How to overcome urge to make an impulse buy?

Sometimes I just go with my impulse and purchase when I fall in love with a unique piece that may not be easily bought at a later date. However, if it is something readily available I will sleep on it as others have suggested and after a few weeks/months if I still need (aka want) that piece I will get it. Waiting to buy really does work at satiating your desire for a specific piece and when it doesn't then you have your answer. Time to buy! :cheeky:

I don't overcome the urge...I usually just buy it. And then I regret it and return it, lol. I am always returning stuff, stores hate me!

Aww! Stores don't hate people who buy and return, but they do take it out on their commissioned employees. If you earn commission from a sale as an employee, when your customer returns the item(s) in many cases it counts against that employee's quota for the day/week/month. Your purchases and returns have equal financial impact on the employee, and really the business itself. I'm not trying to single you out, Laila, but you bring up something I used to experience all the time working in retail. The employee's job is of course to help their customer make a purchasing decision they'll be happy with, but sometimes you have customers who really ARE indecisive and you do end up learning to spot those people right away, especially when they are repeat returners. :(sad And it's not only hourly sales associates who depend on commissions as their means to earn a living. It's also the buyers, managers of stores, anyone who is given quotas or sales goals on the way up the chain. Of course that is not the consumer's problem, and if there is a reason other than "I couldn't control myself that day even though I've done this approximately 100 times this year already" then it's no questions asked for the most part.

Sorry. I guess I just needed to let that out. I get it. Believe me, I've seen it all. Including poop and used feminine products in fitting rooms. Guess who got to clean THAT up? This girl!!!

I'm not in retail anymore. It only took me about a decade and a half off and on to reevaluate that career choice. ;)) Yes, I'm slow.

Mon, I never buy and return merchandise from commissioned employees. Does that make it a little better at least? It's really something I'm working on, because I do hate returning stuff and still feel bad about it. Virtually all the stuff I return can be put back on the sales floor and resold again though...jewelry is another story though. I wonder if jewelry stores can resell returned settings, bands etc? Or do they have to melt them down for scrap?

Hi everyone, thanks for sharing all your tips and opinions, either to buy or not buy. I have a bling fund and the love is not what I have to have now. I just get these cravings every now and then. My mom gave me these 3 24k plain bands to wear so it's satisfying my yellow gold craving right now. Maybe that was more it. I'll come back to the love after I get my studs. Prioritizing on a limited budget...

And I changed to bigger gold studs. Sorry I'm thread jacking my own post. Sometimes distracting myself with other bling takes care of the urge. I am just craving yellow gold too. They're huge but fabulous.
