic cutting. You did really well! Congratulations on the adoption! I feel like we should have a shower!

Congratulation!! Im so jealous of the new red spinel and sapphire owners :oops2:

There is currently another sapphire (in a pendant) released that I've lusted after quite intensely. If I wasn't totally, honestly, for real this time done buying blue sapphires (TM), I'd be beelining straight for it. ;)2

Well, of course. To be honest, I totally forgot. This stone has been on the forefront of my mind so much, the mere idea that not everyone knows it kinda failed to come into existence. :lol-2:

It's 1,26ct, 6x4,96x4,34mm, Sri Lanka and deliciously untreated. The lab report says the cut is "octagonal" but this is totally a scissor cut.

Velvet is a wonder. I look forward to her future accoutrements (assuming you set her.)

cant wait to see what you set it into

To be fully honest, the setting is going to be some time away. The wanna-be-Kashmir is currently with the jeweller and the project is ongoing. I wasn't really in the best financial position to spend the money on Velvet Blue but since this is the type of opportunity that presents itself very rarely, I jumped the gun. So, I first have to fill the gap in my savings this purchase left, then I have to save the extra cash for a new ring.

On the bright side, this will give me plenty of time to mull over the design. :D

Finally, I arrive with more photos. Photographing this stone has been surprisingly challenging, I'm used to cameras loving blue gems. Yet, for some reason, the average result I would get would be this:

1746100035414.png

Which is ridiculous.

But I finally figured out the trick to it - stacking background colours. Something about it helps the phone's computing process with colour balancing.

Anyway, here are the results:

And some photos taken with the help of a loupe that show off the faceting better and the fascinating inner world contained within:

Those photos are spectacular! You captured the real reality of that gem so much better than I ever could.

Congratulations Avondale!!!!! It is gorgeous! I remember it catching my eye the first time I saw it in another post.

Now tell me……is this really the last blue :P2

I know you said it might be a while but I can’t wait to see what dress you put her in!
